    JMB Intake Fitment Issues

    Hey guys,

I just received my air intake from JMB and it looks great but I'm having some fitment issues...

the filters won't clear the crossbar attached to the underside of the hood (I'm going to loosen the clamps and simply adjust), but more importantly, the hood won't close with the new metal induction cowl/intake box in place (even with the filters removed). I take it out, hood closes just fine. Put it back in, passenger side latch won't latch. I can't see any obstructions, so my only thought it that the cable is getting pinched. Any suggestions would be appreciated, I've never been more frustrated with a simple mod.

Did you get instructions with yours? I bought one some time ago and it just came as a box of unlabeled parts. I haven’t been motivated enough to play jigsaw puzzle with it yet.

I didn't see instructions, but it's possible i missed them. I assumed that if I paid attention taking the stock assembly off that I could easily put the aftermarket one on. For the most part it wasn't bad, until I tried to close the hood... Lol

I switched to a different cone filter that was smaller on the capped end. Mine were getting crushed as well. As many of these that I have heard have that same problem I don't know why they aren't supplied that way.

Regarding tbe latching I've also had to trim the box itself as it hits the hood. That prevents the hood from latching.

I did hear about switching filters, which is kinda of disappointing since they aren't exactly cheap. Where did you have to trim your box? Would it be possible for you to post a pic of your setup?

My setup looked just like everybody elses. The trimming did not show or change the look of the box. I think I may have documented where I trimmed the box. I'll look for that info.

In this pic with the smaller closed end filter you can see the mark left at the bottom of the box where the bigger closed end filter contacted it. The smaller one gives it room to move down instead of being smashed.

With the NACA duct out I could see it hitting at the front. That is with the hood popped.

With the edge trim pulled away here the was cut line for trimming.

Gotcha, these are super helpful, thank you! Did you stick with K&N filters or go generic?

    The filters are K&N.

I can only think of one thing that would fix the problem---refund. Something as poorly designed as this system doesn't deserve support. My 2c.

Unfortunately the JMB is the only air intake box on the market that offers the frontal grill area as an air intake point by extending the box nose and removing the radiator cover plate behind the fascia. There was another choice - the Vipair - but Steve no longer makes those. It worked in conjunction with the factory air box to draw air from the frontal grill as well. There is as well the K&N "cold air" intakes that draw air from the exact same location that the unmodified factory box does. I see no point in that kit.

Regarding the JMB, and in defense of their design, they tried to make it fit too snug and likely did not check the fit on enough cars. If there's one thing about the Gen 2 body that varies it's certainly all those parts up front.

You get what you get so don't pitch a fit. They have your money and you've got their shit. What you need is extruded u-channel molding with bulb seal on the short leg. Then, everything should seal nice and snug while allowing for some flexure in the hood and core support.

Finally got everything put together. Took some cutting of the air box, adjusting of the hood latch, and many f bombs. Local parts store didn't have any conical filters, so the cylindrical ones will have to work with some slight rubbing. The final product does look great and the intake noise at idle is fantastic. Not sure I would recommend it with all the frustration though.

I also had to modify my box assembly and change the filters. Pretty easy modification with a pair of aviation tin snips and a 90 degree sanding/ cut off wheel.

K&N P/N is RF-1039 - Summit has them. Pretty sure I got the info from Dave a few years ago.

Finally got my hands on a pair of RF-1039, same flange and base diameter as the ones supplied but a nice taper to 3.5 inch at the end cap - did the trick. Thanks again guys for the expertise.

I'm amazed you guys keep buying these things. They're junk and I'm sure not cheap. Support vendors that make good equipment. Or make your own. There's nothing special about these things from what I can see. Or maybe it's that pretty Sneaky Pete logo. My 2c.
