    When Do You Recommend First Oil Change?

    I have about 1200 miles on my '13. Did you guys change your oil after the 500 mile break-in or did you wait longer?
    I don't recall what the manual says.
    Thanks for any input.

    Do it at your convenience, with the proper SRT filter, anywhere 500-1000 miles-ish

    DO make the effort to examine the dregs and drain plug for the 'usual' signs of break-in. a few teeny-tiny silty grains.

    6 month intervals per manual.

    Sounds like the oil change process will be basically the same as my Gen2 ? I know on some cars now the dealer has to do it for some reason or at least that's what I was told recently.

    Some cars now don't have drain plugs, so that makes it a little harder for the DIY type of guy.

    I posted the message below on the other forum yesterday in response to an almost identical question.

    I am also a firm believer in performing the first oil change at 500 miles. I did it on my TA this summer and the procedure was no different than my Gen IV. Performing the service on a four post lift makes the job a lot easier.
    Mine took the full 11 quarts of Mobil 1 0W-40. I used a Mopar 05038041AA filter. (prefilled with oil before install) It takes a good 20-30 minutes for all the old oil to drain out, so don't be in a hurry. You need a 13mm wrench for the drain plug and tighten it to 20 ft lbs.

    A friend with a lift offered to help me out so I plan on doing it this weekend. I also bought Mobil 1 0w-40 because I could not find 11 quarts of the Pennzoil.

    On a $100000 plus dollar car, oil is cheep comparably. I do a 500 1500 3000 6000 9 12 etc on all my new cars. Never hurts to get any floating metal out, just in case.

    I too used Mopar filter. Penzoil product. But Mobil 1 is just as good.

    FYI, Dodge Dealers (some or all) have SMOKING DEALS on oil and filter packages (Pennzoil Ultra synthetic or whatever is the top level PZ synthetic oil). I just took my 875mi. car in today and was about to pay the negotiated $105 for oil and filter when my Service Advisor offered the package. I purchased 6 oil + filter changes for $345 over 3 years. You can even purchase more for less. This is cheaper than I can purchase the oil and filter... . You also pick the intervals as long as they are within the end period (3 years in my case) and the service is nationwide at any Dodge Dealer!

    My dealer says the first one is free. lol I'd rather pay a competent hi performance shop. There's a couple of great one's in so-cal.. No dealer's for me!

    Mr. Viper commends you maintenance animals on your diligence! - Nice Job, and I'm totally like you guys - I always change the oil on any new car within 500 miles, even though it isn't 'required', and often at much lower miles than that. And I change ALL the fluids on any used car immediately! Engine oil, trans, diff, coolant,... if you didn't put it in there, you have no idea what you're getting. Fluids are cheap, compared with the alternatives.

    How frequently do u flush the brakes? I did once per year on the lambo but it was a garage queen.

    The oil industry loves you guys, you're dumping 11 qts of good oil out at 500 miles. If there was a more frequent need than what's listed in the service manual* Dodge would simply lower the mileage limit. They aren't in the business of replacing engines due to too long of a listed interval.

    * assumes normal driving, racing requires more frequent changes. And always make sure your oil level isn't low during changes.

    Brake Fluid Miles matter! Age matters as much. And 100 track miles = 1000 Street miles. It is supposed to be glycerin clear, and as it gathers moisture it quickly degrades thru most grades of craft BEER colors:

    Near-Clear; Beige; Tan; Yellow-ish; Honey Light Amber; Amber; Dark Amber; Brown; Dark Brown, Black.

    [And yes, I can give you brand-names of beers of each color......]

    The truth is, if you don't track your car you can wait til it turns BLACK! But If you EVER track your car, you don't ever want it darker than Honey-Light-Amber for a novice day. So complete bleed-change after every 4-6 track DAYS..... and I admit to sometimes cheating on full bleeds by using a turkey baster after every track day to suck the reservoir dry and replace it with a pint of new fluid. This lets me rationalize a couple more dates delay, and yes I do know I am fooling myself on reservoir fluid color!! Brake fluid does not recirculate anywhere near as quickly as clutch fluid. So the most vulnerable fluid down in the calipers is crap.

    If you are advanced-class HPDE and/or racing you will only let your brake fluid get to Honey-Amber ONCE.....then you will always bleed fully even sooner.

    I typically change it out every couple years, if no track days. Now with the Gen 5 reservoir feeding both the brakes and the clutch, I will be rethinking that.

    Thanks for the input everyone.
    We just finished changing the oil and filter, put almost 11 quarts in but we noticed the dipstick shows different levels on each side.
    It's like it enters the oil at an angle so the high side reads a lower level. We assumed it was better to make sure the lower reading was in the safe zone which meant the higher reading was above the top of the safe zone.
    Anyone notice this with theirs? Check both sides after you remove the dipstick.

    One other observation to add. The distance between the high and low marks of the safe zone of my 14 is smaller than my 13 was. Nine Ball can you confirm you see the same thing? It's like they decided they wanted a more specific amount of oil in the car, because on the 13 marks there was almost a 1.5 qt swing between them. On the 14 I'm guessing there's a 0.5 variance.
