New to Dallas need shop to put Cats back on

Hello - I was in Tennessee and my catalytic converters on my 2006 SRT booth blew out. I then went to straight pipes after that and loved it. Now that Im in TX I need to add the Cats back and probably go back to X exhaust to pass emissions. Any trusted shops for me to check out to get this done? Thanks

You don't NEED them to pass emissions. All they do is plug into the OBD port to read codes and check readiness, so you can just get the ECU tuned and have the cat codes turned off. I pass my 2005 Cobalt SS like that every year - big turbo car with everything emissions related removed (EVAP, Cats, etc)... allegedly.

BUT, if you insist... there are a few Viper specialty shops in the area. The first to pop into my head is RSI.

I highly recommend BSP motorsports in Frisco. They know a lot about vipers. Brandon the owner did the pre purchase on my 2004 viper and did a great job. He was able to point out lots of intricacies I wasn’t aware of on the car and found a few things I needed to address. Check them out if you’re anywhere near there.

If they're tuned out... nothing. Just go get it inspected. They don't do a visual inspection and they don't run an O2 "sniffer". Again, they only plug into the OBD port and check for codes and system readiness.

If your CEL is not on, but still operational, there will likely be no issue. You can run no O2 sensors on rear cats and pass in Texas as long as you have not other "Not Ready" issues. You are allowed one Not Ready issue for your model year. No front or rear O2 sensors is going to be two Not Ready issues. The tuner will have had to turn these test off in order to show no Not Ready state.

Mine is too loud to run straight pipes all the time, but more power to you. Measured it at peak around 125dB with 3" straight pipes. Sounds good though.

Anyway, all the stuff spelled out below. Also, you and use the Torque phone app and and a Bluetooth OBDII reader to see what your system will tell the inspector.

Just got mine inspected. The lady in the truck that failed hers at the same time was a bit pissed. LOL.

Effective October 15, 2008:

For vehicles year model 2001 and newer, we allow one (1) non-continuous monitor to be Not Ready and still pass the test, but two (2) or more Not Ready's will cause the vehicle to fail.

For vehicles year model 1996 – 2000, we allow two (2) non-continuous monitors to be Not Ready and still pass the test, but three (3) or more Not Ready's will cause the vehicle to fail.


There are three (3) continuous monitors that are always Ready: Misfire, Fuel System, and Comprehensive Components. If you look at your Vehicle Inspection Report (VIR), you will see the emissions monitors listed and their Ready/Not Ready status. If any of the non-continuous monitors say N/A (Not Available) or N/S (Not Supported), then there is no monitor for that system.

This information is illustrated in a "Ready or Not" poster displayed in all of the emissions testing stations as well as the Recognized Emissions Repair Facilities (RERF's).

If you're concerned about it and anywhere in the mid-cities region (around the airport; DFW, not DAL), I can connect my HPT cable and check codes and readiness. I'm in NRH and work around the 121/820 interchange.
