Wow and I thought Straight Pipes were Loud

Just a funny anecdote. Drove the car to have a new exhaust system fabbed up yesterday. The car had just open Belanger headers on it, even had the turnouts off. HOLY CRAP is that thing loud. And there was even another "bonus." It was raining and there was a good bit of water on the road. The headers blowing straight out sideways had an awesome leaf blower action going blowing debris and water all over the cars unlucky enough to get beside me.

I have a couple of herniated disks in my lower back, and hammering those straight pipes on and off for race events is killing me. Also I went catless some time ago and folks I drive with in run groups gripe about the smell.

So what I having done is a new set of 3" straight pipes, and having Random Tech metal cats (Thanks JonB!) fabbed onto my Corsa catbacks. I am putting a V-band connect up front so that I can easily switch those out without all the hours on the floor in the garage. I will post up some pics once the fab is done. Using Rich's Performance Muffler in Wylie. I have used him before and he does quality work at a good price.

Had I known it was going to be so dramatic, I would have. My buddy was backing my truck up when I cranked up the Viper, and he said he thought the truck engine blew up when I stared it because it was so loud inside the truck, with the windows up! LOL And he has literally logged hundreds of miles in the car with straight pipes on it.

I am loving my Belangers, high flows and corsa cat back. No drone at all and sounds great. I get compliments all the time. Sounds like a wild ride even if just a short one.

Sounds exactly like my setup Random Tech metal matrix 200cells/in bullets welded in front of the Corsa. Question though...you realized you MIGHT be losing 5hp running through cats...why go through the major hassle to take off the side sills and cats for events that you probably would gain more from just emptying your glove box?

Do you get any gas smell using those cats, or are they pretty effective?

I'd really like to hear your car in person some time...I'd eventually like to do exhaust, and your setup is exactly what I was considering, but I'm worried it might be a bit too loud. That's a chunk of change to be plunking down on something I might not like...

Exactly what I am doing with the cats and Corsa.

My Cora is also 2.5", the straight pipes are 3". I may do a couple of dyno pulls to see what kind of difference it makes as well between the two systems.

My research shows it to be a bit more in the range of 10 to 20hp. Planning for 190mph and hoping for 195mph+ at Texas Mile this year so every pony counts. For roll racing events this year I want every pony as well. If I did nothing but road track and rally the car, I would not ever touch the exhaust. And the straight pipes are just too loud to leave on for daily driving. Although it is fun to get out with those once and a while too.

I have the side sills done so that it is not a hassle at all. 10 minutes a side on/off. Cut the hole in the fender skirt up front so you can get to that front bolt, and putting the rivet nuts in the bottom, make side sills easy. If I have a "one bolt" system for the exhaust as well, it will be less than a hour job for sure.

Glove box is already empty. We will pull the passenger seat off if we get to racing for tenths.

I call that the "Top Gun F-14 Look" with the spiraling contrail! It also works with fallen leaves and pine needles on forest drives.

I first saw it on my Gen 1 sidepiper, and I love that 'flying low' spiral contrail.

That's a funny story and I agree that would have been funny to get a vid driving around that way. I don't blame you the V10 is crazy loud with the straight pipes. I will only use mine at 1/4 events, and even then not so sure lol. My new mufflered catback sounds so much better.

Oh yeah. Na, nothing there to melt at least not on a 8 mile drive. Probably would not be the best idea to run around a high RPM all day like that though!

A little smell for 10-15 seconds on startup but NOTHING like before...it would peel paint off the walls and make your eyes water catless. Once warm, no smell at all. Sound level catless was honestly loud and crappy at idle...really sounds like an old UPS truck through the Corsa. At high RPM, catless sounds awesome but LOUD. With the metal matrix cats, the idle sound is softened and reduced some to the level of tolerable but healthy IMHO and at WOT sounds almost as good as it did catless, though is slightly quieter and more tolerable. I'm completely happy with the cats and glad I did them. The catless option is cool for about 5 minutes, then gets old.

Oh Yea, I see you hit 125db there at one point in the second Video,
I have stock headers on my Gen II no cats, belanger cat back rear exit exhausts and I get 128db

Almost every track in the UK has a db limit of 97! so full on track days are impossible for me.

How far away was the db meter from the car?
