Sometimes, it depends how good the seal is on those rear cabin pressure release flaps, AND weather you have a window open, sometimes the gasses can swirl around at the back of the car, depending on wind, it can sometimes make your eyes slightly sting.

This was one of the reasons I changed the rubber fabric material on my rear vents, (we talked about that on the other thread)

I ran my 98 with no cats. It was awesome. Very cool to the touch. Only place I noticed the smell was if I started it in the garage but other than that I never smelled a thing. I took the cats out of my 05 as well and it didnt bother me. My 2010 has the Bellanger high flows in with no mufflers and its LOUD at WOT but no smell at all from this one. With the exhaust going out the back on yours I would rip them out if you can.

I am starting to think that the smell comes when the flap vents are not working properly, we shall see if mine are...

I think some are just more sensitive to the smell than others. Every car without cats has an increased fuel smell regardless of exhaust exit location. Mustangs, Camaros, Vipers... it's worst when driving with the windows down. My GN was the least offender likely due to the turbo. You actually don't notice it much while driving... it's once you get to where you're going and away from the car before you notice the smell on your clothes.

Some mind it and some don't. It's like debating whether an interior is black or charcoal

Well, we have had cars with no cats and never smelled a thing so this is new to me...

Cats work by exhaust dwell (heat).

Cats = heat, especially and most specifically when you are running rich.

No cat = pipe heat only and the additional heat of potential pipe junction turbulence.

    Having said that, if:

    1. You are not running headers
    2. Have a pretty much stock rig all the way up to a 10lb supercharger (or as per.)
    3. Don't make a habit of standing still in traffic for a l-o-n-g time.
    4. Have a well tuned Viper
    5. Have a well tuned Viper

Leave your stock cats alone, as all you get is a somewhat cooler sill in exchange for lots of noise, gas smell, a car that is an honest to God moving felony. In the worst case, you can wrap the cats (paying attention to 6:00 pathway dump.) Did I mention tune?

I have the M&M headers with Belanger hi-flows and a 3" Borla single mufller behind the cats. Going to get the T&D RR's that i have installed and dump the cats at the same time and get the tune hopefully.

The car will stink and you will smell it. Your not going to gain more than a couple ponies, seriously. If your car isn't built (big cam and heads), it's going to sound like crap. Just run a high quality metal matrix hi flow cat. The sills will be about 50% cooler, the car will definitely be louder and it won't stink. I've done every possible combo on my car from the time it was bone stock to built N/A. Every combo has been on the dyno, so I speak in all honesty.

I just realized you already have headers and hi flows with Borla's. Say hello to drone. One things for sure, it will be obnoxious, like a UPS truck.

I bought non-foulers because my car is catless. I never got around to installing them because I've yet to have the check engine light come on. Some cars seem to need them, some cars don't.

a UPS truck with a Hole in the Muffler! at least that's what one of my Buddies sounded like to me but hopefully yours won't! You have a few Mods that he didn't so the sound may be a lil' different, Maybe Not! GL!

I too have looked at this, but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I just have some issues with this, but haven't driving in a Gen 2 other than mine (ever) so I can't comment from experience. I know the CEL is an easy fix so I am not worried there.

I had a 93 stang 5.0 with no cats and it was miserable to drive with the smell. It would make people's eyes water if they were driving behind me. My guess is a 8.0 vs 5.0 would only make the stench worse.

Also, I notice there is the bend from the manifolds and then directly when the exhaust goes straight at the side sill is the cat. What do people get muffler shops to do in this case? A small peice of exhaust to go over the manifold, and then flared into a 3 inch pipe to then attach to the exhaust? Pictures here would do me wonders. \

Do people clamp or weld the cat delete to the manifold? A clamp would be easy if the traffic police give us a "fix it or ticket" to change it, but I don't wan an obnoxious exhaust leak

As long as it doesn't get in my cockpit then I don't care lol. We have had other performance cars with no cats and didn't smell anything which I guess every car is different?

As far as rear O2's go, either install foolers or install bung plugs and zip-tie them up out of the way. PCM thinks cats are working great LOL

Do you need a set of cat delete pipes?

Note: I believe a law has now been passed making the selling of these items illegal? I would ask around to see if anyone has them

Soooo, in a state (like Cali, or Ontario) that does Etest via OBD port ensuring there are no CELs hard or soft, will these foolers/sims not still show a CEL of some form?

How does your car pass etest in Ontario?

Problem is it did get in the cockpit, but obviously not as bad as those behind me. I just didn't care for the sulphur smell.

Sybil, send me your hi flo cats for a poor man's fee

When I had a GenII I removed the cats.
Less heat inside, min. smell, loved the sound! $50

My cat deletes are clamped. It's just a straight piece of pipe, it doesn't need to be anything fancy. They were actually disconnected when I got the car so the exhaust was just dumping into the side sill. Back in place and clamped good and tight, they don't leak. If you do by chance have problems with them leaking(which is unlikely), you can put some high temp silicone on the pipes before you slide them together. Here's how mine looked before I reconnected everything:

I've never noticed any exhaust smell in the car either, though I'm used to driving older catless cars so I might be immune to it.

Thanks for the info. I don't know if I am going crazy but I think my car looks a little bit different there. My cat ends and then the bend immediately starts. Meaning if I cut the cat off, I don't think there would be enough room to put a straight piece of pipe before the bend. I might be on crack, but I am sure I have looked a few times. Plus the midpipe right after the manifolds is not a 3 inch diameter like the Magnaflow exhaust I have. Like I said I don't think I have the same set-up as you considering you have one straight piece of pipe there and mine wouldn't be close to working with that.

This is what I had done with stock exhaust before I had the headers installed. Went with the band clamps on there now with the headers but I didn't get any pics.

When you cut the cat off make the cut right next to the cat. The one above was cut wayyyy to short....
