Just got a new to me 08 with 28k miles. I’ve had several Gen1-3 but no 4. So shifts are smooth but I hear a loud “clunk” when I let off the clutch and the trans engages. It all feels good but I’m not use to the definite “clunk”. Is this normal??

I have 2008 and I dont get it
Doesn’t do it unless I am quickly releasing the clutch while applying throttle. If I ease off the clutch I hear nothing. If I shift quickly and get on the throttle I hear a clunk. It’s just a mechanical clunk and the shift knob has no vibration or anything. All gears shift smooth!
Somewhat common complaint. I don't know if anyone has ever pinpointed an exact cause, but this is certainly not the first time I'm hearing of it. Search "clunk" and you can read about others' experiences with the same problem. Mine does it a little, but only when the car is cold. Once it is warmed up, it goes away.
Some of it is the backlash present in the gears and input/output shaft splines (transmission & differential), and some of it is probably in the clutch. The OEM limited slip diff is also known to have sticking issues when the fluid hasn't been changed in a while, but that usually only shows up during tight turns.
Based on your description, I wouldn't worry about it.
Steve, thanks again for the helpful info. Yea, I figured it was something "normal", and I searched "noise" but not "clunk". Since it only sounded in my release speed on the clutch I thought maybe it was the clutch "biting" or something.
Also, I'm still feeling out the the Drive by wire....not sure yet. It feels weird until you get and stay up in rpms. I'm not sure what I think about it. You can definitely feel that split second lag from a stop.
Does anyone know the normal around town rpm shift points on these TR6060s where using a clutch would be optional like where you can just shift it without the clutch? I more want to know so that in case my clutch ever went while I was out somewhere that I can still get it home without grinding the gears...
