THE IGNORE FEATURE WORKS, TRY IT...
Most auto body supply shops can put their mixed paint into a rattle can. Check with your local shops. If youre looking to match something actually on the car....the Viper GTS blue makes a better match from certain paint companies.
thx matt
I've heard that gen II GTS blue actually came in 4 slightly different shades. I heard you have to reference your VIN if you want a totally correct paint match. I can believe that there are variances, especially with early VINs, as they are assembled by hand and whatnot. I'm no expert though, I pretty much just got my Viper.
I can't speak as to whether or not there were 4 actual "shades" of the blue...but there may be variances in the formulas used by the body shops/paint suppliers when preparing the actual cocktail to make the color.
The service manual lists different codes for different paint suppliers...but no variances. Thinking out loud....the way Vipers were assembled...it would've been a mess to have 4 different colors. The parts were pre-painted by the companies that made them....and shipped for assembly by CAAP. Can you imagine what a job it would've been to track all those parts with potentially different variances in color?
I can tell you that (at least back when I had my '96) PPG did NOT match. The shop at the time blamed it on the actual metallic flake that PPG used. (If you had painted an entire car..where a match didn't matter...it would've been fine. Sikkens paint is what was used by the companies making the Viper parts when they were new.
I spent about 20 minutes talking with Sandy Emerling about this in Detroit this summer and he said that there were a number of shades used because the car is made out of a few different materials (i.e. the rear of a GTS is an injection mold type plastic material etc.). The paint companies had a hard time getting the color to look uniform across different materials - especially metallic vs non-metallic (which incidentally is what allowed the 3 white GTS's to be made - justified as a test for the paint process with a metallic stripe instead of the stone white).
Thawk97...that might make sense on different panels made of varying materials. However, the Viper Service Manuals do not list different paints for different panels for refinishing/repair.
Perhaps my point wasn't written clearly. There weren't 4 paint codes listed for the car (like "GTS Blue", GTS Bluer", GTS Bluest"). Chrysler only sold 1 GTS Blue touch-up paint, etc.
If the OP wants/needs the paint codes from the service manual..just say the word.
