    PA emissions exemption

    Hello,

Does anyone utilize the emission exemptions in place in PA? I'm looking at a car with full Belanger and would very much like to utilize the system at some point if I went in that direction. Looks like one would need to own the car for a year and do <5k in miles in a year.

I don't know how the system works exactly, but I know on my last inspection they checked the mileage and said that I was exempt that year due to just under 5k miles and put a different sticker on I think. Our county only does the gas cap test for emissions though. I don't know how it works in other counties.

Correct, I am in PA. Under 5000 annually, and you're exempt. However, you still have to pass the FIRST time, and must still pass a visual. This is in counties (most of them) that require the emissions test. In other words, if you buy a car out of state, it must go through emissions and pass, then, every year at inspection time thereafter, you pay for the exempt sticker.

Do you have a source for this? I'm not entirely sure if all of that is true. I was reading a guideline book that did not mention a first year pass or a visual check. Just that you had to own it for a year.

It is a little irritating. We even had problems with our old viper. We didn't know about the exemption then and we still got a hard time.

Yes , I'm a lifelong PA resident, and have had several emissions exempt cars, including my current Viper. When you first register the car, you must have it PA state inspected, and emissions inspected. PA inspection still annually, whether 1 mile driven or 100,000, but emissions exempt THEREAFTER under 5000. If buying NEW from a dealer in state then yes exempt initially as well

If you have no codes then you should be good, at least I hope so since I have a lot more than just headers, lol. It's my understanding they will look for readiness status's for the emission inspections. Not trying to hijack the OPs thread, but if anyone knows of a "good" shop to go to in the Lancaster/Chester county area please PM me.

I use it all the time. As long as you are 5000 miles or less a year it shouldn't be a problem.

It's an OBD2 plug in. As long as systems pass, you're "usually" OK. You do have to pass a visual, but since the cats are hidden, they can't see them. As for headers, again, as long as there are no fails on the OBD, I think most shops will let you go. I would ask around with local car guys a car shows with modded cars. I see ALOT of cars at local shows that shouldn't pass a visual, but somehow, they do...!

Go to D'Ambrosio Dodge in Downingtown. Jeff Palmer is their tech. I have headers (installed by him) that pass no problem, and I do more than 5K miles a year. Jeff has done most of my work (and repaired the exhaust that the first guy put in). PM me if you want more info. ICPREY, I'm too lazy to PM you, buzz me if you want more details. I'm no where near stock in my car.
