Just speaking intuitively (aka completely out of my ass), the spoiler becomes less and less effective (relatively speaking) as speed gets higher and you just create a sublayer over it. Now it's pretty tall so maybe not so much, but a wing won't have that issue. A splitter and wing won't continue to increase at the same ratio either.
    This may be of interest. You can see the flow characteristics of these two different spoiler configurations.. They were taken at a standing mile event at close to 180 mph. The steeper (upward) the angle of airflow coming off the spoiler, the more downforce and drag is being generated. The last photo is William Hubble's ACR in the rain.
