Been a long time coming. Been lurking on the boards for 6 months waiting for the stars to align. They aligned this morning. Cant wait to meet some of the local houston guys--there seems to be quite a few of you :). Been enjoying feeling like a "celebrity" today:car-smiley-003:
06 Viper Red Coupe
13k miles
1 owner
Bone stock minus a short throw of some sort (stock knob)
Car drives extremely well--i've test driven at least 4-5 gen 3s and gen 4s in my search and this was the tightest driving of them all. Aside from the problem i have with the hatch not closing (i made a separate thread to whine about this), the LR turn signal taking on water like a 15th century wooden galleon, the lifters/rockers sounding like a sewing machine, a blown subwoofer (can it even be called that?) zero visibility out the rear, and what i believe to be a light yet audible pinion related whiiir from the rear end at around 65-75mph, everything seems to be as expected. Yes i'm on the RFTs, yes i will be careful. The rears are brand new pilot sport zp's ('12 DOTs), the fronts are oem's from '06 (yikes). Car hooks first from a 4k roll on no problem but the front pushes like a camry if you start to get aggressive on turn in. It definetly needs a new set of rollers up front. A belanger catback and set of 3.55s are also highly desired :)
Apologies for the anemic cell phone photos--i will get proper ones when the car gets a full detail and the weather cooperates.

The quite attractive cougar in this 997 didnt want to tango, but she did compliment the coupe generously at a light :)

Have your belt checked, what I once thought was my lifter was actually my belt.... That "lifter" noise is gone...

Congrats on the Viper!
The front push might go away once you get rid of old tires up front... if you can swing it I would do that ASAP.
Call Jonb at Partsrack.

Yes, congrats. I have had several AMR vipers, but decided to go a little more subtle color - LOL.
I'll be showing my viper and a prowler (both SSG) at the Houston AutoRama this Thanksgiving.
Stop by and intro if you want.
I have an ex that lives on Bayland. I make "service calls" often to your area.
I'd like to see your "before" viper in person. Sounds like you have upgrade/mods planned.

Billy next time you're making a delivery in my area, feel free to swing by to check out the coupe. I'm a bit northwest of where shes at (east of sheppard inside the loop), but I love that area she's in. It's very traditional heights, i lived off of white oak dr for a bit a few years back. And i will definetely come check out the ssg toys at autorama if nothing prevents me from making an appearance.

Looks like 95 out of the 206 were stripe delete cars--so there aren't too many redheads running around! :)

Fired her up last night when the temps were into the 50s and she was idling real low and rough around 450-500rpm. I remember it behaving the same way when i drove it at the dealer--I knew it needed a new IAC valve. I replaced it tonight and sure enough the piston on the old one was frozen.

Also got a new plate cover, zinc plated, hand engraved with enamel filled lettering. Dont know how i feel about it on the car yet, i'll reserve judgement until my custom plate comes in--but the quality of the plate itself is outstanding.

Where did you get the IAC? (Idle Air ...Controller???)
I think my Gen III coupe needs that as well.

If you are not tracking the car , 0-40w is more than fine, and frankly even alot of folks who do track their Snakes run 0-40W -- just a minor suggestion and of course it is usually a bit less at the Auto Parts or Discount Stores.
Try soaking and/or cleaning it first with WD40. If a car hasn't been driven much, they do get sticky and sometime refuse to move. It might not work but it is worth the effort. You wouldn't think throttle plates and IAC or IAV get dirty but they seem too.

That's odd. You are right, not normal. Could have been done for a lot of reasons. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Probably a easy fix if you want to change it back

Congrats on a beautiful car. Almost 32,000 miles on my 2003 now (I've put bout 8000 on her since I've owned her) and still lovin' every minute. I didn't realize that Michelin was again making PS ZPs in our Viper sizes. I run regular PS2s, and when they need replacing in another season or two, will put on the new Super Sports.
When I had an idle issue on cold start a couple winters ago (she would start, then stall, like an old carbureted car) it was just the battery needed replacing. The IAC is VERY voltage dependent.

So late last night i decided to take big red out for a spirited jaunt down the autobahn. Forecast called for rain everyday until Sunday, so i knew it'd be a week before i got a chance to pull her out again. I had no clue where i was headed but i decided to grab my tripod and slr just in case. Get on the loop and a few gear shifts later i'm barreling towards the galleria. I exit and head towards one of the north galleria parking garages--thinking i would try to get on the roof and shoot some pics. I get to the top and realize that a key card access is required to get where i wanted to be, so i turn around and start heading back down the ramp. Right as I'm pulling out i glance over at the Westin, and there, gleaming red, in all her glory, another 3rd gen. As i wonder who's upstairs with their mistress for the night, i can't help but smile at the random coincidence. So i pull around, jump out, and start snapping some pics. This raises quite a stir with not only all of the valet staff--who ran outside quicker than a F1 pit crew--but all the people in the lobby as well. Next thing i know everyone is out with the camera phones and I'm having to ask people politely to get the hell out of the frame:slap:
There was also quite an interesting convo with one of the valet guys who thought that the Vipers were loaners and i was professional photographer--as you can see from my pics, I am far from! Although i don't blame them, I did look like a bum at the present time--was wearing a hoodie and some basketball shorts.
Valet- "I always wanted to be a pro photographer, it's awesome how they let you drive the coolest cars. Are you doing some testing with these 2? Do they let you drive it fast? What magazine is this?"
Me- "...Uhh, It goes pretty good!" (I didnt feel like explaining everything to him)
Finished shooting, made a bunch of noise under the overpass, and headed home:car-smiley-003:

Andy, 1:23 into the first link i ran a c6 z06 twice from a 35, pulled him each time.

Yeah he was stock as far as i know. Also ran a cyber gray one that said he was stock but had disabled torque managements and few other factory bandaids but was still on the stock tune (he says :)), i pulled him as well. I was very surprised to be honest, i would think the c6 z's would have me up top, the trap differential between us stock is quite vast--but anything can happen on the street. I drive mine, dont know if they are rippin em.

