Newbie Question

Hi all. I am seriously considering a 2013. I heard that some of the early 2013's have had some issues like the rear window breaking, windows not closing all the way, doors opening by themselves.

I believe their were upgrades for these issues later on in the model year. My question is. How would i know what's considered an "early" build and what's not? By the serial number? The DOM? Would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Yes, it's true...my rear window shattered. It was one of 6 cars that had this problem (out of 1000 cars) and it has been corrected. The problem has only been noted with early cars, but is still rare.

That said, having been through it, I wouldn't be afraid of early build cars. I would buy the configuration that you want. Very little changed through the 2013 production run (rear window defroster did change) and all of the "early build problems" are easily corrected under warranty.

I love my car and wouldn't discourage someone from an early build car.

That said, VIN is the easiest way to tell. There were several runs of serial production cars and they all have VINS under 100 (mine is #38 - but not necessarily the 38th Red SRT Launch - the VIN system is not perfectly sequential, except for the TAs). The serial production cars account for the first 300 cars (150 GTS B/W Launch cars, 50 Red GTS/Sepia Demo cars, and 100 SRT Red/Trackpack cars).

In short, if the VIN is over 100 and especially over 200 (for the last 3 digits), the car is not early build.

Is this something dealers can address prior to selling an early car?

The doors popping open were on 2014 models from what a recall.

Instead of losing 30% in a year I'd buy as second owner.

The only thing a dealer can do is if the problem comes up during the PDI of the car, they cannot just change things because they "could be" faulty unfortunately these are all handled on a case by case basis.
