So I Met a GTS Owner Today..

And I said, "So I see you went with the GTS instead of the SRT!"

He said, "No, they're all SRTs!"

    Very new-breed Viper owner.

I mentioned that I'd had an ACR. He was clueless.

Anyway, good for him for buying one. I know he's happy with his purchase... just wish they had a little history DVD that went with them.

curious, why does it matter? Most corvette owners don't know the history nor really do many car owners in general if the prior models, etc. I think the ones that do are rarer for the most part. Don't get me wrong, I am a bit fanatical about knowing the history and it is interesting to me, but for many, it is just a car.

btw, technically, he is correct on the SRT aspect. It is the brand of the car and confusingly so the model for the base car.

    Agreed...it isn't a Viper SRT...the non-GTS, Non-TA vipers are just base Vipers.

Perhaps when he felt that he had to let you know that a GTS is an SRT, he thought you were the clueless one, and held his tongue afterward.

But, yes, I do not doubt that he might be new to Vipers. That is what SRT was striving for.

Ill bet he meant that they're all SRT instead of Dodge(which still isn't correct but certainly the vibe put out there by the company).

Doesn't bother me. I'm just glad he bought one, to support SRT. Unlike many of the Gen V haters out there, most being current Viper owners.

Those folks are broke & jealous. If you really see the car in person, sit in it, and drive it, you must buy it. I'm currently looking for a second one after seeing that sick black TA.

A lot of folks are not broke or jealous. I genuinely do not like the styling of the new car. I've seen multiple in person of various colors and while the yellow and black color appeals to me it doesn't have the look I want. I have not driven one but realistically that doesn't matter since I can't get past the look. It has a couple positives for me but more negatives. Now if it resembled the volado viper more it would be difficult not to pursue one.

    Signed,
Not too broke and definitely not jealous

We all have opinions, and looks are subjective. But, you rarely (if ever) see someone go into the 1st, 2nd, 3rd-4th gen forums and complain about how any previous generation Viper looks, performs, or drives. Gen 5 owners could just as easily go around and act like that, but they do not. I never understood why so many Viper fans (regardless of gen ownership) feel like it is okay to bash the newest car, in a club forum about Vipers. I'd expect such on a Corvette forum.

This is a really great point. Me for example, I don't like the Gen1 look at all, but can honestly say have never even looked in the Gen1 forum section and the last thing on my mind is to slam one. Along the same lines, I don't like the new corvette either, but have no interest in going into vette forums to browse or saying something. If I don't like the look of a car or the car in general, why would I be posting in its forum dedicated forum?

I don't use words such as always, never or all. But I do feel that most are that way. My opinion based upon some incredibly hateful documentation I've read. If you don't share the opinion I'm fine with it. PS I love your car. Smoky Tires just listed his for sale. Another Gen IV ACR gem; one of one I believe.

I just don't agree with calling someone who chooses not to buy the latest and greatest broke and jealous. Especially if they have a previous generation and you didn't get on board until the V came out. If anything I would call those who own an older Viper loyal.

  16. #16
I mean the commentary on the car is just plain evil. But you can call them loyalists. If they're so loyal why don't they support a hurting company that had to fire workers and close the plant? There are great deals some of which are 30% off. The prior gen guys who bought a V love it & have done their part. And I've done mine.

Not everyone chooses to purchase or can afford a $100+k car. (or several in your case) I am glad you did your part. Congrats.
Just because someone chooses not to or can't doesn't make them broke or jealous.
    I'm done.

I think you both have valid points. I seem to see the following three camps:

    1) folks that bought GenV's and love them. Some are first time Viper owners (good thing) and some are prior Viper owners (like me) which is also a good thing. Seems like 99% praise from the car from both of these camps.

    2) Folks that knock the GenV for this or that, but then you find out they have not driven one, some have not even seen in person. They own prior gen's, but really how is their opinion even valid if you have not driven or seen one. To me, this is not loyal behavior and just because someone owned a prior model does not give great insight to the new one. Make you wonder what is driving the behavior... can't afford one or ???

    3) Folks that own prior Vipers and are waiting for a conv or ACR to match what they have now. This group totally makes sense to me and in fact I was in the conv camp until I drove the GenV and had to have it.

    4) Folks that don't like the looks of the car. Again, totally fine and probably meant they did not like the Gen2 either.

Lastly, there are the people that just either can't afford one or are not willing to pay the new car price and will wait for the used market. They are honest with that up front and that is all good.

I bought 2 new Gen IV Vipers from dealers in the last 3 years. Does that mean I havn't supported SRT either.?

  20. #20
depends if they were new or used. If used, it did not help SRT. If new, it did.

Both brand new. I am the 1st owner.

Really though, I think anyone who has bought a Viper, any Viper, is in some way, supporting SRT.

You're definitely not part of the problem. Back to OP's original point of the thread: is there anyone else who interpreted the V owner's statement that they're all SRT to mean that the brand is SRT now (as opposed to Dodge) instead of what's implied, namely that he didn't realize there were different models or variants?

I was told when I bought my new TA that the books no longer come with the purchase. Was that misinformation?