Nine, I see, to recall all the car rag tests 10 years ago when the Gen 3s were new, getting high 11s stock on runflats. Two questions:
1. On modern PS2s, or Super Sports, shouldn't a Gen 3 otherwise stock get well into the 11s?
2. Why are the C6 Zs faster up top? Horsepower is the same, and the Viper way out-torques them. I guess the LS7 can rev quicker and higher?
Thanks

C6Z06 weigh about 3150 lbs, and have 7,000 rpm stock. They are in a sweeter powerband, and deadly at 60 mph in 2nd. Throttle response at that speed is better than any NA car I've owned or driven, stock. Viper is closer to 3400 lbs, and has crappy 3.07 gear gearing and weaksauce 6000 rpm. We have to get it all done without rpm.
Yes, Gen 3 is a high-11s car stock, with traction and fair weather. But the Z06 is a low 11s (some have gone 10s stock) car with the same traction and weather. I'd peg them about half a second difference, and 5 mph difference, on the same day, same traction, same driver.

Gen 4 are a bit quicker than the C6Z. Gen 4 are high 120 traps, low 11s typical. From a roll, the Gen 4 will pull a C6Z about 2 cars.

This is what I heard from everyone before hand. I spent all day driving the car around yesterday, and I can say with 100% honesty I can't tell the slightest difference between now and stock. It seems to ride exactly the same. I even tried to specifically go over bumps and dips to gauge a before and after and couldn't place a difference. Maybe the guys that track their car a lot can notice a difference in the chassis loading and unloading; and the spring rate/dampening differences in slip angles and under power on uneven surfaces. As far as I'm concerned, on the street, it seems the same.

Figured i'd update the thread with some progress on 'big red'. Things I've done over the past month, in no particular order. Lets begin;
First off, dropped the car off at KP racing to get the rear end done. I went with the OEM 3.55 Mopar gear set from the 2013 SRT viper. The new ring and pinion is lighter than the earlier generations and is redesigned to be quieter in operation. My god what an amazing difference this swap was. I can't tell which part of the improvements, makes me more happy; the fact that the car is faster, or the fact that the entire drive line feels like its finally operating as a solitary unit. All the gear whine i had at freeway speeds from the rear is completely gone, the diff is whisper quiet, and at low speeds in 1st gear I no longer get clunks and the feeling that there is an inch of slop between the rear, transmission, and motor. The car just feels tighter--and how it should be from the factory. Its also made 5th and 6th gear useable on the freeway at sane people speeds. 6th was really reserved for 80mph+ as around 60mph in 6th the car used to turn 1250rpm with the 3.07s. You could use it, but it generally felt like you were lugging the car unless you were around 80+ and spinning around 1500rpm. Now, 80mph turns 1750rpm, and 6th gear feels usable even down to 55-60mph. Which is great, as it doesn't necessitate a downshift to 5th when traffic slows down from 75 to 60 like it did with the old gear set. 5th gear is now an acceleration gear as well and 1st gear isn't awkward in parking lots. It used to be too tall, so you'd either have to fly around parking lots at 20mph to not lug the motor, or you'd constantly be riding the clutch to keep things smooth. Now, you clutch out in 1st and just let go of the accelerator and the car will pull itself around at idle, no nucking and bucking, for as long as you want. Its awesome in traffic when you don't want to keep getting in and out of the clutch and wishes of torque converter creep flood the imagination. Its now a non issue. As far as speed, its even more of a beast. It was almost impossible for me to complete the 3-4 thermal cycles needed before you can beat on the car. It was worth the wait though... Feels even torquier around town--if that's even possible--and i still can hook up 1st gear, i just have to be a little more mindful with throttle inputs. All in all, my favorite mod to date, hands down:dude3:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/1024x768q90/30/dyon.jpg
Next i tackled the suspension (well, KP did this as well, but i bought the parts lol). Did eibach pro-kit springs on the factory coilovers and additionally did custom lowering caps (imagine thinner spring perches for the coils) in the rear to make it level (the rear sits really really high stock, and with just springs it still leaves a lot of gap). I love the way it looks it now, however, the lowering has made it rather obvious the higher offsets of the factory alcoa wheels leave a lot to be desired. To remedy this, i have custom spacers and adapters coming to make everything flush. I think this will do as much for the look of the car as the lowering. It will give the car a wider, meaner look from all angles. The company making the spacers is Motorsport-tech out of Reno, Nevada. I went with 3/8" up front, and 3/4" in the rear. I will post pics of the spacers installed when they come in. I waited 2 weeks for everything to settle and put around 300 miles on the car (hopefully i didnt ruin the tires too bad). I figured the induced camber wouldn't be be as bad as toe wear and i didnt want to align it and until it settled to its final ride height. Got the alignment done at a local shop called B&B Automotive, whom i will highly recommend from here on out. They were very knowledgeable straightforward gents, and they did an outstanding job getting the car dialed in. My caster was out up front by more than 2 degrees, and my camber and toe needed work front and rear. They also verified the suspension geometry and front/rear sub-frame alignment on a laser rack. They assured me everything was laser straight and that the car has never seen an accident (good news :)). Car really does drive better after a proper alignment. I didnt think i would notice a tenth of a degree here and there but its a night/day difference. Car feels more on center, tracks less over uneven pavement, and generally feels a lot less twitchy.

New belt and idler back on. To remove the tensioner we had to back off a 15mm nut off of the rear of the tensioner body. The access to this nut in the bay was absolutely nill and we couldn't find a way to get it off. All we could get on it was a smaller crescent wrench but it didnt provide enough leverage to break the mating torque. I whimped out and decided to tackle the tensioner another day.

