    Supercar

Just had an exchange on another social media platform about whether or not the Viper is considered a Supercar.
    Thoughts?

Super car to me implies some level of being cutting edge. Carbon fiber everything, active aero, super intricate engine, cool tricked out stuff, blah blah blah. Really the viper is the opposite with its 6spd manual, massive 8.4l pushrod v8, steel frame, etc . It’s raw and brute. That’s why it’s so loved.

    Exotic, yes. Super car, no.

I'm not even sure I would consider it exotic in any sense besides its rarity.

It's a muscle car, plain and simple. 8.0/8.3/8.4 liters of pure bad-assery.

Agree, Viper made its own category!

  11. #11
No super car or exotic. The ME 412 would have been though

Muscle car, no. Wrong category. Put a Viper next to a dozen known muscle cars and it would look out of place

Sports car, yes. That said, also Hand built, very Limited production, Unique power train, Raw and unforgiving, Outstanding performance, Beautiful and AMERICAN.

I guess it's subjective, but to me at least, an exotic is a rare highly desirable sports car.

100% SUPERCAR, Not Hypercar, but 100% Supercar. Low build numbers, hand stitched interior, carbon panels and carbon interior options, customer paint options, dash plaques car build Number. Gen V was a massive leap forward from the Gen1, 2, 3 and 4 Vipers Platform sharing with parts from an F car. Previous suspension platform sharing with Mercedes SLS, So now you have a Chrysler Lamborghini V10 massively modified over the years for more BHP So input from both Lamborghini and Ferrari. Of course its a Supercar. TA Viper smashing Track records others could not match, Huge pedigree of former racing history FIA GT, ALMS, LM24hrs Daytona 24hrs, The only thing that let it down was the car being sold from a regular Dodge Dealership who had little or no clue on the customer profile and service mechanics many of whom had never seen one! They should have set up a separate platform for Viper Just like BMW did with Mini and GM did with Corvette. In Europe I can tell you the Viper is readily accepted in Supercar circles, Even being invited to exclusive Ferrari Events and Concourse events, I even got asked to take my Gen II to Italy to take part in the Best of Italy tour (having Lamborghini engine connection).

I would put the FGT in the Supercar bracket and the Saleen in the Exotic Bracket, but its a close run thing.

The Viper is a 2 seat Race car which was designed for track and road use. Corvette has always been Americas Sports car, but the latest Corvettes are certainly making big leaps forward.

Mmmm I guess its subjective, theres a few cars in that list above I would move into different categories! Dodge Demon would go in the Muscle car list for a start! Koenigsegg Agera would be in the Hypercar Exotic list as would the Bugatti Chiron and the Veyron That book even list Corvettes!

Depends on the Viper. "Super cars" don't have $40K 20 year old versions on the road. Far too many made over the years. Super cars also denote a certain level of quality in the build and materials used which most earlier Vipers certainly don't have. Now if the Gen V ACR-E was the only Viper ever made...THAT would be both a tough call. Definitely ticks the performance and rarity boxes.....build quality is a B or B-......Probably a supercar....maybe an exotic?

I would not trust the judgement of the author of that book considering some of the cars on that list

Heck there were FAR more mid engine Ferrari's made each respective year than Vipers.. its absolutely a Supercar. In looks, rarity, performance and all. There was a time F308's, F328s, F348's and F355's were available at super discounted prices also.. resale value isnt always an indicator of supercar status.

yea... Demon is on the fence in traditional terms for sure.

Is the Porsche 911 a supercar? Probably not, but what about the GT3? Or GT3RS / GT2RS ?

is it related to performance, price, rarity..?

These are all very broad and even ambiguous terms.

GT3/2/etc are really gray areas imo. It's got the unique tidbits, it's expensive, it's relatively rare and it sure as hell has the performance. However, just unique in that it shares a platform with a "pedestrian" car (relatively speaking).
Kind of like the Z06s of the past (current one blurs lines more). It's supercar performance, but when we think of "supercar" we also think there's got to be something "super" beyond lap times, as I said above. Active aero, super tweaked cutting edge engine, very precisely engineered. That's why the C6 and c7 Z06s were never "supercars" to me. They're just fucking fast and great bang for the buck.

I see the viper as much more as an exotic than a supercar.

Everyone's definition of exotics and super car will be different, IMO there is no right or wrong, and people will never agree on it either

For me Exotic goes even above supercar where it should be not only rare but difficult to obtain, which would command a large large price tag.

Definitely agree that exotic should not be sharing a platform of a "pedestrian" car
