    Clutch replacement questions

I am going to be replacing the clutch in my '94 soon, and I'm not sure what to purchase. I think I'm on the original clutch, with 32k miles. Engagement is at the very top of the pedal, no slipping and no other problems. I am budget conscious, so I'd rather not replace the slave cylinder and throw out bearing if it's not necessary. OEM is my preference. So If anyone has recommendations on what to watch out for, which parts to replace etc... I would love to know your thoughts.

If it is not slipping and there are no other problems, why are you replacing it?

I personally would bank on replacing everything in the area if you're going to drop the transmission. The slave has lasted 28yrs, but its not gonna last forever. LUK clutch is pretty cheap and I believe was OEM, the pilot bearing comes with the kit. Last time I looked the slaves are on back order. I know on the gen 2 the service manual states to replace the flywheel (vs turning it) if there is excessive hot spots. something to think about prior to dropping the trans and waiting for parts.

I only changed my clutch bc my slave cylinder started leaking this year (original at 13k miles).

The slave is more likely to fail than the clutch. You're wasting money not saving it by not doing the slave.

Why are you deciding to change it?

At $175 I would rarely drop the tranny without putting a clutch in too. You can clean up the flywheel with a DA if it needs it. You do not need to remove it to do that but protect the pilot bearing from dust if you do it in the car.

Replacing it because engagement is at the very top of the pedal and shifts have become difficult and unpleasant, and because I don't want to damage the flywheel by running it down too far.

Thank you Dave for the link. I will go ahead and replace slave cylinder as well.

Take a good look at your engine/trans mounts as well as they can cause difficult shifting, plus they are prone to cracking. Especially on a 28 yr old car...

Slave cylinders are on back order across the board, Rock auto has none, same with Autozone, Summit Racing and many other Vendors, Rock auto did have a close out sale on some throw out bearings, I would at least swap out the bearing even if you cant get a Slave cylinder, the Pilot bearing comes with the LUK kit , to remove the old pilot bearing from the Flywheel, pack some bread into the centre of the old bearing then using a tight drift hit the bread which will slowly push the bearing out of the flywheel, you can also use thick grease, but the bread is less messy. Before doing this make sure the replacement supplied pilot bearing is the correct internal diameter as the transmission shaft!

I think that clutch kit also services other vehicles with the Tremec T56 like some GM cars. They have a smaller input shaft at the pilot bearing. The plastic install alignment tool may also be incorrect for Viper fitment. I use the KD Tools pilot kit.