Lastly, some cosmetic touches.
For some reason, the first owner, decided to enable 'day time running lights' offered only on the Canadian spec vipers. This can be done with a ecu flash at the dealer, and basically runs the fog lights as DRLs whenever the vehicle is running and the handbrake is off. This never really bothered me--it did strike me as odd however--but what did bother me was the ugly yellow output of the stock bulbs. I figured if they are going to be on all the time, they may as well look good. So i ordered 5k temp H10 LED fogs from VLEDs.com along with replacement led bulbs for all the interior 192s and the license plate lights. In the future i would like to also do the dash cluster leds, front and rear turn signals, and the rear taillights and reverse lights. All in due time. The interior leds look really really good. It really gives the car a more modern appeal at night. The fogs also look great. They are crisp white output, and match the factory xenons at night. I also replaced the stock foot long shifter with an MGW unit, and threw in a MGW trim ring around the cup holder to spruce the place up ;) Shifter is miles ahead of the stock unit, direct, short, and snicks from gate to gate with ease. Finally, i threw on the aluminum viper sills for a little contrast upon entry. I like the way it all came out.
So the last pics depict;
Interior led conversion
Led fogs
Led license bulbs
MGW 'Gripper shift knob'
MGW Short throw shifter
MGW Cupholder trim ring

Nice writeup. So, did changing the belt stop your squeak, and maybe you wont have to change the idler pulley after all? I guess that nut can be accessed from underneath with the car on a lift. My 03 has an MGW shifter, and it really does make a difference. The gearset change is very tempting, I just don't have the extra coin to do it right now. THanks for posting, you have a gorgeous car.

Thanks for all the kind words! It hasn't gotten cold enough to see if the squeak went away but on a cold start this morning I didn't hear anything. When I had the belt off I spun all the pulleys by hand and discovered they were all silent except the water pump which was silently squeaky. So it may be the water pump needs replacement. I'll see after the car sits for a few days if it's still making noise.
As far the camera, it's just a Nikon D5100 with the kit lens (18-55mm). I use 50mm 1.8 prime sometimes as well.

Made some more progress on 'big red'. Forgot to bring the SLR so only sh*tty cell pics this time.
Took off to Bill's place to wrench. We started off simple, a transmission flush. Every single person you ask on the viper forums will give you a different recommendation when it comes to fluid, so after a chat with a tremec engineer i decided to stick with OEM. If its good enough for the race teams, its good enough for me. Stopped by and picked up some 75W-85 from the local dealer. $25/quart made me :what:

Got the car in the air and the underbody aero panel off. Yes, there is a jack stand under the front hard-point, you can see the yellow mount. We also slid a race ramp under the rear tire for S&Gs. I hate being under any car, it just makes me so paranoid.

Went out to do a thermal cycle on the transmission and grab some food. Couldn't really tell a difference in shifting, still kind of crunchy when its cold and the rpms are low. Shifts like butter when it gets really warmed up or you're beating on it. Guess that's just the nature of the beast. New fluid definitely didn't hurt anything and was probably the first time it was changed. Leaving the neighborhood we ran up on a 458 and i kept trying to entice him to play with us a bit. He goosed it a little here and there (car sounds incredible), but we didn't have room to play until we turned off the road onto the feeder. No clean runs, just him in front of me going WOT a few times. He'd get on it, i'd get on it, no one would go anywhere, and he'd let out. I did start running up on him when we hit it from a lower roll, but who knows what rpm range/gear he was in. On paper he should pull on me, i've seen 458s trap from 125 to the low 130s:eek: in the 1/4 depending on DA. Either way, it was pure sex:thumbup:

Back from lunch, feeling like a fat pos from eating a pound of fajitas, the real work began. Finally got exhaust for the car;
3" Corsa Track catback
3" Midpipes
3" Random-tech HF Cats
Wish i could of got some long-tubes as well, but another 2 grand was not in the cards. For anyone that has never seen a stock gen 3 viper exhaust this is the mess thats under the car. 3" Vband exits to a flex pipe, 2 cats with 2.5" piping on either side, into a 2.5" stock catback and cross-over. Most people assume that the exhaust gasses from the left bank exit on the left side, but in fact they turn right in front of the tips and exit out the opposite side. The majority of the cabin footwell heat is from the 4 cats, and the cross-overs do a nice job of being seat warmers.
http://trexofamerica.com/gallery2/d/7940-2/100_4755.jpg
To remedy this heat issue, ditch the x-overs, lose around 25lbs, and pick up around 25-30hp, its being replaced with this;

The job starts with taking off the side sills on both sides of the car (since the underbody aero tray has already been removed). The sills are held on with numerous phillips headed fasteners and are easy as turning a screwdriver to remove... with the exception of 1 MFer of a bolt. Everyone had warned me that its a bitch and a half to get the last bolt inside the side sills and they weren't wrong. This bolt, located all the way up and inside the side vents as deep as you can go, is all but impossible to get at. You barely have room to fit your hand inside the vent to feel around where it is, and the only tool you can get on it, is an open ended wrench. So as you feel around blind in there with your wrench, hoping for the slightest bit of luck to actually find the head of the nut; When you do manage to grab a hold of it, you get maybe a 1/16th of a turn on it until you have to let go, flip the wrench, and do it over, and over, and over, and over again. It gets real fun when the wrench slips out of your hand and falls into the side sill, or you just cant plain find the head of the bolt. Even better, is when you rotate it the wrong way by accident. It is on of the most frustrating automotive tasks I've ever performed.
http://imageshack.com/a/img543/9172/2m5x.jpg

Finally, after much laboring and cursing, both side sills are off, exposing the stock exhaust.

At this point, since i had purchased the mid-pipes from a gen 4 viper, the catback from a gen 3, and had no real clue whether or not the gen 3/4 mid-pipes were interchangeable (forums gave mixed opinions) i decided to let a local exhaust shop actually install the piping. That way, if any modification/welding was involved, we wouldn't be stuck with a car without exhaust in the garage. We drove the car over to the shop with the side sills missing (and got some interesting looks on the freeway). Everything turned out to be interchangeable indeed, so soon we were back in the garage doing the final fitment.
Corsa and midpipes on;

Aero pan back on;
http://imageshack.com/a/img577/9433/93pe.jpg
And then the other bitch and a half. Getting the tips to line up perfectly with the cutout on the side sills. It drives me nuts to see vipers with tips that are misaligned, or touching the exhaust opening, so i really wanted to make sure everything was in there dead center. You also have to keep in mind that after driving the whole exhaust grows from thermal expansion and the tips move back as much as inch, so they actually have to sit a little more forward in the opening when the car is cold.
It was another back n forth, back n forth, mocking up the side sill, seeing the position of the catback, taking the sill off again, loosening the clamps at the mid pipe, moving the catback, then putting the sill on and checking, over and over again. This was a monumental pain in the ass. Compounded by the fact that we needed to push the catback further into the midpipes by about an inch on both sides and the only way to do this was to hammer it in with a baby copper headed hammer that we had. You only have about 8 inches of room to swing the hammer where the hanger is, so this took FOREVER. Literally about 30 minutes of laying next to the car, beating on the hanger, and trying to get the damn catback to move on both sides.
Finally, everything was lined up best we could get it, and the sills went back on (tightening that vent nut was just as fun as taking it off). I am very impressed by how well the corsa tips conform to the opening, their shape is absolutely perfect.

