I for one disagree w/ putting a V8 motor in the Viper...the V10 is the heart & soul of the car...re-skin the viper w/ a different body and call it something else...otherwise issue it DNR status & let it go peacefully...

I actually agree with this. Maybe not call it a Viper anymore.

The Viper is the Halo car. It is a better car all around. Faster, hand built and better handling. The Hellcats supercharged engine might put out some big numbers but the Viper is the halo, not a Challenger.

He was talking about the Halo of the Challenger lineup. You really think even a 1,000 hp Challenger would be a better all around platform than a 640 hp Viper Supercar?

Trust me I wish the Viper made a little more power but it's still does everything well and it will still walk away from any pony car on a road course drivers being equal.

I hope that you are right and I misunderstood his comment! I don't care how much hp any challenger or other car in that segment has! They have nothing on the Viper. It's just a kick to the balls, if the challenger has more hp period! 640 hp was a huge mistake and the sales reflect that! Are we gonna go down this road again? Make the viper king again and it will sell!

I agree with you 100% I was prepared for it to have alittle more 650-670 but I didn't expect them to go as far as they did in terms of straight line numbers. It is what it is at this point se we'll see what happens on the 19th.

Yep, the 19th will be a VERY interesting day. Either we will be carrying FCA/Dodge brass out on our shoulders into the streets, or strapping them to a turn table and whipping them like Quasimodo! I don't see where there is any in-between. They either get it right or they simply don't get it.

There is a possibility this Hellcat Challenger is no more than a nod to the past to celebrate the 100th Anniversary. Let's face it the HemiCuda was the premier car over all the years of the brand (yah I now Plymouth name, but close enough) so this Challenger being the closest to that car, it kind of makes sense to jazz it up, pump it up and get the publicity with the model they chose.

Now, just maybe the Viper refresh is a lot more extensive than we think or can imagine and the new Viper could be a clear nod direction to the future for the Dodge brand, placing it as a true halo car once again. Let's face it, the plant close down to sell inventory is a great cover story but it was down for a VERY, VERY long time. Much longer than is needed for a minor face lift or refresh. Time will tell but the 19th is going to be interesting. Convertible is there, and rolling around Detroit, if they let us see it.

If the refresh is a pretty different direction for Viper, that alone could clean out on-lot stocks as maybe the 13/14 will be unique to those two years or maybe it is three years (13/14/15)and we are going to be seeing a completely different 2016 Viper model. A lot of people love the older lines, but many wanted a more modern looking Viper. That could be a direction they take.

Let's face it, the lack of replacement parts, etc. for the guys with Warranty, can surmise that maybe they are moving in a different direction with Viper. It is pretty easy for them to change directions as it is not like they have tons of parts in the pipe that they have sitting around collecting dust losing money. It is a pretty lean operation which means changes can be made much easier.

Two weeks and counting down! Can't wait!

    Agreed.
You have the SRT Core, SRT and SRT Hellcat. It's the halo Challenger.
I am not 1 bit upset the Challenger has this much power. Kudos to everyone involved. Totally trolled everyone. 600+ and bam 707! In your face world. Love it! Would love to have one for a daily!

ninja edit- I also agree the news is bittersweet. I really feel like the viper has been turned into the first child of the next-gen SRT brand. All the focus is on the newborn and even if there is a plan for the Viper, we're in the dark about it.
Personally, I do not want to shell out big bucks for a 2014 Gen V (I am in the market for a new car now) and then immediately find out that to update the car, or add power to a 2015, I need to shell out $10,000--$20,000 for a supercharger and likely void my warranty. Only OEM power is the answer, and it should be retroactive to all Gen Vs.

If anything I see it as more of a "lol thats all you have with blowing the C7Z?"

    Granted, different purpose vehicles.

Pretty much all of us told him it would be a terrible kick in the teeth of Viper owners, current and future, for the Viper to no longer be the king of HP at Dodge. The only comfort he offered was the new PCM that hasn't come out yet. He showed us pics of dyno charts of a GenV, the new PCM and with and without exhaust mods. He was excited about the numbers. I think this new PCM, if it ever sees the light of day, may be an interim-peace offering for GenV owners. Based on the charts I saw, the engine would be producing somewhere between 705 - 730hp to achieve the range of numbers we saw that day.

If the Viper evolves the next evolution must make people freak as they're doing over the Hellcat. Let's hope it's a freak out in a highly positive manner.
Any Mopar PCM and any Headers without a CARB stamp will be illegal in California for use on the Street. There are many Vipers sold and used on CA streets, so an illegal aftermarket computer and headers are not the answer in CA.

Those Hellcat brakes need to roll into the Viper. 15" two piece rotors and 6 pistons would be a great add. Come on!!!!!!

Funny how all the ' HP is not the answer guys" are now looking through the peepholes.

The Viper will finally get its identity back when it trumps the 707..650 numbers.

Soon...very soon. I can see a lot of trade-ins coming soon to a dealer near you.

A friend of mine sent this to me
This is what his source sent to him.
.... I have a buddy who was at the track testing two weeks ago and he gave me a few numbers that have yet to be announced.

    With the 6 Speed:

    0-60 in 3.5 seconds
    1/4 mile in 10.91

    Withe the 8 speed auto:

    0-60 in 3.4 seconds
    1/4 mile in 10.76 seconds

Keep in mind this is a car that you can buy from the factory and get these numbers with zero modifications. The car is expected to be just over 4,100 LBS which is heavier than the GT500 (3900lbs), but lighter than the ZL1 Camaro (4,180lbs)

To put things in a rivalry perspective:

    GT500:

    0-60 in 3.5 Seconds
    1/4 Mile in 11.6 seconds

    ZL1 Camaro:

    0-60 in 3.8 seconds
    1/4 mile in 12.1 seconds

Insane et. I want to know the MPH? 133?

  25. #150
If those #s are accurate (doubt it) then the challenger is faster than the viper
