    New member, near future owner

Hello Everyone. I am about 6 months away from purchasing my first Viper. Like many people here, I have owner many Vette's, Camaro's and other classic muscle but really have the Viper bug now. Am currently selling my beloved 1983 Hurst/Olds to make it happen, I never thought I would sell the H/O. I guess that's what happens when the Viper fever hits. I checked with my classic car insurance guy and he said the car's are too new. Any insurance suggestions? I am really in love with the Gen III's and are in my price range, any buying tips would be appreciated. It seems like most of the people on the forums are guys, am I going to be the only female Viper owner in the country? LOL I am very excited about my soon to be super car purchase!!!

Have you ever driven a Viper ? Why do they appeal to you ? I know of one lady viper owner in NJ but she's also does ATV's, sleds, motorcycles, waverunners, power boats and dirt bikes.

I had a Grundy policy for my new 2014 so they will insure the newer ones. Turned out to be cheaper to insure it with my daily drivers after packaging with other types of insurance but I still have Grundy for my 98.

If you have no other Viper owners in your area to lean on I would suggest using the Sponsor dealers here who do carry used cars. Be careful on buying a Viper, one needs to know what to look for when it comes to a damaged car beyond body panels. Vipers are very reliable cars and fairly easy to work on.

    welcome

Thanks for the welcome's and the advise. My neighbor had a Viper and although I did not drive it, it really woke me up to what a super car it was. I had a '99 Corvette at the time and there was really no comparison. I also visited a Viper at a local lot but did not drive it, I did sit in it however. It felt right, very good. I guess the reason I am so drawn to the car is excitement, a feeling of energy and adrenaline when I am close to one. It gets my heart racing like young love I found many years ago. I have not been this excited about the prospect of owning a specific car in quite sometime, that's why I am looking and soon buying. I do worry about buying one with hidden issues, that's why I found this forum; to read about others experiences first.

All good reasons... Definitely drive one or at least ride in one because it's nothing like a 99 vette. If you think it feels right for you then reach out in the regional forums here to someone local to the car that you are considering buying so they can check it out. Most folks buy Vipers from a distance since it's unusual that a buyer finds their ideal car locally when they're ready to pull the trigger. If you get this far then look for comparable car sold prices to see if it's priced right then get a private party inspection.

If you post links here on the forum to cars you are considering, everyone is usually more than happy to critique the cars. There are also a number of supporting vendors here on the forum that take good cars in on trade.

I love your enthusiasm Herrsss and love your handle!! I can assure you, I have been looking at countless ads in Autotrader, Etc., and am very excited about my Viper journey. The AZ Viper scene is slow now as it's so hot outside but would love to meet some local members and chat. Dropping off at high school, that's great! LOL

As with any Viper purchase, make sure you have it checked out by a Certified Viper Tech. Good Luck with the search, looking forward to your first pics!

Just to pass the political correctness test, I love all generation Vipers OK, that disclaimer being stated, in an ideal world I would love a Gen IV but I think I have Gen III cash on hand. Both really hit my buttons, the Gen IV improved and with the extra horses, well, what's not to like? I will show the car and not race it so the Gen III will be as much car as I can handle and need.

Welcome to the forum, you will learn a lot here. I sure did. If you don't mind me asking, what budget do you have?

Reason why I ask is because you'd be surprised at what some Gen 4s can be had for so maybe it is in your budget or maybe you're a few K away from it. In that case I would recommend saving a bit more. If you're 10k away from a Gen 4 then just get a Gen 3 and then upgrade later.

You also said you're about 6 months away from buying one, prices will come down a bit in the winter when most of the country is under snow and/or it's cold. You being in Arizona won't have to worry too much about that.

My birthday is in January and I should have about 40k in cash on hand, that's when I will be looking in earnest. There is a thread on the forum about a 2008 with 80k miles for $39. The car looks perfect (and it's black which I love) but the miles are so high. With that many miles, well, stuff is starting to break. I was thinking I could get a Gen III for that money with under 20k miles.

EGood time to buy but Take your time. I took 11 months before buying. Prices tend to be a little less in fall and winter.

Is that black one a convertible? If so that car sold earlier this year (or late last year) for 40k when it had 70 something thousand miles.

40k is really around the borderline to be honest. If I were you, I would save up a bit more and you can definitely find something for 50k. With a bit of luck, you might be able to grab something with 40-50k miles for $45k.

80k miles is a lot but 40-50k is nothing for these cars as far as I'm concerned.

Here is a link to the one I was referring too. It looks great, very well taken care of but pictures can lie.

Offer the owner 40K. You will have the cash and don't want to finance the car is what I would tell him. If it checks out. There is always a "something" when you get a used car like tires etc...So plan on the something in your budget.