The car sounds like it looks, insane. Think of a john deere tractor, a swarm of africanized honeybees having sex with a p51 mustang. It fires up with a loud snarl/bark, and then settles into a lopey tractor-esque idle. I love it. Under load it just screams, i really wanted to get a sound clip but until i get an external mic for either of my cameras it just wont do it justice. Now i just have to get a tune to take advantage of the upgrades.

Congratulations on a great build! I have a similar overall mod set up and love it.
I'd recommend getting rid of the runflats, especially with your new-found rear wheel torque. In addition to terrible traction and increased stiffness they also give you about 25 lbs more in rotating mass.

Very nice writeup. I purchased my 03 with the Mopar Race exhaust already installed, so I don't know what it's like to drive one with the stock crosspipes. In addition to less heat, better flow, you lose a bit of weight, and less weight means faster. I hear what you're saying about your runflats, but trust me, when you put PS2s on, it's like a whole different animal, and can make a difference in traction 0-60 and in the quarter.
Oh, and the 458? We have several of them at my C&C, and I've driven with them. Dude, they will pull you and eat your lunch. They are THAT fast, and with their paddle shifting, I was barely out of 1st, and it was like...WTF just happened, LOL!
PS. Is that a 10th Anniversary 1988 RX7 in that garage? My mother had one, and I taught myself to drive a stick in that car. It was a fun, and fast (for it's day) car. Sucked down fuel like a big block though. My Viper gets better mileage!

Yep, it sure is. I've had that car for a long time and just can't part with it. I started a big turbo swap but never finished. It's actually really close but I've been distracted with other projects. I'm planing to run it on e85.

Some more updates;
Took the car to KP Racing earlier in the week to get an SCT handheld and get a custom tune. I had popped a CEL from running around with the hi-flo cats after the exhaust install and wanted that cleared up as well.
Car baselined at 445whp/460wtq, and they finished up at 459whp/482wtq, a gain of 14whp/22wtq. You can see nice torque gains through-out the midrange and the AFR got cleaned up between 2-3.5k, where it was really lean on the stock tune. Apparently there was a mirage of software issues plaguing the SCTs communication with the ECU, and no amount of tech support from SCT could resolve the woes. So the pulls were actually data logged on HP tuners, and the file loaded through the SCT. They also had trouble clearing the P0420 Emissions code, but that was later resolved and cleared with a dummy OBD scanner tool. I asked if the downstream 02s were shut-off through the SCT (so that the code wouldn't reappear) and was assured they were, so i thanked the tuner and went on my way.

Seat of the pants feel after the tune were inconclusive, i really couldn't tell a difference--nor did i really expect to with such minimal gains. So i decided to hit the track the next day to see where the car stood. Proofs in the pudding as they say. It was valentines day so i figured it would be straight up singles night at the track, with minimal attendance. I somehow coerced the gf to forego any romantic plans that night in favor of me turning some passes. She accompanied me and was a champ the whole night--ie. minimal bitching, I was very impressed. I headed off to Royal Purple Raceway straight from the office, and arrived just as the gates opened at 6pm. On the way, the car threw another CEL. Mfer. So i guess maybe the down stream 02s were not turned off as previously thought, and after the necessary drive cycles the emissions code reappeared. I figured i'd come this far, i might as well run the car, and let KP deal with the code issue the following week.
As i expected, attendance was very sparse so i proceeded to tech in and assume pole position in the staging lanes. I let the car cool for about half an hour and tried to mount the go-pro on the inside of the hatch glass without success. Mounted as far as it could go up on the inside of the hatch it was hitting the waterfall behind the seats and I couldnt angle it right. I decided to mount in near the subwoofer, and after many attempts got it to adhere to the plastic in that spot. It promptly fell off at first burnout.

