    watch your wheels

if you haven't seen this over on the Vette forum check it out. the reason i post it here is a lot of Vette members posted on here that the OP didn't have his alarm set becuase their alarm would sound if the car was jacked up so i tested that theory on my 14 GTS and the alarm did not sound. i jacked it up on all 4 corners in a hurry to simulate a thief and dropped each corner quick and nothing. now i'm contemplating putting the wheel locks back on...

Locking nuts won't help at all. They'll use a sledgehammer and socket and get what they want.

Biggest tip is, don't park it on the street.

Id assume guy was staying over his gf on the regular. Someone saw it and realized when he'd be back to jack the rims.

Just best be happy he didn't have CCB.

I'm still a fan of specialized locking lug nuts. People always say, well you can take those off too. Of course you can, but that's not the point. The point is to slow them down enough and/or to make them make enough noise to make it more difficult to remove the wheels and they move on to an easier target.

Considering we have 6 lug wheels, they're pretty much only good on another Viper.

OMG! Look what some low life has done to this Poor GTSR!

Would not surprise me if this is Corvettes way to get the Jump on the Gen V

I don't why you wouldn't, so not a big deal to throw lock lugs on there. Probably protect against 95% of thieves, the other 5% wouldn't be stopped if the care was in a vault.

This is true, but time is their enemy. Every locking lug on the market can be defeated with time. But, that hammering is also very loud, and attracts unwanted attention. These wheel thieves can clear out a car in less than a minute. If you have locking lugs, they will likely pass on your car and go find an easier target. It would probably take an hour of loud hammering to remove 24 locking lug nuts. I like the Gorilla "The System" kits, it makes every single lug nut a locking nut.

I completely agree. For those interested, this is the link to Viper 1/2x20RH in black chrome 24 locking set:

    http://www.amazon.com/Gorilla-Automo.../dp/B00280CTHW

That would be one dedicated and loud wheel thief to remove 24 locking lugs.

The ONLY wheels I have ever heard of being stolen in 21 years were stored inside of a trailer that was stolen.

The more expensive, but far cooler, option is to order some center-lock Forgelines from me. They won't be able to get these off without the right "locking key"

My guess would be a spanner wrench/breaker bar would take the ring off with little effort.A normal tire thief has probably never even heard of a spanner wrench.

A big pipe wrench would have those big nuts off in under a minute. I worked with my grandfather in plumbing growing up and some of the pipe wrenches he had to work on wells were huge!

I love the center locks. I had them on my GT3RS. They are a pain of you change tires a lot for the track. For instance….the wheel cannot be torqued while on the ground. The Porsche torque was 450 ft/lb. You needed a 5ft breaker bar and someone to sit in the car and hold the brake on!

i live in San diego which boarders Tijuana so there is a lot of organized crime here which affects all neighborhoods especially nice ones. I'm actually not as worried about getting my wheels stolen but more concerned that the alarm doesn't sound when the car is jacked up and let down.

Good luck finding a spanner wrench that can twist off more than 300 ft-lbs. That is how much these get tightened to. It comes with a 2-foot long breaker bar, and even with that it isn't easy to loosen. A spanner wrench with a MacGyver'd breaker bar attached also wouldn't clear the lip/tire of the wheel, and you know those don't work at an angle.

    Tony , LOVE that wheel/tire set-up

Great job ! Have seen the pics before but they never get old

BTW , any of you guys own a dog?

That looks like the pitts of Lime Rock Raceway in CT. Probably stripped between races after a wreck...

I had center locks on my GT3RS. What a royal pain in the ass if you want to track. So many owners converted back to the 5 lug. Look cool? Yes. Practical? No. (I needed a 5 foot breaker bar to allow me to torque to 360lbs!)
