Cool Dyno Tested - Gen 5 Venom PCM

I put about 400 miles on the controller, and did a full track weekend on it. Dyno tested it today, picked up 29 rwhp. Here is my article on it:

What?! I thought you were happy with the HPT or are you just trying it out?

yes, thanks for the time and effort. I have been considering swapping my HPTune for the PCM. Just for a self comparison.

Are you running a stock car or have you done other mods? Other than the module

100% stock, other than the Venom controller.

Thanks for the writeup. Looking forward to the Gen IV Mopar ECU update to see how it compares.

It would be interesting to see the Gen 4 and the re-flashed ECU, with 3.55's VS Gen 5 with Arrow ECU.

I think they both have their place. The Arrow controller definitely feels like a more well rounded tune. Car does feel crisper, decel sounds great, and I'm glad it will allow me to run the heads and cam and blower packages.

Great comparison and write-up Tony. Did you do a number of pulls, and how consistent were they?

We did 6 or 7 consecutive pulls to get the oil/coolant temps up to match the previous dyno session. These cars LOVE heat, they tend to produce their best numbers with oil temps above 190F and coolant temps around the same. We kept making pulls with about 1 min idle time between them, and the numbers kept increasing each time by 3-4 rwhp. The very last pull, it finally dropped in power by 0.3 haha. So, we used the next to last pull as our best.

I also monitored IAT temps from the passenger seat. It was hot outside yesterday, around 84F temps ambient. Pulls would start with IAT reading 95-102F, but would drop down to 84F a couple seconds into each pull. The factory airbox is pretty efficient once the engine demands air. This likely did affect my early rpm range by pulling out timing, but I'm sure the top rpm range the IAT's didn't affect anything.

Have you put her on the rollers yet to see the different between the Arrow and HP tune?

First, let me say that i could be biased, being an owner of HP Tuners, but, I am doing my best here to speak as an ethusiast, which I am. I own and raced a Gen 3 viper with a Gen 4 motor swap with variable cam delete, tuned with HP Tuners. My motor was also built by Arrow and is a great piece! Makes lots of power and 100% reliable.

You can get that crisp feel, decel sound, etc.. all with HP Tuners. About a week ago we've added a bunch more parameters to our software. If tuners want to talk about things to change to achieve these various things, a discussion on the HP Tuners forum would be best suited for that.

Also, I do not believe the current arrow controller will run a boosted car, but Arrow definitely has the capability to revise it for boosted cars when they release their supercharger package.

In all fairness though, you can't run a boosted car yet with our software either, but we are actively working on that solution as well.

In addition, the current Arrow controller is obviously a great option for many people, so you really can't go wrong by purchasing one of those units.

Now, here comes the biased part.. but any tuner will know that it's true. If you want the most power/performance out of your tune, you're going to have to go with a custom tune.

I look forward to seeing a writeup for the HP Tuners package for the Gen5 vipers from Tony in the future.

    Keith,

Torrie mentioned that you were looking into stuff related to P061A for the Gen 4/5 calibrations - any ETA on that one? Two weeks?

What do you have to do to go back to the original PCM? Same procedure with the dealer?

    Thanks,

    Andy