So then the fun begins. I knew on the way to the track by looking at the weather info, that it would be into the low 60s at best--and even this would be deep into the night. This means no ATCO style -2000-3000ft DAs to bring forth the earth scorching times. However, even though i'd be giving up some power on the big end, the temps would at least give the factory run-flats a fighting chance on the short side. Never actually having taken the viper to the strip before, i really didnt know what to expect on the 60' side, and knew it would really be a learning experience from the get-go. I promised myself i wouldn't let my competitive nature get to me and that i wouldnt focus on RT's and the guy next to me. So I drop the run-flats to 25psi on the rear (they would probably be 27-28psi after the light burnout) and proceed around to the starting line.
Here are the track conditions from the night.
Runs 1-3 were between 7:00-8:00pm with conditions improving with each subsequent pass.
72* F
60% humidity
29.94 in HG
Resultant DA = +1266ft
Run 4 was done right at 10:00pm (1hr cool down and waiting for the temps to come down).
64*F
68% humidity
30.05 in HG
Resultant DA = +630ft
Run 1
Pull up and grab the left lane, drive around the water box and back in. I couldn't really see when my rears were actually in the water so i shoot a stare at the gentleman responsible for keeping things wet back there (that's what she said). And motion best i could through a combination of hand gestures and awkward lip movement that he needs to guide me in. He shoots back an enthusiastic smile and thumbs up, and does nothing. I face-palm and proceed without his guidance. Move out of the box and proceed to do a light burnout; dump the clutch and grab the brakes, instant wheelhop. The track is prepped well, and the sticky surface and the runflats start a disagreement that send vibrations through the driveline, and make my skin crawl. I immediately get out of it and roll up to the tree. "Ugh, I hope this doesn't set the precedent for the night", i mutter to myself, and stage up.
2500rpm, pre-load the clutch, 3rd yellow, and i'm off. Starts wheel hopping almost immediately, fack, i let out, just enough to quell the driveline tramp and jump back in it. Rip 2nd, then 3rd, and as I pass the 1000' mark i see the 1/8th mile times come up on the main display. "Man, I haven't been to the strip in a while, they give you 1/8th mile during the run?! Thats neat..."; bang 4th and I'm through the traps. Neat indeed, except that someone forgot to switch the timers from the 1/8th mile junior dragsters that were allowed to run from 6:30-7:00. Just as well, that was horrible launch.
Run 2
Right lane this time, pull up to the guy at the waterbox and ask him to be generous with the H2O, and to guide me in this time. He obliges. I roll out of the box and light em up, she sits there, smooth wheelspin, perfect. I stage, 2500rpm, watch the tree and feather her out. Bites in hard and bogs, damnit, i stay in it, bang em through the traps. Ok, so maybe the runflats aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be.
Run 3
Hot lap again for the 3rd time, i pull up, do another light burnout (only until i see smoke), and stage up. 3,000rpm and I decide to get a little more aggressive on tip-in this time. Tree does its dance, and I'm off. Car jumps off the line and plants me in the seat, great launch. I proceed to shift like i mean it, and am rewarded with satisfying 60' and time. Now i think, the car is hot, and DA is too high, i can do better. I decide to park big red, and let her and the track cool. I grab a brew with the other half and we park ourselves in the stands.
Run 4
I was facing an internal dilemma. The staging lanes were packed up, and the gf's patience was wearing thin, i knew I had one pass left in me and i wanted to make it count. I still hadn't reached an adhesion limit on the launch so i really wanted to push the launch rpm higher. 3200... 3300 maybe? I decided not to chance it and blow my last pass with a ****ty 60', so I settled back at 3000. I line up next to a beautiful silver ls2 gto, who sits next to me in the lanes cammin' and rockin away. I can see he's on a tire so I start to wonder what hes got under the hood. Cam only bolt on? Head/cam? Head/cam/spray? Uh, oh. I do my little burnout and stage up. He takes his time doing a burnout. I hate it when they make me wait. I start concentrating less and less on my launch and more and more on cutting a light and putting in on the goat, and of course, my 60' suffers.
The tree drops and we leave together, i bang 2nd and hes a fender behind me, i grab 3rd and he hasn't missed a step, still on me a few ft back. I rip into 4th and an audible chirp lets me know the stock clutch hasn't missed a beat, but i still cant pull away from him. We blast through the traps maybe a few hundredths apart. Damn good pass, and an awesome race. I throw him a thumbs up out the window as we brake in the overrun. I knew before i got my slip that it was good run, and i wasn't disappointed.
Here are the slips, in order, from 1st pass to last, left to right.

All in all I had an absolute blast at the track. Probably the funnest outing yet. Combination of the car performing well, no incidents, and overall positive attitude of everyone around me towards the viper made the trip memorable. I couldn't turn around without someone wanting to chat me up about the car or take pics. Met a lot of nice people in the staging lanes that night. I know there is another tenth in the launch with some seat time, and more favorable DA's would bring higher traps. Next time.

You'll make right at 500 rwhp corrected after you remove the cats and throw some headers on there.
I'll see what Friday looks like. I still have to install my brake controller on the Tahoe before I can haul with it. I'll try to get to it this week but I may still be a week or two out from getting down there with you guys.

Thought you guys might find this useful. I was trying to see whether a decent calculator existed to extrapolate the 0-60 out of the 1/8th mile data, and it seems most of the calculators i found online were too simplified of a model (they usually assumed constant acceleration, which as we know is not the case). It seems another engineer on the 'vette forums decided to to create a nice little spreadsheet using a 3rd degree polynomial (ie. introduction of variable acceleration) to model the best fit accel curve. If you maintained traction through-out the run, this is pretty damn accurate. Check your 1/8th mile traps against what the sheet estimates--if they are on point, then the confidence level should be high.
Seems i was at 3.4 seconds on my best pass.

Indeed. Lets see if this behavior lasts:D
The morning after the track, I'm laying in bed, early am, my eyes open, and i was like; "My god, there's probably tire gunk on the rockers and inner fenderwell. It must be removed, now." Next minute, the gf is wondering why shes in an empty bed and I'm downstairs crawling around on all fours claying the lower rear fascias, cleaning the inner fenders, and overall detailing the car. I have a sickness.

I slid by by KP Racing today to get another iteration of the SCT file loaded to see if it would solve the emissions code. I didn't make it more than 4 miles from the place before the CEL popped off again. It looks like the engineering team at SCT is going to have a crack at the file, which will take a week or so. Its not really a big deal, the tune is dead on, the catalyst efficiency code is more of a nuisance than anything (but of course i want it fixed).
There were some nice cars at the shop today so i snapped some pics (Bill paced me there in his silver mamba).

So remember when i said i had ordered some custom built spacers and adapters for the snake about a month and a half ago? Well, it has been quite the saga.
The box arrived about a month ago, after a 2 week wait. I immediately set out to put them on--piece of cake i thought. Get the car in the air, all the goods unpacked, and both wheels off on one side so i could mock fit everything before cleaning the surface rust on the hubs.
In the box;
12X - 1/2x20 Chrome ET Lugnuts
2X - Adapter - Hub & Wheel Centric .750" Thick, 6x4.5 71.5 to 6x4.5 71.5
2X - Spacer - Hub & Wheel Centric 3/8" Thick, 6x4.5 71.5 to 71.5

http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff78/alexkorovin01/Forum%20link%20pics/DSC_0015_zps2332196b.jpg
Immediately i realize that 1. They sent me 2 extra front spacers, and 2. I'm missing the nuts to bolt the rear adapters to the oem studs. The latter sucks, and it means i cant get them on tonight, so i decide to just do the fronts. Mount the fronts up, and realize that the 1/2-20 ET nuts, are actually 7/16-20 and wont thread up, furthermore, they only sent 10 nuts. I guess they forgot the vipers are 6 lug (i reminded them during the order process). Someone at the company responsible for filling orders needs to lay off the sauce. I reluctantly put the car back together and fire off an email to the company.
Fast forward a week and a half...
I get another box, with the correct 1/2-20 ET nuts, and the open ended nuts for the rear adapters. Yet again i get the car in the air, and start cleaning and lightly sanding the hub surface--all in anticipation of smooth sailing.

