    Rear End Gears

    So I had planned on putting a 3:73 gear in the car, but I've been reading that it puts more stress on the transmission and more heat is produced, and the rear end could whine.

    I am now thinking about a 3:55, but I also don't wanna regret not going for 3:73.

    So for those that have considered and done this, could you please way in on this.

    My thought is if they are the same price, I might as well go for the more performance gear, but don't want to make future issues either.

    stock car, 3.73 probably. That what I had for a while, even with the Roe. Switched to 3.33 now. I have my 3.73 gear here somewhere if interested in it.

    The Gen 2 tranny is very strong for gear changes of all sorts. Consider also installing larger half shafts too as many have broken them especially at the strip. The BIG question for the ratio you want is what type of driving are you planning on doing. Just street stuff, drags, or road course? If road course I recommend staying with stock. I did the 3:45 gears on my old GTS and wished I had not as too many shifts on a longer course making lap times worse. For the strip most go with the much higher ratio.

    3:73 for sure if your staying stock engine and wheel size. If you plan on doing mild changes to either of those cases, you might want to save yourself a few dollars and time and go with the 3:55's. If you planning on going TT or supercharger down the road then I would stay stock gears. Remember wheels size does affect the final ratio so if your planning on running 20" wheels than a 3:73's would probably end up giving you around the 3"50's somewhere. I know there is a chart somewhere that someone here had posted once regarding rim size and gearing results. Maybe they can chime in if they see this thread.

    I plan on 90% street/trips-hot rod power tour and local cruises/few day trips
    10% strip- once/twice a year take it down the track for fun with friends cars


    I also never thought about the tire/wheel size, I do plan on upgrading for sure, I really like the gen 5 wheels in black(sidewinder 2)


    Car has muffler delete, smooth tubes, k&n's, I don't plan on every doing anything motor wise, just drive and enjoy.

    I put 3:55 gears in my 99 RT-10 and noticed that it pulled better in the lower gears. It did allow me to use 6th gear a whole lot more on the road. I can use 6th gear at 65 mph at about 1500 rpm. With the stock 3:08 gears I would rev 2,000 rpm in 5th to go 65 mph, so I get better mileage running in 6th (about 20 to 21 mpg on the open road). When I run on a road course I like the stronger acceleration I get with the 3:55 gears, but I have to shift a bit more often. When I ran the Mojave Magnum standing mile and a half I was still able to pull 175 mph in 5th at 5,700 rpm. By the way, I am running the stock 18 inch rims with Toyo R-888 tires.

    Correct me if I'm wrong. The higher the wheel diameter the higher the top speed? Anyone know?

    I've done this on all my cars and went with 3:55. Seemed the best balance. 3:73 is quicker at speed, but for lower end might cause too many gear changes if you drive often. I had quaife do them all. They build them like a rock and warranty for life - even with racing (literally on their warranty policy). Great people to do business with. They're worth talking to even if you don't buy from them as they are highly knowledgeable.

    I installed 3.55's in my 01 ACR and it was the best decision I ever made. The car pulls so much harder all the way through all the gears, I absolutely love it! Plus it makes 6th gear usable on the freeway.

    Yes. The larger the wheel/tire diameter the higher the theoretical top speed.

    I put in the 3:55 and it was the best mod I did for my '01 RT/10
    I cruise mostly. May take it to the strip once to see what e.t. it will do. Plan on a track day next summer for fun but thats it. Car is stock - smooth tubes, high flow cats, Corsa. I have no intention of modifing the engine.
    But for driving it's perfect. As was mentioned above 6th gear is usable under 80mph. Throttle response is livelier.
    I was going to install 3:73's if I changed the wheels to 18"/19" H-spokes but I decided to stay with the stock rims.

    My opinion, 3.73 on a stock Gen II is too high. Stay with 3.55. 3.73s are better utilized by the Gen I because of their reduced power. After you replace the gears, the bug will have bitten and you will then want to get headers/full exhaust. Then possibly rockers, TBs......... Supercharger....................Twin Turbos...........

    I still have the 3.08's in my GTS but if I was going to change it would be 3.55 not 3.73's.

    as mentioned before, it would all depend on wheel/tire combo diameters. I'm thinking 20" 's with 3.73 nets out to 3.42? and so on.

    3:55 makes a 1999 450HP 'feel' like you added 70HP. With faster slow-down too.

    3:73 makes 450Hp feel like + 96 HP.

    If you TRACK the 3:73 in a 99, put your trans and diff on a "SEVERE" service oil change cycle.

    Best "Goldilocks Just Right" gear is 3:55 For proof I cite the 2013-15 Gen 5 with OEM 3:55 ratio.
