Gen V Steering Wheel Retrofit to Gen IIII Car

Incredible work and postings on owners that have dine this, but a couple (lingering) questions.

    1) Is the Gen V Airbag (also) functional / backwards compatible in this setup or does extra work need to be done to make it so?

    2) Saw owners like (Mad Machinist) were to cover the button holes / controls from the Gen V too. Does this mean you can purchase e less expense Mopar steering wheel - e.g. Part 5np57hl1aa (and components) from the early Gen V’s too...assuming you fabricate and cover opening?

    Happy mid-October Viper-nation

    1. Air bag is compatible, but you have to add a ground wire. It will be evident when you try to wire it up and there's only 1 on the Gen3/4. I just grounded it direct to the steering wheel.
    2. Yes, I just buy the $350 steering wheels. The difficult part to find in my experience is the rear cover. I have one steering wheel that came with the wheel buttons so i just left them in place. The trim ring that comes with the hole for the buttons is like $30.

SNKEBIT, That center horn button looks really nice.
On mine I just had my painter fill in the wholes before painting the inner cover. You will also have to do a little filling on the ID of the GEN 5 wheel to get it to fit. This is one of the best mod's I have done to my GEN 4.DSCN0603.jpg

Love the group reply along with the and inspiration that you’ve -each- outlined here...both with so much detail and via completeness.

Interesting trying to find a proper replacement OEM airbag (module) for the ‘03, so when I came across this (option), got me really excited. And appreciate the subtle directions you each took it to make it yours!

Just wanted to make sure I had the right pieces, before going down this path, but seems like a brilliant and logical update to a III/IV.

Thanks for setting the stage again and sharing your expertise!

Clarification : Will any of these airbags work, or do you need a specific model that covers all years of Gen V? (Couple show fitments only with ‘16/‘17.

I find the Gen5 airbags from $300-500. Any Viper Gen5 airbag will work. I used a 2x2" Gen3/4 emblem printed to sticker paper, laminated and it fit well over the Gen5 emblem on the center of the bag.

Awesome and will look for a domestic (and better) source on this, and hopefully not the unicorn (like) availability on these...yet.

Just saw another post that you are very abroad...so please be safe over on the other side of the world and thank you again for these exchanges!

Yup, filled the Stryker emblem with finishing putty, sanded smooth, painted, then decal.
