Ford discontinues V8's by 2018

Seems like Ford is getting rid of the V8 engine by 2018. This also includes the Mustang and all trucks. This really stinks. I was a mustang guy for a long time and love the rumble.

What does that mean for us?

Hopefully the other car manufacturers can get them to work under big brother standards. That also includes our HUGE V10. Damn you EPA.

I suspect the timing of the use the $15K coupon by 2017 coincides with the end of an era for us HP freaks. Damn government could mandate no cylinders above 6 for all we know, thus not only killing the American V8 but our beloved Viper. 2017 is 25th Anniversary of Viper and if it is the end, it will go out with a bang 1,000 HP model and a big middle finger to the government. Saving my pennies for an anniversary car for me.

Not happy with where this country is going and the power of this fricken' EPA group has. They have zero interest in growth and jobs.

Ford is driving trends and despite the little guy's wants and wishes, the cylinders will be coming down. Viper will see it's day as a collector car yet.

Looks like it is not jazzing me up for a new vehicle after 2017 from any manufacturer, except maybe Tesla. Good thing I still have a few old girls in my mini collection.

2020 is the last year for V8 and bigger so buy them up now while we can. Hard to believe that the government can dictate this don't they have better things to do than mess with our fun? Hopefully there is a chance for big power even with less cylinders and the HP wars rage on.

It is because their goal is to have NO cylinders! They want all electric so they can control all the speeds of the mass like those electric go carts. It is moving towards a Mad Max kind of world.

Believe me, if I ever get some money again, there are a few more choice rides I will be picking up before then and then to hell with these new cars. I will probably keep this ole 96' RT as the last of the dinosaurs. No worries about electronics and silly things like exploding IED air bags, etc.

This is truly saddening...what gets me worried is that the new generations will have no problem having these types of freedoms taken away.
Sure, there are always going to be car fanatics, but I feel the general public wouldn't put up too much of a fight if this were true.

Who knows what you'll see in the future; fuel tax on miles driven, government black boxes that report back speed, MPG, and "reckless driving"

Do you ever read the comments section on a car article on Yahoo? I see a lot of non-enthusiasts comment saying why do you need that much power? Terrible mileage is bad for the environment, waste of money for transportation, etc.

I always feel like saying, how would you feel if the Government picked on your hobbies?

I loves me a V8 as much(probably more) than the next guy. But for people to say the sky is falling because no more V8's is ludicrous. Personally I welcome the 1000hp hybrids that will be rolling out more and more. It's pretty hard to beat the rumble of a nice V8, but I think a 1000hp factory car, with warranty, and torque on demand, would be a good 2nd place favourite.

They already charge us an extra gas guzzler tax when we buy a new Viper which I think is ridiculous especially considering the current supply of oil on the market. Now big gov is telling us we can't produce anything greater then a V6 and 2020. I'm all for getting more out of smaller block engines but what's to like. Who wants to be pay extra tax and be told what they can't have what they want. I get to work out of my house when I'm not traveling on business. Some weeks I may not even drive any of my cars or use any gas. Why should I have to pay more tax and not be able to purchase a V8, V10, V12 or whatever I want. What happened to land of the free.

I'd be willing to trade 2 cylinders for 2 turbos, any day. I'm glad the industry are moving back towards turbos, instead of superchargers. Lets just hope they make the 6-cylinders as big as possible, none of that Euro crap with sub-3.0L stuff.

People having been saying this BS since the 80's, yet V8s are still here. If you actually knew that the EPA mandates an AVERAGE mpg for a automakers entire fleet, not individual cars. This means that so long as the entire company's product line can average about 25...or 30....or even 50 mpg then it doesn't matter what the individual cars produce. This leaves room for a few big displacement engines amoung many smaller, fuel sipping engines.

Adding turbos and more, smaller engine options are all tactics to improve the AVERAGE fleet MPG rating, we should be thankful for them as they protect our big gas guzzlers.

Any V-variation can be fast and reliable. I don't see why its such a big deal if they kill the V8. Technology has improved so much there really is a replacement for displacement. It's called turbo's and electric power. Companies like Ford and Tesla are ahead of the curve IMO.

I mentioned something along those lines in another post. If Ford makes enough 3 cylinder Fiestas and whatever other fuel-sipping cars they make, I'm sure that is enough to offset a few V8 models.

Aston Martin had V8s and V12 and only that...until they introduced that rebadged Toyota thing. If they can do it I'm sure Ford can. It's most likely about them showcasing the ecoboost in all of their other cars.

Agreed for the most part. But the inevitability of forcing manufacturers to invest R&D dollars into these technologies is going to mean that the gas guzzlers go away entirely, since it makes more sense from a cost standpoint to use the same engine or technology across your entire fleet. If auto makers have to make a small hybrid/turbo engine anyway, they might as well just upscale it to make more power and stuff it in their performance cars.

Funny, an online article citing a show "source" saying that Ford will discontinue V8s in 23 months it breaks the internet. If the CEO of Ford made a PR saying this then I'd pay attention. They have a ton invested in the Coyote and just this new model year released the FPC motor ... for a 18 month run? The debut the GT350R so by the time you can buy it, the motor won't exist. Man people get spun up.

They do a eco Raptor, which they needed, the old Raptor was friggin old, an exo boost F150 is faster than a Raptor, it needed the perf bump, and all aluminum, it's just dragging the Raptor into current tech. The TTV6 on the FGT is more a racing decision than anything else, they won't make enough to have a microscopic impact on CAFE.

They show 2 vehicles with TTV6, both with good reasons for it, and 2 others with V8s and the report is no more V8s, lol, I guess if the article didn't state that then we'd not be talking about it.

It's funny to see people already posting they're not buying anymore Fords due to this "article", man, are peeps that sheep like that they just read something and jump on it ... next thing you know people will think a Hellcat beats a Gen5, oh, wait ...
