Has Anyone Done Braided Stainless Hoses in Engine Compartment....Pictures Please!

Hi All:

While I'm not a bling kinda guy, I do seem to like brightening up my engine compartment with polished billet/aluminum/stainless. I have already changed out most of the screws/bolts and changed them to stainless and also added (what I could find) billet pieces. There are some small hoses that I think would look nice in braided stainless and actually did see someone's engine with them. I do worry about flex and whether that would present a problem as the engine torques.

Anyway, if you have added/upgraded pieces and have pics...love to see them!

The only one I have done is the vacuum line from the master cylinder to the intake manifold, I got some steel braid, sleeved it over the existing pipe then fitted some red anodised clamp terminals to make it look like Aeroquip

While I like the look of braided lines, I'm not a fan of anything shiny in the engine compartment...it just looks too pimped to me. But I guess if you don't go overboard, it might add a certain touch. I'd much rather get CF parts though...

Indy>>>I hear ya! I am trying to do it tastefully....never liked chrome, too in your face, but do like the look of polished billet/stainless pieces. Pieces are pretty limited for the Gen II, but I think I've got most....just recently found out about the stainless radiator overflow tank...still thinking on this one. I do find when I show the car, that the billet/stainless does add a little to the look of the engine compartment.

Also, any reaction to the valve cover overlays...I think they are nice, don't really want to powder coat mine and intake at this point.

Just a word of caution:

Be careful when installing braided lines, the stainless braid will cut anything like a saw blade that comes in contact with it! For areas that do rub against it you must make certain you install some type of anti-chafing insulation on it.

Secondly, if you ever have any type of grounding issue, i.e. loss of ground, the braid will act as a ground and immediately ZAP a hole in it!

Doug Makes a very good point here, the automotive stainless braid is very tough and you normally use a stainless steel cutting disc to cut it, the braid I used for this particular hose is the more flexible thinner braid that you find on flexible sink plumbing fixings at your local DIY store, being in the DIY Trade I found an old flexible pipe, cut the ends off and slipped off the braiding, then re-sleeved it onto the existing pipe to brighten it up.

Yes, the recycle valves come up now and again on ebay for around $40.00

Wow, guys thanks! Fatboy>>>appreciate the photo...looks nice, but now that Doug brought up the points about cutting and ground issues...think I'll pass. Am considering adding the stainless radiator overflow tank though...nice look (always keeping original parts for next owner...if there is a next owner)!

If you use the thinner braid as I did there are no wires around that area to cause earth problems I think Doug was just giving everyone a general caution on dressing the Engine bay

RT Serpent>>>>I actually like the look of the overlays, but got totally bashed for considering adding to my engine! I have decided to have them powdercoated next winter when car is put away. I did see cast aluminum valve covers maybe two years ago, but could never justify spending $800 to $1,000 for valve covers....less to just powdercoat them along with the intake.

I appreciate the comments. I get a ton of great reactions to the engine bay from viper owners and non-oners.
… I get very few who don't like. Doesn't really matter though, I quite like it.

Come to think of it, I get the same reaction to the car in general. Some love the viper…. others have called it
a "clown shoe car" LOL!

My uncle found this out the hard way with his Z06. Oil Cooler lines were replaced with braided stainless lines. Chafed the wire on the lower fan motor, created a dead short and a NICE sized hole in the cooler line. Lots of oil on the track after that one. Take the advice on this and use the anti-chafing material.
