It sure would be nice if we can keep this forum void from negative comments like this...which thankfully for the most part it is.This is place for Viper owners to come and share information of both current things happening in the Viper world as well as what has happened in the past. I have been here living the history of Viper...many of my close friends are the ones who created and built this car...like it or not the Viper is a road racing inspired car. They have roll cages, wings, splitters, big brakes and many other things that work on the race track. I was heavily involved in the early club racing of Vipers...these parts were used at the track and worked....they are not just for looks...and I sold hundreds of them for both Racing and Street use. Please look back on history and appreciate it for what it is. Alot of this was many years ago now...styles and technology change...but...it happened and that can not be changed by some current Viper owners saying it was ugly or stupid. I think the current custodians of these cars should feel obligated to respect and understand the history of the car and why it was created and produced the way it was. I also tend to think the current era of owners will determine the fate of how these cars and the original owner demographic will be remembered...will they continue to be tastefully accessorized to keep the classic lines of the car on par with current sports car trends? will they only be restored to factory original?...or will they be mechanically modified to make them into Street racing killers and then be left for dead when a newer, faster and more cheaply modified platform comes along? I am proud of the part I have played so far. Obviously not everybody likes what I have done and that is okay with me...I tend to design and build what I like to see at the time as well as engineer parts that I think will make a car better and safer...I hoped that if others liked what I was doing they would support me and my business. Oh and speaking of that...Thank-you to all that have supported me and my business for the last 25 years and allowed Autoform to exist exclusively restoring, customizing and building aftermarket parts for Vipers...I guess I do a few things right!
I am probably up there with the hardest core, lifetime Viper guys that exist...but, I still respect and do what I can to help others turn their cars into what makes them happy...because in the end...I think that is the best return on investment.

Want to go back in time? I have an Autoform top and its serial number is "Lutz". Had to be one of your first.

Cool...Bob ordered that top from.me at the VOI in Orlando. He filled out the purchase order himself with his own pen...then wrote me a personal check. He sent his personal security guy out to Holland with the # 2 Viper (I think Eaton got #1) for factory installation...he had great stories of Bob...his driving of cars and his Mig fighter. I later was at Bob's house for an event with the Fangio Chevy I restored for David E Davis from Automobile Mag. Bob took me out to his garage to show me that top and how he had made a stand from one of his bicycle stands to hold it on his wall when it wasn't on his Viper. A couple years later I was at GM Eyes on Design....when this big hand grabbed me by the neck...I looked up and this guy took a big ole cigar out of his mouth and said...hey young man...I still use that top on my Viper and love it!...I have a ton of respect for that man....thanks for bringing me back to that memory...take care of.that top...that is a special one to me!

Neat. I bought Bob's 0002 in 09. Pretty sure Lee I. has 0001. In fact there was recently a story about it in one of the mags. Plus Bob told me that.Recall this was back before Lee got pissed at Bob and picked Eaton as his successor . Jon B can tell you a story about 0001 and one of Lee's relatives.

I still keep in touch with Bob and hope to see him in Ann Arbor soon-- amazing guy.

I don't understand why the Gen II forums seem to attract so many haters lately. The car definitly provokes a reaction from people be it positive or negative.

That's a gorgeous tribute car that will bring more money than some GenV's trading hands right now.

Drummer....how many miles are on the Lutz #002 ?

  7. #57
drummer, did you buy it? was thinking that would go nice in your collection. and I think it was priced well. normally when those cars come up with mileage like that., they are in the 100-teens/twenties. not sure if they actually trade for that. but anything in the 80's-90k in my opinion is a very safe play on a car like that. little to no downside.

Hey this past fall, I was at Dove Valley here in Denver, CO where the Broncos practice and saw a good ole red 1992 Viper in the parking lot. Yep John Elway still drives his original owner 1992 Viper (bought in 1992). He apparently brings it out every year during that time frame. If a plain ole 1992 Viper is good enough for John Elway after all these years, my 96' RT/10 is good enough for me too.

I still think the 1992s are going to be key investments down the road and despite some comments here, these 1998 GT2s are going to be very collectable as well. The 1992s are ones we will ALL be kicking ourselves on not picking up (except DrummerViper, great buy!!!)

Wish I had money and space for both as I would be picking up good examples now. $85k seems to be the right number today for a 1998 GT2 in great condition with all the giblets.

HHHHMMMMM....let me see now. Didn't sell at 89k. Actually got bid up to 80K. What do I do now? I know I'll relist it with a BIN of 125K. Makes sense to me.

Well he did end the first auction before the end, so, we don't know what the high bid would have been. I don't "get" his marketing technique, unless it is just cheaper to do a Buy it Now price auction with a Make Offer option. Who knows. From looking at the prices that he has asked for other collector cars that he has had for sale, I would guess that he is not a novice at the game.

Im not as huge fan of selling on Ebay, never completed an actual Ebay transaction for a car, but did give me a lead for a guy who eventually bought one of my cars in person. it gets exposure but most of the people are just window shoppers..Plus the fees they charge are absurd. They charge me $200 for the top I sold, plus paypal hit me for a fee also.

He's done this for other cars which he has tried to sell. The last one was his Diablo Roadster. It wasn't selling over time so he kept raising the price and playing games. Posting long-winded justifications as to why the price should be higher. I believe it ended up on consignment or sold and listed with a dealer for his original asking price. Some people just like to try and drive the market.

Car seems nice. There was one that sold last year with like 20 miles on it for around $85K. If it includes everything and all documentation, no paint work, etc., etc., etc., I would say work backwards from that number. Certainly not anywhere near $125K....yet.

Supply and demand.....sets the price, probably the most collectible of all Vipers...

All the 98 GTSR had a new instant camera that came with the car. At every station during the build, a CAAP worker would take a picture of whatever was being done at that station. The camera was then put in the car for the new owner to have developed. Basically a photographic record of your (the new owner) car during the build. I don't remember all of the extra's, but I believe some signed posters from ORECA drivers and team were also included. I know there's more, but I can't remember all of it. Best source would be Bernie Katz, or I bet JonB knows.

What would be the value of GT2 with a rebuilt title?

  21. #71
A clean title should be worth $80K,so if you factor in salvage title diminishing the value 25% +, my guess - $50K, maybe more if really, really nice. All collectability is basically gone.

  22. #72
I guess it depends what the damage was...? Is all documentation still present?

Any more details on this particular car? For reference, one sold with 16K mils less than a year ago for $64K and that was a clean car with clean title. I would think that a salvage title R would be worth significantly less.

If you want a good opinion as to value, details on the specific car would be very helpful.

    It's a 99 replica from a shady guy. So maybe a 20-25K car?

  25. #75
The Gen V version of this car is a special edition ACR-E. Woah. I've held on to my 15k srt coupon for 3 years now and I'm glad I waited.
