I use Mobil1's European Car Formula 0w-40. Very happy with it. The EU formula has additives in it that make it closer to the "old formula" of Mobil1 oil from the 90s.

For what it's worth, Pennzoil Platinum All Synthetic is now FCA's oil of choice. They "claim" it has better characteristics than Mobil 1.

I'd only trust Tom (Tom, F&L GoR) for an educated opinion.

For the record...use NO "blend" oil in any Viper. I THINK that ACR _Matt really meant to type "Mobil 1 0W-40 European Car Formula".

The reality is that modern oils are so close together in their performance that there really is no better or worse. In lab test reports, some oils look better on paper than others, but in actual use you will probably never notice a difference. For limited mileage cars like ours, the weight of the oil will have a greater effect on performance and wear than what brand it is. Personally, I use Mobil 1 in my "new" cars. Not because I think it's better than the others, but because it's the most convenient to get and regularly goes on sale at my local Farm and Fleet(that would be like a Tractor Supply Company for you non-midwesterners).

    Hi guys,

I know that the "newer" oils does not have any zinc coumpound(to help prevent wear)
in it. (mostly because newer car are running roller everything).
I am wondering if running additive or Royal Purple(or any type of "racing oil") would be good in a "not so roller equipped" Viper.
    Your thoughts would be appreciated

That's not my understanding...while they have lowered the amount of ZDDP, it hasn't been totally eliminated. If I'm not mistaken, it is harmful to catalytic converters, hence why they've mandated less of it.

Oh, and your Viper is plenty roller equipped to not need more ZDDP, at least IMO.

Great links, I will take the time and read it.
Just for my personal knowledge (and surely other Viper noob like me), what internal parts are roller on a gen 2??
    Thanks

RP is good, just keep in mind they use valvoline and mobil stock for their base.

The valve lifters are roller and some people put roller rocker arms in also.

I use Amsoil in all my cars. No complaints here, but no scientific proof either

The primary wear item than really needs the ZDDP is flat tappet lifters. It's very important in older cars to keep from grinding the cam flat, it's a complete non-issue with newer cars using roller lifters like ours. And as stated it's not good for catalytic converters. You could seek out ZDDP additive, or buy racing oils that have a higher concentration of it, but the difference in wear would be so minimal that you're just wasting money.

Most oil manufacturers would recommend against additives since it is unknown how the ZDDP additives (or any additives) will stay suspended in the oil.

M1 0W40 and Shell Rotella T6 5W40 are some of the most popular options that have been used for years with great results.

I'm using M1 10w30. is there a big difference between that and the 0w40?

10W30 is an OLD oil. The European formula 0W40 has a much better additive package and withstands high temperatures better than 10W30; thus it's the pretty much go-to oil for Vipers that has been proven for many years both on the street and on the track.
