I asked the Viper Wizard and he says to use ATF+4. So that is what I was going to put in my Gen.1. I never got it changed because I bought my ACR. It's sitting on my shelf.

Dextron ATF was discontinued in Vipers in MY2000 and newer, on favor of a full-synthetic 75W85 fluid. A TSB was issued retro-active to 1996. And NGRattle was a factor in the decision to change away from ATF.

No harm is done by continuing to run the "factory fill" ATF of pre-2000. The trannies even have a red OE tag on the drain plugs!

Same as Factory Fill motor oil was 10w-30 for 1992-1995...no harm in NOT running Full Synthetic now, but there is a BETTER CHOICE of oil options now, for the motor and the trans.

ATF+4 is the factory fill for the TR-6060 in the 2008+ Vipers. The transmission in question here is a T-56, and the spec is different.

All f-bodies and Vettes of similar years with the T-56 spec'd Dexron III ATF. As JonB stated, later runs of the T-56 in the Viper (2000+) spec'd 75w85 (Castrol Syntorq would fit this bill) to reduce the gear rattle these transmissions are known for.

I would probably either use a Dexron III or the Castrol Syntorq, but I'd steer clear of ATF+4 unless someone could verify that it is also compatible with the T-56.

To my knowledge, the change to Syntorq happened during '98 MY production. I have a late '98 RT/10 (November) and it has already the Syntorq sticker on it.

I just had the fluid in my 2003 changed a couple weeks ago. I can look on my invoice to see what my dealer used.

I remember reading several posts by experienced Viper techs on the forums telling folks that the fluid that they said that the dealership used was definitely wrong. (More often occurring in Gen 3 power steering, though.)

I don't know that it makes much of a difference what is used for the trans; but, it does need to be the correct stuff for the Power Steering for a Gen 3.

It really shouldn't make much of a difference...like I mentioned above, the GM cars that ran a T-56 all called for Dexron III, which is a pretty light weight ATF.

If you notice a lot of neutral gear rattle that wasn't there before, you probably have the thinner stuff.

I talked to several people since I posted this. The final choice I made was to go with the dealer reccomended version of the CastrolSyntorc stuff... its basically their Mopar Synth Tran oil 75w-80 with an additive..this was according to a change they made around 97..and the only reason was the neutral rattle. i found the Tech Recall and change on another forum. Ill try to post.

THE YEAR MATTERS!! The OP Milara was wise and kind enuf to post up 1996 RT. Not all answers apply to all years!

Milara: Don't return the 75w85 Mopar Synthetic Fluid..its FINE! Mopar does not refine oils,....they just re-badge Castrol, etc....
