I'd ask Sneaky Snakes (I believe their forum name is SlowHatch). He just did Tail of the Dragon within the last month or so.

We've always stayed somewhere on the south side of Knoxville and just driven down in the morning.

Depending on your choice, one thing to keep in mind this time of year is your proximity to UTenn and whether or not they're having a home game on the weekend that you're going to be there (assuming you're there for the weekend). This won't affect your Dragon experience much, but can/will affect room prices.

I just got back from doing Cherohala Skyway and Tail of the Dragon on two wheels a few weeks back along with a ton of other great roads in North GA and Western NC. We normally stay in Murphy, NC or Bryson City, NC. The Nantahala Outdoor Center also has lodging. Just don't be this guy:

Looks like SlowHatch put up a video for his run on 28S. 28N from Franklin is even better.

I would have liked to know he was coming to my backyard and joined him.

Just got back last Sat , we did the Cherohala Skyway, Tail of the Dragon, Dolly Wood, Gatlinburg and the Foot Hills parkway which is now my favorite , 1500 mile trip father and son, and I finally got to use the R888R's for the curves, there aren't any curves in Florida...lol As soon as I can I will try to post a little video.
