    Grounding straps under the hood?

I know the straps under the hood are grounding straps, but what are they actually grounding?

I took the hood pad off my hood years ago, so the ends that were supposed be going into the hood have just been laying there.
I just put a Gen IV hood on and bought a new hood pad (which came with new straps), so I actually hooked them up.

Considering I drove without them for years, and the part of the straps that go into the hood are just going into fiberglass anyway, what the hell are they grounding, and why do they even attach to the hood? The one on the driver's side jumps from the hood hinge mount down to around the windshield wiper, then to the hood, so maybe something with the hinge to wiper? The passenger side just goes from the hinge to hood.

Curiosity is getting to me on this one. I looked in the service manual, but it doesn't say what they're grounding.

They ground the hood out to improve your radio reception

The grounding straps are static surpresser/eliminators.
This is what happens when you remove them in certain temperature/humidity conditions.
My son will never be the same.
