    Replacing A C Compressor

In process of buying my first Viper, 2013 GTS. Had Dodge do a PPI they identified the a/c compressor needs replacement. Is that job something I would need a Viper tech to do or any dealership would be fine? I don't have any Viper techs near me that I know of but the car was inspected by one where it is for sale. I'm in NJ closer to Philly of anyone can recommend a dealer with a tech nearby.

    It shouldn't be rocket science.

While I'm sure they looked at this I would check and make sure the line going into the compressor isn't leaking and causing the compressor not to work due to low refrigerant. I had to replace this part on my car as well as a friends. It's extremely easy to do and the line was only ~$60 if memory serves.

Remember, we're talking a Dodge dealer here, with a (at this time especially) distracted tech, who may not know Vipers. Could be pricey, maybe pass on that car, or have the dealer knock the price down to cover the repair?

I agree 100% and that is a reason I do all my own work.

Another thing to think about depending on who the compressor failed you might also need to replace other parts like the expansion valve, condenser, and drier (basically everything but the lines which also need to be cleaned out).

They said the compressor was leaking. Inspection was done by viper tech at Ketter Dodge in Charlotte, NC, who I found using the dealer friendly list sticky on this forum. Would a leaking compressor necessitate replacing all those components? Dealer said 1735 to replace. Seller has offered 1k reduced price. I think I'm alright splitting the cost but not if this is an indication of a much more extensive repair.

Has it had the recall for the engine?

Yes it's an R28 car, engine was replaced in 2017 at 13k miles. Still carries powertrain warranty until mid 2023.

If the compressor is leaking it makes me think even more that it's the same issue I ran into. Have them send you a picture of where it's leaking. If it's at the top where the return/suction line hooks up it's likely the hose that's causing the problem and not the compressor.
