    Radium Recirculating Catch Can Install

    Just wanted to throw up a few pics of my Radium Engineering catch can install. I searched all over the interwebz for the best engineered catch can that I could find. My criteria were to have it recirculated using the OEM PCV system so that I get all the benefits of evacuation of blow by and pulling contaminants out of the crankcase that would otherwise contaminate the oil as well as find one that had multiple stages of media or mechanical extraction and condensation of combustion byproducts and oil to prevent it from being recirculated into the intake as the OEM system does. There are a lot of good systems out there but I liked this one the best. I 'll follow up in a few months to see what the can has captured. I went with the competition version which is more expensive than their standard system but, hey, it's a viper ACR, and I'm competitive.

    Ron - looks good. Were you able to order everything from Radium or did you have to do anything yourself? What specs / options did you order?

    You can order everything from Radium. Actually, if you wanted to run open, you could as they sell a grommet and filter that attaches as well. This is the competition catch can, short version. They also make a standard one that is slightly smaller but just as nice that is about 1/2 the price. You spec the inlet and outlet fittings that you want. It took some research to figure out the optimal fitting sizes and arrangement, but I have it down if you have a Gen 4 car including the size of heater hose for attachment. I ended up putting blue earls fittings on mine because I spec'd the wrong size on one of the fittings I ordered from Radium so I just drove to the Earls Distribution center here in Indy and bought new ones....they didn't have black for one specific fitting and I didn't want to mix and match colors. Not to mention, the blue matches the car. If you decide to go with one that uses the same 7/8"-14 threads in the can, I have a couple extra 90deg swivels available for cheap that I won't use since they cost like $30-40 each!

    For Gen 4, you need -10AN barbed hose fitting inlet and outlet, 5/8" ID heater hose, and a couple zip ties to move the heater and overflow hoses out of the way. You could use smaller -AN fittings like -8 or -6 but then you would need reducers and adding additional connections that increase the chance of leaks. You'll need a tap and die set and a good drill/bit to drill 2 holes in the frame support. I ended up using 1/4" x 20 TPI allen head bolts and lock washers on the bracket. I threaded the holes rather than drilling all the way through the crossmember. My plumbing was a bit more complex just because I needed the hardline running to the Gen 5 intake but with a Gen 4, you could just run heater hose on both sides and be set as the attachment on the Gen 4 intake is 5/8".

    Nah, I wish. Apparently Jet Hot had a power outage for most of last week so they are behind. I was supposed to have them this week but it may be another week or so.

    The competition catch can is $350 plus fittings. The smaller version is around $160, I believe.

    Looks like a well-made piece. Maybe we should make a catch can thread that shows all the different options in one place since this topic seems to come up a lot, and there are a ton of options out there.

    They all will work on all generations, it's just a matter of plumbing, space available and deciding if you want a recirc or open style. If the Gen 2 cars are tight on space, Radium offers a less expensive can that is smaller and very highly engineered with a universal mounting bracket.

    I am looking to install a catch can too. On the GEN IV it looks so easy for doing the plumbing but I have an 06 Gen III. Is there someone who can enlighten me regarding the plumbing (what I need, where to connect, ...) or draw me a scheme? I used the search function but most topic for catch can are for the 08+ models.

    Roland, PM Flatout. He had a Gen 3 I believe and probably could help you out in that regard. I'm sure BBG or some of the other vendors have dealt in this area as well.

    Looks perfect. I'm curious as to how often you will need to empty the catch can.

    Seems like it would make sense for a catch can to be OEM.

    I was curious about this as well. I haven't had it on the track since the install, but I checked it after about 1000 miles of "spirited" driving, few roll races, etc and it had just enough oil in it to cover the bottom. I could have gone with a smaller unit honestly because it would take 50k miles at this rate to even fill the canister which looks to be about 500mL in size. OEM catch can would be wise, especially after pulling my intake off when doing the Gen 5 swap and seeing all the oil in the runners.

    Hi Ron, First thank you for posting and sharing the pictures. I know this is an old post but it still relevant for new ACR08 owner like me. I am looking at adding the catch can prior to my first track event and reading your setup, I did not see the Petcock Drain Kit. Do you need the drain option? I noticed that you have a 30 or 45 degree fittings connected to the 90 elbow going out, I am assuming this will be needed on G4 manifold as well? How often do you drain the media can (after Track)?

    I had a drain petcock on mine, but it sat too low in the engine bay to be able to get anything under it, so I had to take the catch can completely out when I emptied it anyway. Because of that, I removed the petcock and put a standard plug in instead. My catch can is a little longer though:



    Drain intervals with mine: for regular street driving and the occasional quarter mile pass, I drain it during my yearly oil change.

    If I tracked the car, I'd drain it after every track event. It is going to fill faster with heavy engine braking, and just heavy braking in general due to where the PCV valve is located on the Gen 4 (front of the passenger side valve cover).
