I want to replace the leather shift knob with a nice chrome shift knob. What is the easiest way to remove the old one. Thanks.

Push the leather boot down...unscrew. There are wrench flats on the knob. If memory serves, there's a jam nut too.
Thanks Matt, Sounds pretty straight forward. Just didn't want to tear up the original one.
Don't think you can remove the knob itself,I have tried and you have to cut all the stitching...the best way is to remove complete shifter shaft like Matt says and buy an extension (short extension shown in pic)...A few different places sell them. The viper has 1/2"x20 threads and buy you a knob you like and screw it on..the other pic is a Hurst knob which comes with different thread inserts including 1/2"x20 that I put in mine..you can also get it in chrome....Here is a link to one place that sells the extensions. Depends on which knob you get to length. http://ipsco.org/Viper.htm

James340 is also correct to clarify...the leather knob itself doesn't remove...it's integral with the shaft. The shaft has the flats, etc...under the shift boot.