I bolt up the adapter finger tight, and proceed to check fitment with the wheel. No go. The wheel wont sit flush up against the adapter. I pull the wheel off, and take a gander at the back hub surface. Everything seems fine, so i try to fit it again. Again, wont sit flush. So i look closer... and closer, and scratch my head until it hits me. I felt like an idiot for not noticing this earlier, but the since the adapter is not thick enough to envelop the entire oem stud (you can see in the mock up picture about .250" sticks past it into the wheel hub surface), the wheel obviously has to be clearanced for it. I never thought this was a problem as i knew the factory alcoa's have lightening pockets which are plenty deep, equally spaced between the lug holes. I guess i should of opened my eyes a bit more, because what i hadn't noticed, is that the lightening pockets sit on a bolt circle whose diameter is larger than the stud holes. I've illustrated the issue in the pic below;
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff78/alexkorovin01/Forum%20link%20pics/hubsurfacemod_zpscc5324dc.jpg
So, I sit there for a second, having no one but myself to blame for the shortsightedness, and yet again, put the car back together without the spacers and adapters.

Fast forward another 2 weeks...(life happens)
After a chat with a few local viper guys about which machine shop could take care of the wheels, I settled on 'Nicken's Brothers Racing Engines' to perform the task (thanks for the contact Tony W.). I pulled the wheels for a 3rd time and brought them to their shop. David Nickens has to be one of the nicest car guys I've ever met and i was immediately awestruck by the shear amount of NHRA trophies he had displayed as i stepped into his office. I made the mistake of striking up a drag racing related conversation and quickly realized this chap has forgotten more about drag racing than I'll ever learn. He started telling me stories about him and his good friend John Force--ever heard of him? haha--and i sat there slack jawed listening to the tales. I literally could of sat there and picked the mans brain all day, but i unfortunately had to return to the office from my "lunch". We discussed what was needed to be milled off on the wheels (I asked for a 5/8" hole, depth of .750", indicated off the oem thru holes, equally spaced), and i was on my way. He had them ready the next morning, and for a more than reasonable price. I wish all of my impromptu adventures played out so smoothly.
I picked up the wheels and started up on the car yet again; third times a charm right?
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff78/alexkorovin01/Forum%20link%20pics/IMAG0756_zpsa08bea25.jpg
Washed the wheels, and made sure to get out all of the shavings from the freshly milled holes.

Starting with the rears, i sand and clean both hub surfaces (wheel and car), and proceed to bolt up the adapter (finger tight) in a star pattern to ensure proper hubcentric fit.

After the gradually tightening the nuts by hand and centralizing the adapter to the hub surface, i began to torque the nuts (star pattern of course), first to 75-lb ft, and finally to 100-lb ft.

I set the car down and proceed to the fronts. Much easier on the fronts, remove wheel, clean both hub surfaces, slap on the spacer, and re-install wheel. I perform the steps and start putting on the new ET nuts on the oem studs (for those that dont know, 'ET' stands for 'extra turns', and provides extra thread engagement to balance the loss from the spacers). I run up the first, then the second, but the 3rd wont go. I look down at the nut, 7/16-20. Silly me, must of grabbed the old bag with the wrong nuts, so i grab the other one. Pull a nut out, 7/16-20, another, 7/16-20, another, 7/16-20, faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaacccccckkkkk. For the third time, they sent me the wrong ET nuts. But I'm no idiot, when i got the new bag 2 weeks ago, i reached in, and pulled out 2 nuts (at random mind you) to check to make sure they were the right ones. The chances of me pulling out the 2 1/2-20 nuts out of a full bag of 7/16-20s was quite small; i accomplished the feat. At this point i couldn't even get mad, I just laughed at how the whole situation played out. I decided that i had come too far at this point, and decided to install the spacers anyway. I checked the thread engagement with the spacers and oem nuts, and although not ideal, they still offered plenty of engagement length. I tossed 1 correct ET nut on each front, and oem's on the rest. Once again, another email to the company requesting the proper product, for real this time.
Both fronts mounted and torqued;

We started making passes at 7pm when the DA was around -200ft, and as the temperatures dropped, the DA progressed down to around -650ft at the end of the night. I made 3 passes that night, all of which were a disappointment.
1st run (slip with the 1.92 60')
Car wheel hops like crazy in first, i get in and out of it, in both 1st and 2nd gear. Low trap, meh ET, dissapoint.
2nd run (slip with the 1.78 60')
3K rpm, slip it out and it bites down and comes out of the hole like a bat out of hell, this is the launch i've been trying to extract; then, i miss 3rd. I find it and keep going, but the damage to the ET and mph is done. Why, why did i have to botch this up. I rarely, if ever, miss shifts, (humblebrag i know), I missed 2 shifts on 3 passes that night. Completely disappointing. That run, if clean, would of been a deep 11 pass @ 124-125.
3rd run (slip with the 1.88 60')
I thought this was going to be the one, did everything as usual, wheelhop. Then i miss 4th, wtf. Sigh, after that pass i figured it just wasn't my night, so i called it quits.
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff78/alexkorovin01/Forum%20link%20pics/IMAG0787_zps2b62895e.jpg
All in all, was a not so fun track time (I'm very competitive with myself and get pissed off when i dont hit the marks i set in my mind). At least i proved that it is possible to cut 1.7x 60' on the factory run flats. The air was right to get the time and traps i needed, my driving just wasn't there that night. Maybe next time:p0257:

I was extremely pleased with the outcome, Malcolm is a very talented individual, and although I am quite bias, the car looked breath taking!

