1992 Viper, Supposedly Belonged to Carroll Shelby

A friend of mine asked me about a neighbor's son's car. As I understand it, it's a 92 Viper with 9600 miles, number 79 that once belonged to Shelby.

I haven't spoken to the owner personally, but he wants cash offers. Apparently he's looking for big money.

I'm not in the market (as much as I'd like another) but I'm wondering how it could be documented. Seems to me that Shelby's Viper would be a lower number, or still in the hands of the Shelby company.

I'm guessing it'll need head gaskets and tires....and I also wonder if a '92 with Shelby history is worth a huge premium?

It wouldn't be hard to prove. Owner history would love st him as owners. PM me the VIN and I'll get you the info.

Jon B might know. I don't recall him having a 92. I do recall him and Fitzgerald Dodge doing a limited edition of Shelby Vipers back in the day.

I didn't recall any Fitzgerald Vipers in '92...but I could be wrong.

I have no further info, and since I'm not in the position to buy it...I'd rather stay out of the middle. Long story better told in PM.

Granger...all I know that could get us close to a VIN is that it's #79. Presumably, 1B3BR65E3NV100079?

Anything Shelby touched turned to gold.. I hope it works out for the guy.

Can't really be sure of provenance. Wasnt registered until 2006, so a lot of history missing.

I just realized that. It was registered in 2006 with 1800 miles on it. So the only explanation would be that someone used a dealer or manufacturer plate all those years in between..Still if you are claiming Carol Shelby owned this car, you would need to have something rock solid to back it up if that is your selling point..I highly doubt a car owned by Shelby would find its way to a dealer in Edison then a shitty dealer auction.

You're right. You would really need some hard evidence to support that claim. As an aside, there are still over 20 1992 cars that have yet to be registered.

Im guessing sitting in storage somewhere or in a collection...Any idea how many 1992 have been salvaged out and destroyed? But if you're going to make a claim that someone as influential and crucial to the auto industry as Carol Shelby owned this car, you better have some HARD documentation..Seeing how Carol Shelby designed the 1992 Viper it would be ridiculous to suggest he got vin#79 out of the batch.... If I design a car, Im taking #1 and #2 off the assembly line for myself..

I bet Tom Gale and Roy Sjoberg and others would have something to say about that representation, LOL !

Iacocca has number one, and Lutz got #2, which is now owned by a VOA member.

Sorry, "was influential in assisting with the design"....Better? The point being, that if he wanted to own a 92 Viper Im sure it would have been a lower production than #79...

I thought Viper vins didn't run in "sequential build #'s. Just because it's last #is 79 doesn't mean it was the 79th car off the line.

Plum, in the mid 90's I lived in Wayne and worked at Chrysler Financial. the local dealer in Boonton had a new 92 that the guys in my office said we had turned down $90K in '92. Think he finally sold it in 95 for mid-50's. Maybe it stayed local?

Although I believe the majority of 92 cars were built in sequence, you're right. The only way to be certain is to get the MDH info. Hopefully unlike the VCA, the VOA will at some point begin to collect this type of info to began the development of a data base for these cars. I know Viper Jeff has attempted to garner this info and he made several attempts to approach the VCA to put together some info. Unfortunately he was treated like a Lepper. He might be the guy to head up this useful project.
    Sorry, way off topic.

Thanks for the info Jack. I didn't know the 92's were built and numbered in sequence.

He probably could do it. Just needs to stop his whining and all the poor me crap.

Adel? He was the only one I know that had a GTS-R but could have sworn Joe Houss told me his was a replica. He's got the last B/W Gen V now. I'll ask Bobby, maybe he knows. Owned Vipers are rare in my neck of the woods, but I've had plenty come through.
