ABS is a good thing. I was in the same boat when I was shopping. I had narrowed my search down to 2001 or 2002 Viper Race Yellow RT/10. Stock or maybe a few mods, but not modded out the ass. I found 2 bone stock 2001s VRY RT/10s available during my shopping period. I contacted both, one had 'numerous interested parties' and the seller wasn't interested in negotiating, the other seller was a sports car dealership that made the whole purchasing process a breeze.

If you track it and do not have abs they tend to lock up the passenger side front tire from what I hear. ABS was a must have for me.

It all comes down to how picky you really are. If small flaws are easy to look over, then I'd hold out and get the best deal you can. I was super anal about my car when I purchased it. It too had a few minor flaws, like a scratch under the side sill and a few nose scratches. The reality is that the cars are now old enough that even a low mileage car can have substantial out of pocket costs. Don't be fooled, stuff just happens, especially when you buy a garage queen and start actually driving it. As others have stated the post mid year 2000 and up ACR's had the Dynamic shocks that are going need constant service. As a note I have the early ACR shocks (Koni 2812) and they too leak. Figure rebuilding the shocks a must at 10,000 miles. Either way, you can't go wrong with an ACR. Make sure you check the door seals and look for wear marks in lower portions of the seals. They are a sure sign of door sag. Good luck!

I'm not too picky but I definitely want something in good condition overall. There's a 2001 ACR on eBay that is selling for less than anyone else by a decent amount but it has a few small scratches on the hood and most importantly, paint is bubbling by the rear hatch window. I can deal with a few small scratches but the bubbling of paint bothers me too much.

I have a few sellers I'm working with and trying to see if I can close a deal with. I am aware of the dynamic ACR shocks leaking but I was going to do more research into replacing them with just different shocks altogether.

As it looks like you're in LA, if you acquire a mid-2000-2002 ACR, you should talk to Dan Cragin at SPT. Dan's working on my (2000) ACR right now. Some of the work includes rebuilding my DS shocks. His rebuild includes a modification to the upper seal on the DS shocks that fixes the leaking issue.

Besides all that, Dan is the best there is. You should get to know him.

If there are any specifics regarding the ACR's you'd like to know about or have any questions, let me know. I've had two of these cars and have gone through them with a fine tooth comb.

Don't let not having ABS scare you. I track mine and never have a problem w/ locking the brakes up (stock brakes) as long as you have a good set of tires and know how to brake. Good tires are important with any viper but even more so with a non ABS one.

Yes!!!! This is so right. ^^^^^^^^ If you want the raw experience of driving a Viper by yourself, controlling the helm, get a Gen I or a Gen II '92-'00. From there on out each year becomes more driver-friendly. My driver-friendly cars are Lexus', quiet and need little skill to keep them on the road when I'm only wanting to get from one place to another...

But if your ABS braking is coming on, you're probably not braking correctly to begin with, and locking up the wheels.

I've emailed with Dan a few times regarding some cars that had been worked on by him just to confirm. Once I buy one it will be going to him for any repairs/mods.

I get your point GhostStalker27 and DaveW. The truth is I've only panic braked at most 5 times in my life and I think maybe once I felt the ABS go off. I drive pretty carefully but as I said you never know with crazy LA drivers. I'm not putting non-ABS cars out of the picture altogether.

Do you plan on upgrading it? If so how much. Remember that the earlier Gts engines are forged and can handle more power without having to upgrade internals. So I have been told. Also if your gonna upgrade shocks then kinda defeating the purpose of a acr kinda. Save money buy a older model for cheaper and use the extra money to build it the way you want. Only difference in engine is smooth tubes and it not forged piston, I believe.

Not planning on upgrading much honestly; I'm definitely not a huge fan of supercharging or turbo-ing since the car has enough power, as is. Never say never, though

The ACR package is more than just race shocks. It's springs, one piece forged BBS wheels (priceless), different oil filter adapter without oil bypass, five point harnesses, smooth tubes, K&N air filters, assorted badges. It's a bargain in the current market, someday the price differential will be astronomical. Also ACR's were produced from 99 - 2002, therefore they included what ever is standard on those years. So, 99 is forged and no ABS, 2000 is eutectic and no ABS, 2001-2002 is ABS and eutectic. As a side note, don't be fooled into believing non forged cars are slower. The fastest GTS time recorded was a 2000. Although as mentioned, if you plan on forced induction, the older platform is a better base. If you plan on N/A upgrades, my feeling is the later eutectic engines are tighter with a longer rod, and will make excellent power. Lots of choices and truthfully you can't go wrong with any of them.

Eddie, did you ever say if he has the Stock parts for the car?

  15. #90
I looked at several, when you see a B/W in the sunlight you will understand it's array of beauty. Black was my favorite color on a car until I saw mine...

The reason (in my mind) the B/W is special is because it was on the first year GTS and they modeled the GTS after the Shelby Cobra Daytona...
I do like the combo though... Allot!

He does not have the original parts; that would have been a significant plus to me and I would have probably bought it by now.

I don't even want to write this because I'm probably going to catch some flak here on the Gen 2 forum...but...I found a great deal on a Gen 4 coupe. High 40's for a low mileage 2009 coupe; I just couldn't turn it down. No stories, no bs, clean car being sold by a solid dealer. I'm picking it up tomorrow. HOWEVER, this does not put me out of potentially ever getting a Gen 2 again so I do appreciate everyone's input.

    Thanks!
    Eddie

Congrats sir. That's nothing to be ashamed about. We'll just want to see some picts. I'll just be jealous because you have nicer weather. I'm sure you'll run into plenty of brethren out there.

It's red, I'll post pics tomorrow if I can during a driving break. I'm curious to see how I'll like its "modern" feel and if I'll get used to it. If not...I know of a few Gen 2s I can pick up

    Thanks!

Forgot to mention car might have original tires on it from 2009. I'm supposed to drive it back 1,000 miles...maybe I should replace them before taking off.
