Need a New Rack and Pinion

Was just told by the dealership that I need to replace my rack and pinion on my gen v. Talked to Jon over at viper parts and he's stating it's impossible to get. Any suggestions? Should I rebuild it and/or can I rebuild it using parts from other cars?

    What were the symptoms?
So frustrating that Dodge stopped making parts for these cars, while they were still under warranty no less.
I've been waiting for over a year now to get a carbon diffuser replaced under warranty - part is on perpetual backorder. Got tired of waiting, did a wet layup and fixed the carbon fiber crack myself.

    wow, yeah this is concerning.

Trust me I know. I've been sourcing all the parts for them myself.

How does a relatively new car need a new rack and pinion? Was it damaged some how? That being said, there must be someone out there who can rebuild.

I was under the impression they needed parts to be available 10 years after the last model year. Is that not the case ?

There's no actual legal requirement, it's a myth.

I thought the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act was to ensure automotive companies had parts available during the warranty phase of the last year of production?

With Chrysler extended warranties how can they get away with not having parts? Surely there are Vipers under extended warranties.

Mine was still well within its original 3 year parts warranty and they still basically told me tough luck. For the carbon fiber diffuser piece that 2 strakes attach to. It had been sanded too thin on the top side to the point it cracked through.
Just a total lack of respect for their customers as far as I'm concerned. Even my nearly 20 year old italian cars still have the majority of parts available for purchase.

I am pretty certain that the act is limited to Model-Year minimums including "Limited Editions" and "Special Editions." I think the figure is 5000+ per MY.

If so, Viper never came close to that mark. Ironic that Lambo and Ferrari did!

I welcome more knowledgeable / updated corrections

Probably. It's been years but I oversaw three facilities that produced ductile iron suspension components and it was ten years for some. Those cars were sold by the tens of thousands and we had to keep molds for ten years from the last year of production. It was mostly suspension components and caliper brackets....etc No Chrysler products what so ever though. lol

If the Rack is the same as on a Gen 2 Viper, I believe the manufacture is TRW. TRW do rebuild steering racks and also do Re-con racks so I would reach out to them.

Did the dealership say why you needed a new rack? is it leaking or is there another issue?

Did the dealer indicate the fault in the existing steering rack? In my case, a common wear item is the inner rod, due to tracking and taking some shortcuts on the road course where the surface isn't conducive to suspension parts. You can purchase aftermarket inner rods, from various sources, like Doug Shelby Engineering.

Yeah this! What is wrong with it?

Maybe you can contact Wayne at xtreme supercars and see if they will send you the one that’s probably in the wrecked Gen 5 parts car in the shop that I just saw when I was there. Let me know if you need help bridging the gap.

I looked into this last year when sourcing a replacement for my 08, they aren't the same. The Gen2 has a round knurled coupling to the steering column. The Gen3+ is a square peg.

Sounds like the next thing I need to buy for the Viper is a CNC, lol.

A 3-D laser scanner, a CNC mill and an additive manufacturing center and you are golden!

Sorry for the delayed response. The only thing the dealership told me is that they found metal in the ps system. Nothing about any leaks. I ordered a new pump just in case a while back and the dealership ordered me a new rack. For the time being i had them flush the system and refill with new fluid. It seems to have remedied the problem for now. What do you guys think?
