    What fluids....

I'm gonna change the trans and diff fluids in my GEN IV here soon since I have the belly pan off and I was unsure of what the factory fills are. Is it the same as previous years?

I know I still need the friction modifier for the diff but want sure if the fluid was still the 75w 140

Can't remember what the trans fluid is.

While we are at it....what are the other fluids for the car?

Brake and clutch MOPAR DOT 4? Amounts?

    Coolant? Amount?

    Power Steering? Amount?

    Any help is apprediated

    Thanks!

I am wanting to do this as well. Just bought my car and want to make sure everything is 100% new as I start off with it. I have a gen 3 though, there is probably a difference since all new drivetrain, right?

Pleasure speaking with you as well Steve! Thanks again for all your help.

So here is the list of fluids for future reference should someone be looking for them down the road...

    OIL...Mobil 1 0w 40 (11 quarts)

Coolant...MOPAR 5 Year (2 1 gallon jugs. You will also need two gallons of distilled water)

Power Steering...ATF +4 (you will need 1 quart but will not even come close to using the whole quart)

    Transmission...ATF +4 (4 quarts)

Differential...MOPAR Synthetic gear and axel lubricant 75w 140 (2 quarts but you will use 1 1/2. You will also need the limited slip additive. One bottle/ 4 oz)

    Clutch...MOPAR DOT 4 Brake fluid.

Brakes...MOPAR DOT 4 brake fluid. (3 three pints)

Now this list is the factory fills fpor the GEN IV cars. Some may use different fluids but I figured I would post the OEMs for those that want to see them all in one place.

Gen III will have some differences.

Trans fluid is different from the GEN IV

Believe it's MOPAR Manual Transmission Lubricant 75w 85

    What Bob said
I just did all my fluids too, although I went with Motul 660 for the brake and Mobil 15/50 for the oil.

I'm looking to change the Power Steering, Transmission, Differential and Clutch fluids in my Gen II. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Im pretty much an OEM kind of guy so I use whatever MOPAR recommends. I track my car MAYBE once a year so i dont need anything other then OEM. I want to put a list together of all the GEN II OEM fluids as well.

A list of recommended fluids for all Gen's would be great. I don't have time to track my cars much anymore. Lately I'm lucky to find time to drive them. I still need to change some fluids.

Bob, sorry that I had to convey the fluid info while out on the trail. I apologize for leaving the typing to you. Thanks, Bro !!

In response to GBS (noting that this IS the wrong area), what follows is MY answer to the factory fill on OUR non-tracked, personal Vipers. Others may disagree, particularly for extreme uses or climates:

Motor oil...Mobil 1 10 W-30 (best price is 5 qt. jugs at Wal-Mart)...read the label carefully as there are several different 10W-30's made by Mobil 1 that are sold there. NOTE: As published in Viper Mag...Mobil 1's 0W-40 is FINE for all Vipers...and for warm climates and/or track use, Mobil 1's 15W-50 works very well in hot climates and is probably best for track use. Both of these oils have better levels (higher) of Phosphorus and Zinc...a good thing.

MOPAR Oil Filter ( NOW Viper Specific 1992 thru 2006) 05037836AB.
BE VERY CAREFUL when installing filter to be sure that the gasket stays centered as they tend to "creep" since many are somewhat loose when removed from the box. I inspect it with a strong light and mirror once installed be sure that there are no gaps or wrinkles...both of which can lead to a sudden and massive leak. Also pre-fill filter and put a light film of the fresh oil on the gasket before installing (being SURE that all of the old gasket has been removed from the point of installation).

MOPAR "Power Steering Fluid" 04883077 (MS 5931) DO NOT use the newer ATF+4 also called Power Steering+4 which is for Gen III and Gen IV Vipers. (You may now have to find an alternative to "Power Steering Fluid" ...using the MS numbers on the bottle).

