    Aim SmartyCam3 Sport Questions

If anyone is using the SmaryCam3 Sport for video/data logging? If so, I'm hoping you can share your experience with it. Would you recommend it? Any disadvantages with it? Does it work well with data logging using the CAN? Looking to use for my next track outing.

    Thanks
    Tony

I'm interested in this subject as well - but with focus on OBD-II compatibility.

These threads have been around for several years with a lot of thoughtful input, but could use some updating.

Here's one called TrackAddict I've been looking at some lately - reasonably priced and runs on Android or iOS.

Do yourself a favor and buy the RaceLogic Vbox HD2. I've had multiple systems including the AIM. The HD2 is by far the best and has the best analytics. Hooks to OBD II. Someone on here built an overlay for the video that looks like the Viper dash. The overlay displays MPH, RPM, Coolant Temp, Oil Temp, Oil Pressure, IAT, Steering angle, clutch, gear, throttle, etc. You can do side by side lap comparisons with video (your own laps or someone else's). It can show you your theoretical best lap based on the best you've driven every section (it can even create a composite video of your theoretical best lap by stitching the individual videos together).

Luvspeed and I compare our laps on the analytics and we can analyze exactly why someone is faster section by section. Turns out he shifts faster than I do.

The advantage to using AIM stuff is that most people use it, so you have more people to compare with. More people at the track that can show you stuff. I don't use data at this point, but I will when I have more free time. At every track event I've done there are always a couple of AIM experts around and everyone else is using AIM. I bought a motec dash for my Turbo build, and the Motec data is supposedly way better than AIM, but if nobody else is using it or knows how to understand it, then it's not of much use to me. So will probably run some AIM equipment as well.

You can upload data from Harry's, AIM, Garmen Catalyst, and other systems in the Racelogic Analytics program.

Thanks for the feedback. Race Keeper, RaceLogic, etc. are awesome systems but beyond my needs. I say this today but in 2 years will be wishing I purchased one of them. Nonetheless, very cool that RaceLogic Analytics can work with AIM data. I was wondering if anyone installed an Aim system in their GenV and run into issues with logging, or mounting of the camera, etc. Seems pretty straightforward.

My old smarty cam has worked fine for years. But I didn't install it.

There's an AIM SmartyCam3 Duo coming out this summer...which really means that we'll probably won't see it until next spring at best. I have a track weekend coming up and I'll spend time looking at various setups while in the paddock. Probably use the rest of this year to research, etc. but great information in this thread. It's amazing to see how far these systems have evolved and continue to evolve.

The really nice thing about the Racelogic system is the scene setup that they will provide to you on request. It was developed by someone on here and has components that look like the Gen 5 stuff. For example steering angle is represented with numbers and a turning Gen 5 steering wheel. See attached. In upper left corner it will fill in the track map. The rest of the blue box will be track video. With two cameras it will include a smaller window of the second camera.
