Lucky you! As opposed to the roadster, you can install a real sub in the trunk, like Dave. I had to go the route of constructing a footwell sub, sacrificing legroom for the passenger... the only way to achieve real low end in the roadster. IMHO..

Not going to happen, even in the hatch. You have to be able to move the air, so you either need more cone area (which you already have in spades with a 12" sub) or more excursion. You'd need 3-4 6.5" subs to get in the same ballpark as a single 12" in terms of cone area.

You might be able to get some back by going with a 10", but you are still probably going to lose some of that punch you are after. Even more so if you step down to an 8".

You can play some enclosure games, but that's going to require time, creativity, and the ability/willingness to fab a custom enclosure.

I'm assuming you are running your 12" in a sealed enclosure?

The single down-firing 10" sub in the back of mine is pretty decent, but the enclosure is around 0.9 cubic feet, so it takes up a lot of my usable space.

I see, missed that...well, I'd say it depends on the listening volume you are looking for. Smaller driver equals smaller enclosure (rule of thumb when the driver is suited for a closed box). Properly designed it will still provide good low end. But it will not deliver the SPL of your 12" JL, that's for sure.

My daughter got some takeout components from a guy she knew in HS and wanted them in her RX-8. I did some CAD modeling, mocked up in cardboard, then fabricated a 1CF steel (net) enclosure for a 12" RF Punch. I hadn't done a car stereo since about 1980, but it was very clean install. I filled the enclosure with sound batt and covered it with speaker carpet to match the trunk and it sounded very good with no resonance. Too bad I can't find pics of the final install, but I was damned proud of it!

BTW - my wife's Cayenne has a BOSE system in it with a sub under the space-saver spare tire. The enclosure is molded to fit the backspace hollow where the brake disc and hub would fit on the wheel. You might be able to do something like that - removing the anchor bolt and using a velcro strap to keep the spare snugged down above the enclosure if you want it in the car.

A 6.5 will never perform like a 12. Ever. But when I did mine I was willing to say goodbye to the trunk for daily use. I carry a tool bag back there with the SRT inflator and a set of jumper cables and flashlight, but have so far not even needed those. So, the hatch stays closed and beer and groceries go in the passenger seat.

I know the 6.5 is never going to give the same air movement. I was just hoping that these 6.5 might be powerful enough so that I can make some room in the trunk. But looking at the depth of the these subs it probably wouldn't fit in the stock speaker location anyway.

It would probably be possible with some light fabrication skills to integrate those subs in to the factory rear locations. But they might end up looking like...

Well, in the example I used, those aren't thumbs. I tried to church it up a bit. But we're on the same page me thinks. It would be performance over asthetics when the rear glass is open. But you'd have trunk space?

When I did my stereo makeover a few years back I abandoned the factory rear speaker locations entirely. Matter of fact, I abandoned the entire factory system entirely. Wiring and all.

For the rear bass I used a JL CP108LGW3v3 sub and an Alpine X-A90V amp. I bridged the other 4 channels for the door speakers.

It hits WAY harder than the factory amp and rears. I made a plate that lays in the trunk that holds it all. No modifications were needed to the trunk area whatsoever. Easily removable but since I never use the trunk I haven't ever removed it. And yes, since it is not anchored, if I ever am in an accident where the car tumbles end over end while rolling, it might fly out the rear glass area.
