    oil pressure question

Last night I drove my viper around to get up to temperature and noticed that after the engine was at operating temperature, if I slowly let the revs climb the oil pressure follows suit and climbs to about 70psi. However if I am at half throttle or more, when she winds up closer to redline the psi drops to 40-50. I never gave it a second thought but last night I observed the oil pressure gauge start to temporarily flash red at around 5000 rpms. I havent been able to replicate the flashing red oil pressure gauge but I do know it sometimes happens on startup but then quickly goes away as the engine lubricates itself. Im wondering if the flashing red gauge was a software fluke of if something more devious is afoot. I checked my oil level and it reads safe.

I can't tell you about oil gauges flashing red - but I can tell you that the fluctuations you are seeing are perfectly normal. It's largely caused by the VVT solenoid actuating oil flow as you are climbing and dropping through the RPM range.

Once when tracking hard in 105 F ambient, I momentarily exceeded coolant temp of 240 F, and the gage lit red. I'm guessing your red oil pressure gage was not a fluke. I'd suggest taking it to a dealer, could be something wrong.

I'd be making sure that this issue was documented in service records somewhere, even if they can't replicate it. The startup part is normal as the engine builds pressure, but anything after that is not IMO.

Remember also to check BOTH sides of the dipstick when reading the level due to the reported differences observed.

I know a local viper owner here in pa that had the same issue and found out that a o ring in the oil pan was bad. This made for a drop in pressure on the gauge letting air in the pan. Dealer fix not a problem.

    Get it checked out!

Please keep us updated. With the recent posts about engine issues, I'm curious.

There was an update for the red light so take to the dealer and have that done, there was also an RRT for the oil pressure switch if you were getting fluctuating readings so also ask dealer about that while you are there.

Take it in for an oil change, you daily drive your car, get an oil change and in 3000 miles get another oil change. My blue one is in the shop right now for another oil change. I emailed Dave and Shon

in light of other troubled members, i have been sticking around or less than 3k rpms and being super attentive. just checked the oil about 6 times after letting her cool down for 5 mins and got roughly the same result each time (tried all kinds of methods to get different readings) the flash on my camera may distort it a little but the oil comes up to just at/a millimeter above the top "safe" line.

    Ed:

On my 2014, 5.7 Grand Cherokee, I usually set a soft code when I use Mobil 1 synthetic. The code relates to the oil pressure for the scheme that deactivates the cylinders.

Reporting back in. Oil changed out of Diff and Engine at 1,426 miles. Tech said engine oil was about a 1/2 quart- 1 quart low. Stated oil looked ok- no metal flakes in either to report.

Nope, wanted to check all the break in fluids to make sure she was in tip-top shape.

Thanks for the update. Seems everything normal then.
