    Not Starting first try

Hey, weird question here could just be the nature of a huge v10. But I just recently started driving my 2016 Viper TA again after the long winter, I took it out about two weeks ago for a little drive and put it back in the garage. I decided to go out for a drive today, got in the car foot on clutch pressed the start button and the car like tried to start but than it puttered out and the started started clicking. I pushed the start button again without the clutch to shut all the accessories off. Put my foot on the clutch and pressed the start button, it fired right up. Not sure if you guys have experienced this before or not. Just curious thanks

I think that happened to my viper when it was stock once or twice after sitting for a while. Never persisted past that. Did you throw any error codes? Modified? Battery health?

Maybe it just took an extra second to get away from hibernation mode?

I didn’t put it in hibernation mode, it wouldn’t go into when I tried so I gave up lol

Probably a non-issue. Update us if it's a reoccurring problem.

I’ve had mine for 5 years now, but this past winter was the first winter the car spent a winter in a new area (moved states) there were two times I got the car out on a clear but cold day and this happened when I let it sit out. Both times though it started right up after the 2nd attempt to start. No error codes ever came up. But I did scare me too.....

The viper battery is tiny but a goodie. However, you have to keep it hooked up to a trickle charger during extended periods of storage. I remove my battery and keep it charging over the winter near the garage entrance into the house. That goes for any battery, but especially when you have a tiny battery starting an 8.4L 10 cylinder engine. Check you voltage with a multimeter. Even the way the car starts, you can tell it takes effort.

PS: I love the way the car starts haha

My Viper has done weird things coming out of Hibernation Mode (this winter), here a paste from another thread where I described:

These cars are quirky. Example, I always use Hibernation Mode, as cars sits for weeks at a time, AND use a tender. Have for the 5 1/2 years I've owned it. Fob battery replaced fall 2018. This past February, car had been sitting for 8 weeks. Get in as normal, and "fob not detected" when pushing start button. Third try, she fired up. Subsequent restarts (2) were fine. Replaced battery in fob. Next day, all good. That was the last time I drove it until yesterday - 9 weeks. Get in, "fob not detected". Third try, after pushing a couple buttons on the fob, she lit right off. Subsequetn restarts, all fine.

Viper battery good, tender always green, and she reads 14.5 volts during operation. So, I think it has something to do with coming out of hibernation mode after a long time. But don't know why only starting now

I wonder if it might be a condensation issue where your short drive the first outing might have been just long/short enough for some moisture to build but not burn off and then condense overnight.

need to keep these cars on a trickle charger. When a battery goes dead they can be brought back but they will be weaker

Yes, a must. As I said, I use a Battery Tender AND always use Hibernation Mode as well. I'll see tomorrow morning if I get the "fob not detected" first couple tries. I'll report back!!

Mine just did the same on my first start, it was not a battery issue, it seemed like the start button was dead.

Been in hibernation mode, and tender, for a week. First two tries - "key not detected". Third try, she lights right off. Two stops this morning, each about 5-10 minutes, and restarts perfect.

So, it must be something to do with coming out of Hibernation Mode. But why now, after 5 1/2 years of which I've been doing this. Modern car electronics are weird...!

Seems we had that happen few months ago. Although ours wasn't on tender, it was in hibernation mode for few weeks prior. Got in it, and "key not detected"
I put the key up next to the start button and it started, no problem since...we'll see.

If one has this problem following hibernation mode ( a.k.a. sleep mode or battery saver mode), why not just skip using hibernation mode when a battery tender is available?

Admittedly, I do not use hibernation mode on our Gen V for the reason stated. I do use it on a Gen III that is stored in a spot that has no electricity..but, that is a very different system compared to a Gen V.

I just like the redundancy I guess. Also, it's only a guess that it has something to do with Hibernation Mode - it may have nothing at all to do with it. A mystery....

Have you actually replaced the battery with a brand new one? If not, it just sounds like the battery is not holding much of a charge.

Deltran is your friend. Hook up whenever not in use.

Once you have drained a non-deep cycle battery to the point that it will no longer start your car, you've greatly reduced its remaining available life. You also end up taxing the alternator since it now has to do a lot more charging than it was ever intended to do.

First things first, replace the battery. Second, if leaving it for more than a couple of weeks without starting, either put it in hibernation mode, or hook it up to a battery tender of some sort. There are a million different brands out there that all do basically the same thing.

You might also take note of where you are storing your key fob in relation to the car. The communication between the two is an active process that draws power.

Yeah battery is dead/old/expired... Mine did that and a new battery got it running again with no issues.
