    Question About Gen 2 Prices/Market

    Hello all!

I've been watching Gen 2 prices for the past 6-7 months or so but only in the past 3 have I been actively searching as a buyer. Since I'm new to the Viper market I have a few questions for those of you who are more seasoned.

I noticed that most sellers are asking more money than buyers are willing to pay. Is this something that happens every winter season since a good portion of the country is under bad weather and those respective buyers are not looking as much? Or is it something that's been trending lately with Gen 2 Vipers, or all Vipers for that matter?

From what I've seen, stock GTS models are selling in the low 30s to 35k basically; ACRs are around 40k. Am I off in this?

    Yes I believe that is a little low, 30-35 R/T, 43-60 GTS, 48-60 ACR.

It all depends... What are you looking for? A GTS or RT/10? Which color? What year? Super Low Mileage, reasonable mileage or higher mileage. Time capsule or a Driver? No mods, some mods or highly modded? Generally at this time of year the prices should be dropping a little bit.

What's your budget and we can tell you what you should be able to get with it.

There are gen 2 vipers from 30 -70K. It all depends on what your looking for and how much you want to spend. Each price year color shape and mileage all have to do with what the price will be. RT-10 with 80K miles and average condition will land you low 30's where as a GTS with high mileage will land you 3-5K more. Everything goes up from there. That's considering they are clean titles. If they are tainted titles like salvage or rebuilt, you can find them in the high 20's and early thirties again depending on mileage etc///too many variables.

I think it's a bit low compared to asking prices but I'm basing my previous quotes on sold prices from eBay and dealers I've spoken to.

Well I was initially looking for an RT/10 because I enjoyed the open air experience of the one I drove but what I'm really after is an ACR. Color I'm not picky on just don't want black (I don't think there was a black ACR). Low mileage and reasonable mileage is fine. The 911 I sold had 180k miles and I don't want another high mileage car at the moment; nothing wrong with it but in case I ever need to sell.

Mods...this is where it becomes tricky. I live in California so technically, any car I buy that's modded should have CARB legal headers and stock cats. That's pretty hard to do so I prefer something that's not modded I guess.

The cleanest car I've found so far is a Red 99 ACR with basically every mod I would ever do: cams, ported & polished heads, bigger throttle body, headers (CA legal), high flow cats (technically not CA legal but it will pass the sniffer test), 3.55 gears and a few other small things here and there. Guy is firm at 45k and has had it up for sale for about 8 months. That's kind of my back-up; If I don't find anything in the next few months I'll probably just get that one. Ideally, I would like to get an ACR for 40k and I did miss out on a local 2001 model.

I also missed out on a 99 RT/10 that had similar mods for 32k...he sold it by the time I had sold my 911 and was ready to purchase.

I'm not on a set budget, just trying to get a good deal and it just seems like they're not selling. I don't want a supercharged or twin turbo set up and that should definitely keep it under 50k. I like B/W but I don't care much for the premium so red will do.

Here's a nice one (99 silver GTS) offered for $37K. Doesn't have too many mods and is a desirable color. It's not an ACR, but to be honest, GEN 2 ACR's didn't really have so many extras over base.

If you're interested in a RT/10 and red, then I don't think you should have any problems finding one under $35K.

Here's a red 97 GTS going for near that amount.

I'm sure prices are negotiated for motivated buyers.

What kind of drugs are you doing? How is the starting price $30K for roadsters and $43K for all GTSs?

Prices are all over the map. There are many posts on all the forums of people who are looking for and purchased $30k Vipers. Good for them. Makes all of us who spent more feel "meh".

But for the true enthusiast who wants this car because they want the car for them, they don't pay as much attention to the price. I paid more than $40k for mine, end of story. I felt like I found the right one.

In my opinion, good RT/10's aren't going for less than $35k, good GTS's for less than $40k, and rare/desireable ones aren't going less than $45k. Many of the upgraded ones (TT and S/C) aren't going for less than $50k. Just what I see and feel, only my personal opinion.

I know miles, condition, and color matter, but I think there is about a $10k difference between the RT/10 and GTS.

I'm not trying to pick one up for 30k necessarily, just trying to get a good deal. If that means 35 or 40k that's fine but it has to be the right car. I'm basing my previous estimates on what I've seen things sell for and it's definitely a buyer's market I feel.

The silver one from the alley link sold for 35k after so many months.

I want the car for what it is and plan on keeping it for a long time, however, if I can get a better deal by waiting it out then that's what I'll do. Was just curious to see if this is a seasonal thing or more permanent trend in the Viper market...

42k - 60k for a stock Gts. Damn. Sounds high. I will sell my Gts right now for 42k, shoot I'll sell it for 40k with no second thought. Lol. I researched them for 3 years before I bought. Values haven't changed much in that time. 96-02 rt10 stock 28-38k, 96-02 Gts stock 33-43k.

I've been on multiple viper forums for about 5 years now and the only people I know that think this are GTS owners/sellers. I don't doubt that there's a price difference, but $10K is ridiculous.

Couldn't agree more. I just purchased under similar circumstances.

There is something to be said for getting the car you want and when you want. Occasionally that could cost you a couple grand. If you said "I want a Viper. Any Viper. All I care about is Gen 2 and under 40k miles on the odometer." Then obviously you can just get the cheapest one out there. I would say, without having looked at Gen II values much lately, if the car is everying you want and clean history and feels right...as long as the price is within 3-5 grand of what the comps are then get it. Unless you want the car for the purpose of wrenching, having the mods done already is great. Obviously it's cheaper for one, and it's already ready to go. It doesn't have to be at your tech or on jack stands for a couple weeks when you could be driving it.

What I mean is if you don't get it and end up getting one that isn't quite what you want, how much will you end up spending to do a few things that you do want? And believe me, everyone gets the mod bug at least a little bit. But paying 4 grand more than a similar GTS with a few more miles on it or no headers quickly becomes a push in terms of money. And if you don't get the one you want, how long do you end up kicking yourself when all you find are abused, run down examples?

FWIW that 97 on the alley looks pretty darn nice. Good mods and low miles but still a driver. Though I know nothing of its history.

The silver one on the alley sold for 35k yesterday; I contacted the owner as soon as I saw the link.

Check Kelley Blue! Their values supposed to be on what vehicles sold for in a given area. I just checked KB on a 2002 in very good condition with 20,000 miles trade in value. So I entered the identical info on both cars.

    GTS $45,260
    RT10 $37,976

Values seem a little high but the GTS definitely is worth more. It's funny how people make comments with nothing to back it up.