Thank you for taking the time to write about your car and experiences so thoroughly. It probably take s you a little longer than we might thinkbut it gives us northerners something to do in the cold. I don't want to turn this into a weather thread but it might be the coldest high temp for any Feb. 27th on record here in WI so... yeah.
Also, your car looks like a copperhead in some of these pics.
It takes me hours! But it's all worth it if it helps someone or inspires someone to do something on their vehicle. I know cubican's thread on the other site inspired me to go the spacer/adapter route and i couldn't be happier. I love reading build threads, and have done so for many years while learning many things; It's time to pay it forward!
And greg, how dare you pollute my thread with my #1 choice of colors :D When i was shopping i was looking for a GTS blue stripe delete coupe, stars just didn't align. That car is beautiful!
Ps. The car looks solid red on all of my monitors/laptops, so if its looking orange on your end, time to adjust those color saturation settings on that monitor:very_drunk:

You and I both. There were no blue/stripe deletes for sale when I was buying. Blue/silver was a second option, but there weren't any in my price range. No regrets in the end :)
Yeah, I have a dual monitor setup and have also viewed this thread on multiple computers, still looks slightly orange to me. Even compared to your avatar. Maybe it's the slight desaturation the photographer applied to the pictures working weird with my brain.

To cut a 1.7x 60' on the crap-tastic run flats is good driving. That wheel hop you are experiencing is 100% tire related. I know you lift when it happens, but sometimes the damage is done if you do it too many times. I'd strongly advise getting rid of those tires, especially as much as you enjoy racing. The main issue with them is that they hit their traction limit instantly, which causes most Vipers to spin out aka "Snake Bit".
What mods are next?
I work in that shiny building in the photos. :)

Very good thread, can you tell me where i can get the spacers and adapters , i have H spokes on my car and Love the way the wheels look in yours!!, thank You..
Very thorough write up -- thank you for taking the time to do that! Had to laugh when you checked two nuts out of the bag. Incredible odds of doing that, but you're the lucky guy. ;) But, persistence paid off.
Are the spacers purely a cosmetic modification, or is there some advantage of having the wheels a little further out? Does this change the load on wheel bearings at all?
Your Viper has a really great stance!

Yeah, i need to pony up and get rid of them. I've been apprehensive about it because the rears are brand new. Andy mentioned that he has a set of cups he may part with, how do you think those will fare with my extracurricular activities. I really don't plan on going back to the strip unless i do something else to the car (power wise), i know what it's capable of at this point.
Next mods, I wouldn't really call mods, more like fixes. First, I have to get the A/C fixed. I remember a month ago I noticed the A/C was blowing hot (it used to be ice cold), so i visually checked the system and found a spot of impact damage on the condenser (most likely from a nasty rock). I'm not looking forward to getting bent over at Tomball for diagnostics, a new core, and a re-charge. I've been getting by as we haven't got out of the 70s in a month or two, but i think that gravy train has run its course. Secondly, I need to do something about the audio in the car, its abysmal. The woofer has been blown since day 1, and even faded all the way to the front stage and bass turned to -8 it still rattles (sounds like the surround on the cone has left the building), making it essentially un-listenable. I want to get a replacement box from ntense-autoworks which will contain a sealed and poly-filled shallow mount 8", and replace the front stage and rear fill. Anyone know the impedance on the factory setup? Is it 4 or 8 ohm?
Wish list after the necessities; gen 4 hood, and a used paxton setup with a proper fuel system.
Ps. If you're in that building I'm gonna guess, PM for Shell?

There should be a nice mechanical grip advantage to increasing your track width .75" in the front and 1.5" in the rear, in addition to the cosmetic benefits. As far as the negatives, the only thing I could think of was the fact that you are essentially moving your rotating mass further out from the bearing surface and increasing the bending moment on the wheel bearings. I am sure the increase is fairly minute, but its an increase nonetheless. This increase could be akin to purchasing wheels with a lower offset (as many do). Obviously its not a direct correlation as the calculations are shape specific (differing wheel designs have different mass moments), but i digress. Point is, they are fine, I have seen them used countless times on race tracks for years, with no issues.
As long as you make sure the adapters and spacers are made of a proper material (T6-6061 Aluminum with grade 8 hardware) and they are hub-centric to the wheel and car, the assembly is properly torqued (and the mating surfaces are true and clean), you maintain proper thread engagement length of the stud (either through adapters, or ET nuts) they shouldn't pose any issues.

Been enjoying taking the car out for some leisurely and spirited drives over the past month or so. TX2K14 was fun, although the weather spoiled the weekend events.
On to the updates; Ever since i purchased the vehicle, I had been wanting to give it a proper wheels off detail, correction, and sealant. Although I give my best effort to keep her pristine (car never sees rain) and employ the best washing practices (3 bucket washes, proper drying techniques, etc), there were some things that needed undoing from the previous owner. It was obvious the car was garaged all of its life, however, i doubt the previous owner knew how to really take care of paint. There was some holograming, a few RIDS here and there, swirls on the hatch, etc. All things that most wouldn't notice nor give any credence to, but they always stood out to me whenever I'd get the car out into some harsh light. Everyone else saw it as pristine example, all I could see are the flaws. Sometimes, I honestly wonder what it would be like to be an average human being, and not be consumed by OCD idiosyncrasies.
I had been deferring my detailing plans out of laziness but was sprung into action by two unfortunate occurrences. To start, I picked up a nasty chip on my front fender which drove me nuts. A week later, another--even worse one--on my hood. Once seen, it could not be unseen; I would literally go into the garage, stare it, piss myself off, and pace about the garage. This went on for about a week, until I finally tracked down a local detailer that I felt could be trusted enough to rectify said predicament. Curtis, from Clarity Auto Detailing, an engineer by day, and detailer by night. Sharing a common background and a seemingly overbearing attention to detail, he seemed like the man for the job. We had some conversations about what I wanted out of the finished product, and we settled on a wheels off detail, full correction, interior and engine bay cleaning, and a nano ceramic sealant to finish it all off (C-Quartz Finest). He was also going to build up the chips I had picked up, layer by layer, with some touch up I had procured from the local dealer and seal them with a few coats of C-Quartz.
On to the culprit of this rejuvenation;

I dropped the car off at Clarity at the top of the week, with plans to pick it up on the weekend. They were on time, and their attention to detail far exceeded any expectations I had for this service.
The car started off with a wash and a decontamination (clay).

