    2008 transmission fluid

    Changing all the transmission fluid on my cars so figured I'd do the Viper as well. On a 2008:

    *Is the factory fluid this ATF+4 Mopar fluid:

    *How much -> 4 quarts?

    *Is it basically a side fill hole and pump it in until it starts peeing out of the fill hole?

    Yes, buy 4 quarts...and fill until fluid starts to drip out of the fill port.

    This is the fill procedure:



    Note the quantity - 3.4 qts. That amount is the "correct" fill level, but will NOT pour out of the fill port when full. If you fill it to the bottom of the port, it will result in a slight overfill of the transmission (~3.9 qts). This is not the end of the world, but if you run the car hard, it could end up in the transmission puking some excess fluid out of the vent. If you overfill it and that happens, that was why. Again, not a huge deal, but could make a bit of a mess.

    Thanks, Steve M..my bad for quoting the specified fill for a T-56 which is 4 quarts..though I never use quite that much.

    I've filled it to the bottom of the fill hole (that usually takes 3.8-3.9 qts), and also done the 3.4 qts and no more method...I guess I never drove mine hard enough to have oil puke out of the vent regardless of how I did it. And either way, you still have to buy 4 quarts to get the job done. I kinda feel like it is really splitting hairs, but probably important for people that engage in racing on high speed road courses. That is something I've never had the chance to do with mine.

    Would've been nice if they had just moved the fill hole down a bit.

    Word of caution do not overtighten the plug. Kind of goes without saying but with the thread sealant you don't need elbow torque.

    Agreed...I always use a PTFE based sealant as specified in the procedure above. The drain and fill plugs use pipe threads (tapered), and as such, the threads do the sealing. Some sort of sealant is REQUIRED on any pipe thread fitting to keep it from leaking.

    Speaking of drain plugs, I usually replace mine with magnetic ones in both the trans, dif and engine.

    While we are on the topic...For the TR-6060(Gen IV and V), BOTH the drain plug and the fill plug carry torque specs of
    20 ft-lbs.

    For the T-56 (Gen I, II, and III), the torque spec for the drain plug is 28 ft-lbs. and the fill plug spec is 20 ft-lbs.
