Heads Up Check your ACR rear wing Support plates

Hi Everyone,

Thought I would post up these pics of my ACR rear wing support plates. Car has only done 13k miles and am surprised to see the metal on these plates starting to corrode it seems. I'm noticing this
on both support plates. Anyone else notice this?

I didn’t think there was any metal involved in the wing supports, thought it was all carbon except the fasteners

Wow, never seen that before. Does kind of look like rust trying to pop through paint but then I didn't think those parts were made of steel either. Keep us posted on what you find. Will you strip them and see what is going on?

Yep. Thinking the same thing. Nothing to rust.

Yeah not sure at this point really whether its rust or poor paint prep, however the support plates are steel guys, as are the Stanchions.

Sadly even Magnesium corrodes.

I presume from the Photos we are looking at the Top underside of the rear wing? Not knowing the material used for the nutserts and the bracket itself, it might be a case of water creeping around the wing on the underside recess and possibly causing Galvanic corrosion.

Could be worse, mate of mine has a low milage MP412C with a rusting front wing!

Just a thought, but if the rear wing unbolts, it might be worth coating the top of the support brackets with clear silicone then remount the wing and tighten. Clean off any excess silicone that squeezes out, hopefully the silicone would stop moisture penetration along that recessed seam?

It would be interesting to see what the top of the bracket looks like with the carbon wing removed?

I would guess Fatboy is on target. If I’m not mistaken I recall Herb Helbig talking about the electrical (galvanic) properties of carbon.

Problem is the wing seems to be riveted to the support plate so need to find out best way to remove it.
Might be a thought going down Waynes Xtreme Supercars CF replacement. Would certainly be lighter however just not sure the CF would be ideal for the potential 1 ton Downforce acting on that rear wing

Yup same issue . I think is its what they call white rust . Its under the paint like an oxidation from the aluminum . Basically moister penetration that calcifies but I am guessing like what Fatboy said

Not a big issue but if it starts flaking then it will look like shit . Probably on a lot more of our cars but no one looks under the wig at the upper part of the supports

This reminds me a lot of the Gen II side sill debacle. Just about every one of them corroded due to a galvanic reaction, and had to be replaced. Back then, parts were readily available. Now, not so much. If you're in the UK, so you have any warranty support? If you bought through a US dealer, do you think you can remove them and ship them back? There's definitely a "rust warranty" on these cars, so take advantage of it if you can.

If you can't, then probably the best thing to do is to take it to a body shop, have it ground down and re-sprayed. Complete pain in the ass, but might be unavoidable. If you leave it, moisture will keep wicking under the paint, causing more corrosion, and pretty much the whole underside will be bubbled up.

Anyone know how those rivets/fasteners come off? Don't want to drill through into the CF but maybe thats the only way. No Warranty over here in Europe...

They drill out
the stands are aluminum, i am going to assume there is probably some movement between the wing and mount causing the paint to wear through. Then moisture causes the aluminum to corrode.

It seems they have the production knowledge and experience, and the parts appear to be high quality. If they could just manage the business, it would seem they could have a winner on their hands. While I appreciate that the Viper market is small, there's no reason why they could not supply other supercar makes where the market can be very lucrative it seems.

Go through Doug Shelby or Jon B and that seems to get parts from Xtreme a lot faster. I just got some carbon fiber end plates through Doug and they shipped like next day...

Scott, send me an email address, I have a price list from Xtreme for 2018, it'll at least give you a rough estimate. I was trying to get end plates for a year and was quoted $400, but since it was a year later it ended up being $500. The price had gone up, not a big deal

Wayne and Laurel have been great for the Viper community. True, the aviation sector is their priority and should be, that's their bread and butter. We should consider ourselves lucky to have a quality manufacturer opening up their shop, even for a short window each year. I just have bad timing, I keep forgetting and missing the window.

1 Tom of downforce? Sorry but that does t seem realistic. MY whole Corvette Daytona Prototype has a full ton of downforce & it has downforce generators inside the door sills. I’d guess the actual # for the stock ACR rear wing is closer to 400-500#. More depending on how crazy you get w it.