MOPAR "Antifreeze/Coolant 3 Year Formula" 04267020AB (still green).
Some are moving to the newer 5 year formulations which are HOAT (Mopar's) or OAT (like DexCool)...while Herb Helbig recently said he would look into using the 5 year formula (reddish-orange) in older Vipers...current "official" recommendation is still Mopar's 3 year formula (green) though many individuals have gone with 5 year. BOTH of the above MOPAR coolants NEED TO BE MIXED 50/50 with distilled water before use.

MOPAR "Brake & Clutch Fluid DOT 4" 04549625AC. NOTE: all Viper clutch reservoir caps say "DOT 3" (even through the 2010 cars)...DOT 3 fluid HAS NOT BEEN USED as a Viper factory fill for the clutch since 1998 model year...see YOUR Owners Manual.

MOPAR "Synthetic Gear & Axle Lubricant SAE 75W-140" 04874469...for differential.

MOPAR " Limited Slip Additive Friction Modifier" 04318060AB...for differential.
After draining differential, add only one 4 oz. bottle of this FIRST...THEN add the other 41 oz. of the Diff Fluid mentioned above.

MOPAR "Synthetic Manual Transmission Lubricant SAE 75W-85" ( also known as "Castrol Syntorq LT 75W/85"). This is a GL-4...DO NOT use a GL-5 !!!
NOTE...MOPAR ATF+4 is OK to use in ALL gen II Vipers if neutral gear rattle (NGR) is not a concern. That said, I still match the factory fill in our 99 and 01...while using the ATF+4 in the 97 (as a substitute for MOPAR Dexron III, the original 1997 fill).

R134-a for A/C refill. Use only on the low pressure side (protected by the actual coupler from getting the high side)...but tighten (or replace if bubbling) the Schrader Valve first as it is a common source of leaks...along with the "O"rings on the lines at the compressor.

Mopar ''spray white lube lithium grease'' 04318066AB for door hinges. DO THIS AT LEAST ANNUALLY !!!

MOPAR "Multi-Purpose Grease" MS 6560, part number 05083150AA for the 12 grease fittings on suspension. I usually do this every two years or so...when bleeding brake fluid...noting that I did use Mobil 1 synthetic universal grease in the past.

Please note that I took this info from the actual containers of said fluids...the oldest of which was purchased in April 2007...BUT, sometimes labels and/or part numbers get changed over time.

No problem Steve. It was a pleasure to speak with you.

In regardes to the GEN II powersteering fluid...what was the reason for not using the AFT +4? I know my GEN II has the +4 in it.

It was stated in all Gen I, II service manuals that it was not to be used. That said, Redline P/S fluid works well. When I don't know the reason, I default to factory fill info.

Interestingly, 2003 Vipers came with the standard P/S fluid while 2004, 2005, and 2006 Vipers came filled with ATF+4...while ALL 2003 through 2006 service manuals said no ATF. Go figure !!!

    Steve-Indy,

Thanks for taking my call yesterday when I was at the local Dodge dealership getting all the fluids changed in my 2004 Viper. They were at a loss on which fluids to use and I was beginning to panic. It's never a good thing when you see 3 mechanics searching on the computer for what to do next.

Luckily, I recalled seeing this posting and sent you an SOS message. I can't thank you enough for responding so quickly and clarifying what was needed.

    Best regards,

    - Jim

(P.S. Prior to Steve calling back, I had also called Mark Jorgensen with a question on filling the differential fluid. Mark answered his cell phone and instructed the mechanic on what to do. Thanks, Mark!)

That certainly wouldn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling about the tech working on my car, but Steve-Indy and Mark J. are truly class acts.

Jim, thanks for the kind words. As Viper guys , we ALL try to help each other. Sadly, it can be quite difficult to sort through the various resources provided to the dealers if one does not deal with all versions of these cars on a very regular basis. Wife and I are starting our 20th year of Viper ownership and club participation. There are many, many folks who have and do help us regularly. We are proud to se members of such a fine, helpful, and enthusiastic group !!

Useful thread! I'm in the process of collecting all of the fluids for the car since I'm about to replace every single one in the car, with most currently being the stuff that came with the car. Oops.