I cannot express how good the car looks in person. It looks like liquid red glass. The amount of work Curtis and his team put into the car the past week was nothing short excessive, nothing was overlooked, no imperfections left unfettered. I am above and beyond enamored with the outcome and if i told you guys how much i was charged you wouldn't believe me. I felt like I was ripping them off. If you are local, do yourself a favor and give Clarity a phone call.

I also did a tiny "mod" tonight as well. Installed the trim rings for the AC dials from MGW. Their stuff always struck me as a teeny bit overpriced on paper, but its damn fine quality, and well justified of the cost once its in hand.
I think it looks really nice and matches their shifter and cup holder bezel that I installed nicely. I will be doing a full brushed aluminum 3m-dinoc wrap on both center dash pieces, and getting custom suede boots with silver stiching for the e-brake and shifter soon.

I was going to, but now that I'm going to wrap the center stack in brushed aluminum 3m-dinoc i think it will be overkill. Either that or it wont be noticeable against a silver background.

My original visor labels are/have peeled off very easily. Just take your time on a warmer day.
The detail job you got is amazing. I have been wondering what shop can do that for me in the MKE/CHI area. I have a few rock chips and would really appreciate seeing the car look better than brand new again.

Nice E-Type in that first pic. I grew up in a 71 E V12 'Vert, that my mother bought new (I was 8), and was her daily driver for 10 years. She finally sold it just a few years ago. It's what got me hooked on cars in the first place

Weather has been rainy for the past month or so on the weekends so she's been spending a lot of time in the garage, nothing new to really update. However, I spent some time abroad recently and had a lot of time on my hands during some jet lag induced sleepless nights; So I edited some footage I had on the computer of the car..

It was an older 3M film and they over stretched the snot out of it. Yours looks great. Give me a call I want to chat with you about the Cquartz. I plan on getting my new car done once its clear bra'd and I have a chance to cut the clear.

Well, unfortunately this Cinderella story doesn't have a happy ending.
I've kept quiet about the incident until a replacement was in the garage--as i feel like whenever I talk about things that excite me something always inevitably fucks up and I end up with a foot in my mouth.
About a month ago, returning from one of the VOA meets I was puttering along in 6th gear in the right hand lane of a 4 lane highway with heavy traffic. I started to make the lane switch to head into the leftmost lane when a car ahead and a lane over to the left of me decided to go full abs lock and swerve into my direction. Witnesses say there were some crotch rockets weaving up and in between traffic on the dividing lines--however from my vantage I couldn't see anything of the sort (or maybe I just don't remember). I was exhausted from a day at the beach, and just wasn't in the state of mind to dodge cars on the freeway Bad Boys 2 style. I made a quick steering input to the left to avoid him and quickly realized it was going to be downhill battle from there. I think i asked a bit too much angle from the rack, and the car delivered every bit of what i dialed in. Felt the rear unload and go light and I knew that when I started to bring it back in line it was gonna snap out. Sure enough the rear snaps out and I counter-steer and try to add throttle (..but I'm in 6th so it was futile). I fought it back and forth until the ass end hit some of the gravel/rocks/dust in the run off area, which may as well have been ice, and I slid the car sideways across the freeway, off the freeway, across the feeder and down into a ditch. The ditch, like an evil knievel ramp, delivered some flight time over some brush and into the only tree in the area. I came to a stop bewildered, angry, and surprised that I was alive and unscathed.
As you can imagine everyone pulled over to see the show, put in their .02 cents, and get exciting facebook photos. Luckily for me there was a decent human being among them (an RN that was headed to work), who was merging onto the freeway and saw the entire thing unfold. When the police arrived she took it upon herself to tell them exactly what happened, which cleared me from any blame in the police report (and thankfully, the wrath of my insurance company). Oh, and all the other vehicles/motorcycles involved, fled the scene, of course.
This was the last picture i took of her, about an hr before the incident.

So, thats that. I'll start a new thread with the replacement, but I didnt want questions of "what happened to the last one" and the ensuing responses cluttering up that thread.
Be safe out there.

Glad to hear you are OK. From those pics....wow! All that engine in front of the drive is actually pretty protective. And you just made all those mods. I see in your sig you now are in a VVO Gen 4. That's one of my dream colors, looking forward to hearing what you're going to do with it.

Glad to see you're ok after that! We've all watched you put a lot of time, effort, and money into that car and I think I speak for all of us when I say it kills us to see your car in that shape. Happy to see you've got a replacement and I'm excited to see what you've got in store for it. I really enjoyed your build thread as it was almost a journal, if you will, about the car and your days spent with it. I'm hoping you continue this style thread with the new ride as well.

OMG Alex!!! Glad you are OK, but I know that car was a pride and joy for you (and me as I was following some of your build ideas on mine). Glad to hear you have a Gen4 and I know it will be a Fine "Shinning" example.

Hey, the car did its job and kept you in one piece. Don't stress, you walked away and the car can be replaced.
Just to emphasize how hard you hit, if I'm not mistaken, the battery is about 12" inward from where it should be. With most normal cars, you'd probably have pins in your legs right now looking at the front end damage.
Enjoy your new ride.

Thanks for all the kind words, it really means a lot. I got to get out of it unscathed which is more than I can say for some of the other viper mishaps. Onwards and upwards!

It shows how well built these cars are, that it can end up like that, and you walked away unhurt.

Who are you insured through and did they cover your mod costs?

Nationwide. They did not cover modifications (although I will have it underwritten into my next policy).

Just clicked on the link back to this old thread......OMG! I had no idea this had happened, Glad your OK God all that work and time your put into that car, sucks.
But Going forward, your new ride looks great :)
Have to say that is one thing about insurance, people forget to include all the mods they have done on the car and many find themselves not insured because they did not declare the mods to the insurance companies!
Hopefully this thread might prompt some folks to take a close look at their policies.
