Thread: Cat removal?

  1. #1

    Cat removal?

Yes, been beat to death but my question is how much heat on the side sill will be reduced by removing my hi-flows? It's about 60% less I would say with the removal of the restrictive torpedo stockers an replaced with hi-flows but I had my sills repainted and don't like the heat on them. I don't think the water based paint of today is as durable but that's another issue.

So if I remove these and replace with a straight pipe will it cut down a little or a lot more on the heat radiating off as compared to the hi-flows?

I have no cats no nothing in my side sills and never had any issues on my 96 GTS with heat. Warm feel at best. Sounds ten times belter with them off that's for sure.

Just the cats removed on a stock exhaust?

I currently have Belanger Rear exit cat back exhaust system and have removed the cats, massive difference in temps at least 50 to 60% lower

But I have noticed more exhaust smell, so that is something to be aware of

Here's a couple of pics of the current set up

Okay, Fatboy, what's up with the French flag? Isn't that a capital offense in the UK?

Sybil, I had high flows on my Gen 2 and they were much cooler than the stock cats. I could comfortably put my hand on the paint right where the cats were and they felt warm, but not so much where it burned. Something else you can do is vent the front of the sills to let some air through.

Yeah it has vents, I might just be a little picky on this.

no cats keeps the sills cool. hardly any heat
THE IGNORE FEATURE WORKS, TRY IT...

I purchased the Cat delete pipes, but dont like the idea of cutting my stock cats off the car. I wish someone made a whole header to exhaust pipe that replaces the stock piece with the cat in it. i might take it to a muffler shop and see if they could do it.

BTW Fat boy, interesting pictures in your Flickr album... Red Rocket Red rocket!!!

The difference in heat between catless and hi-flow is small, especially with vented sills. Not worth the additional resonance and exhaust smell IMHO. Hence, the reason I'm putting cats back in for the second time!

Removing the cats was the best thing I ever did with the car. Tremendous reduction in heat, no more burnt sills and great sound. I put the spark plug non foulers on to suppress the CEL. The smell is only bad with the windows partially open at certain speeds. Windows fully up or down and it's not too bad.

I have heard of these but not sure how they work. Do they screw in the rear o2 sensor hole and then the o2 sensor screws into that?

Same reason I did it....I've had catless cars and the smell gets really old.

This is from a Mitsubishi Evolution forum, but it'll give you an idea how they work....

ER....French Racing Team ORECA, my car is a rendition of the 92 ORECA ALMS (American Le Mans Series) Viper from 2000

The French are rather fond of that Flag and i'm sure its saved me a couple of times from getting speeding tickets when traveling to Le mans to watch the racing

Forgot to mention that with everything gone in the side sills the car is a little louder @ 128db and sometimes friends have spotted the odd flash of orange flame popping out the rear. The Horror!

Well that will be easy, is there only one size fouler? If not what size for the viper? Also, what is the best way to remove the rear o2 sensor? They seem to be a bugger to get out!

Ahh, Fatboy, I didn't recall the French flag on that car back in the day! That's the first time I have seen a photo of your car...well-done Sir! Nice detail.

I believe there are two different lengths you may find for the 18mm thread size, but either will probably work....the shorter ones will give you more room to work with if clearance is an issue. Also, I'm not positive if the Viper is 18mm or 15mm thread size. Maybe someone else can answer up. It seems like every time I had to remove one from other cars I've used a 22mm wrench and a rubber mallet to break it loose with. Be sure to use anti-seize on all the threads when you put it back to make it easier for the next time it comes apart.

I ran catless for 6 yrs, zero heat. installed hi-flows 2 yrs ago and was surprised how much difference (hotter) sills were even with hi-flows.
As far as rear O2's go, either install foolers or install bung plugs and zip-tie them up out of the way. PCM thinks cats are working great LOL

Do you need a set of cat delete pipes?

Here is the part number NAPA #730-2443. I think I used two on each side and drilled out the first one so the sensor fit. No pics of mine but here is a general image search on lots of cars.

I left my 02s at the rear in place, I did not try to turn them. Instead I run 02 sims, you unplug the 02 electrical connector then connect up the 02 sims which is some sort of electrical wizardry that stops the car throwing a fault light every 60 miles or so

Note: I believe a law has now been passed making the selling of these items illegal? I would ask around to see if anyone has them

Does the smell enter in the vent flaps in the rear quarter? I don't see how it comes in on a rear exit exhaust.

Possibly, I have M&M headers with a 3" elbow that slips into the cat I guess.

I used Spark Plug non-foulers. Simple, easy and cheap. No issues with codes and non-Ghetto solution compared with the zip tie thing. I can't help but picture a couple of dingle-berries hanging under the frame from the rear. Seems dirty but whatever floats your boat.
