    GEN III Mounts Question

Greetings! Noticed some "clunking" when shifting recently and some resistance to going in gear sometimes under load. Pretty sure I've got some degraded/broken trans/engine mounts. I checked out the woodhouse site but don't see anything for GEN III... same on Doug Shelby's site. I may just be behind the times. What's the most reliable source for GEN III mounts (both engine and trans) these days? Like to get this done this fall!

    Thanks in advance!

I believe Gen 1/2/3 are the same mounts. Still available thru the dealer and aftermarket. Polys are good.

I got the poly mounts. Very hard to install. I put them in when I was doing headers and still was tough.

Compared to the stock ones, they were much thicker. At one point I was lifting the car up by the oil pan and still had not enough clearance. I had a buddy w a big pry bar pushing the engine left and right to get them to clear.

Cutting a couple threads off the stud in the mount and removing the shock tower cross member so the engine can be lifted higher makes the install easier. I installed the left side only because it was ripped apart. Months later, when I had the pan off, I installed the right side.

I threaded the passenger side, then put a scissor jack between the frame and engine on the passenger side. Doing this pushed the driver side of the engine down so the mount lined up.

What would be the best way to test each mount ? Going on 10 years on the engine mounts and 16 years on the trans.

I don't know if there is a formal way to test an engine mount. However, you could open the hood and have someone lightly rev the motor and look for excessive engine movement, and if possible observe the mounts for deformation or separation.

The left one is the one that rips apart. To test just go wide open in 2nd and watch the shifter for movment.

Having gone through something similar myself on my Gen 4, here's what I'd recommend:

    - Try the trans mount first
    - Go waste all your money on hookers and blow
    - Jam toothpicks under your finger nails
    - Then try the engine mounts

The trans mount is relatively easy to access and replace.

The engine mounts, not so much.

I too thought my shifter moved a lot under heavy throttle - as it turned out, my motor mounts were completely fine. It only took a few days of intermittent wrenching, disconnecting the exhaust, removing the exhaust manifold, and a lot of cussing to replace the one on the driver's side. I took one look at how little access there was on the passenger side, and said "no thanks". And then I noticed that my exhaust tips were all jacked up, so I had to remove both side sills to realign those.

If you decide to do the motor mounts, you'd better be willing to commit. And I replaced mine with an OEM mount. Poly? Good luck.

    Hahahaha !
Thanks all for your replies. I’ll definitely try the trans mount first (just set myself up on that one) and go from there. I do have a slight exhaust leak when cold but not enough to jab tooth pics in my nails.

By the way, when I say shifter movement, I mean almost an inch, that was what mine did.

Thank you ! It does move when I push the car.
