Shell releases premium plus gasoline.

Autocorrect got me on the title. That's SHELL fuel corp. This is not necessarily just a marketing campaign where they change the names to fit a tagline in a commercial, but essentially a new product. Not changing octane (which obviously would only affect certain vehicles anyway) but according to them has more cleaning and restorative properties for your motor and any fuel contacted parts. So at Shell now, you will begin to see 4 pumps. Regular 87, middle 89, premium 91, and premium + 91.

I know we have lots of picky gasoline folks here. Any "nothing but Shell or Chevron in the Viper, never Arco!" people out there? And I'm sure we have some that run any 91 and don't worry about it. But what do you think about this premium plus concept? It doesn't promise performance, just cleaner engine and reduced wear. To me it seems a tough sell without A LOT of proof. Unless you can prove that paying more saves you that much or more down the way, it's not even a gimmick, just old west health tonic for your car.

I try and use big brand fuel when possible.

There is a Sunoco here in town that offers 0% ethanol on every fuel grade. I try and go there when I can.

I typically only use Shell in the Viper, but I generally don't buy their marketing campaigns.

Honestly, I wish I had more insight into the gas industry to see what is BS and what isn't.

I stick whatever the hell is available in my car, unless im running the snot out of it, I will find 93 oct

I saw this locally too, unfortunately still 91 and not 94. Petro can(Canadian version of Sunoco) has a ethanol blended 94 that I run without issue.

Would adding ultra high octane actually do anything besides lighten your wallet? If the car isn't tuned for it, would it really do anything? Adding 93 in my 06 with stock PCM wouldn't do anything, right?

I would be interested to see some independent research on this new fuel and if it really "cleans" anything. As I understand it, most of those additives at the auto parts stores or on TV are useless to even harmful. So, of this product works I could see people wanting this.

Speedway Fuel Station by us has 100 unleaded, been running it for years in cars and bikes, if anything it smells awesome!

Whenever I see this type of advertising from an oil company I always envision a long line of rail cars at the refinery. One by one they pull under a raised platform and a guy in a lab coat walks out with an eye dropper, squeezes the prescribed amount of additives into the rail car full of fuel and waits to do the same for the next one. Really, how do we know what benefits are gained by the "+" at the end of the octane level. I remember years ago when one of the oil companies advertised their "gold" gas, it actually had coloring added. A few years later they were advertising how clear their premium fuel was, anyone remember which one, maybe Arco?

I have run Sunoco 100 octane but on the pump the 110 said leaded.

I haven't heard anything about us changing our blends yet. So it must be a new additive that is getting put in right at the pump station or in the truck hauling the fuel there. I am back to work tomorrow, I can try and find an engineer or a logistics guy that knows anything about it.

I remember the clear gasoline commercials. All gas should be clear. Or close. I actually sent an email to my brother to ask him some questions. He is a chemical engineer for an oil company (has been with a couple of them over the years) and asked him some questions. Some of which I had asked him before but I wanted to get the answers again to be sure I got it right. But basically I asked him about the additives and the differences between brands and such.

I have heard so many gas myths over the years. I was once told that the reason ARCO/AmPm was cheaper was because their tanks pulled from the bottom instead of the top, so the fuel was dirtier. Yes, I know there are a number of things wrong with that statement. But people believe this stuff. I have met people as loyal to one particular gas brand as some people are to coke or Pepsi. But their evidence is mostly anecdotal. For that matter, my dog growing up ate Eukanuba food and lived quite long for his breed (Alaskan malamute) so when I got my German Shepherd 10 yrs ago, I started feeding him Eukanuba. And the vet recently called him about the healthiest shepherd at his age she has seen, but obviously I can't prove it's due to Eukanuba. But when I get another german shepherd, you can guess what I will be feeding him. So I could see why people stick with a fuel brand if they have never had problems. It's proof enough I suppose.

If you modify your car to run on the higher octane, there would be benefit. Ethanol does help with anti-knock but it degrades more readily than straight gasoline.

How many millions of cars go how many millions of miles on the cheapest gas possible? Modern fuel is already so full of detergents that anything extra is largely a waste. Fuel related buildup just isn't an issue worth worrying about.
