    2001 starting problem

    2001 GTS 7900 miles 100% stock
Over the last few outings I've had a starting problem. I turn the key and the engine turns over fine but wont start. I turn ignition off and attempt a restart and it starts normally. Today it started normally when cold. I went to the drug store and when I went to start to come home it did it again It took 3 trys to get a start. I now have the CEL on. I don't have an OBD-II reader. I have one on order and should be here next week. When I try to start I have the clutch pedal depressed and my right foot on the brake so the throttle is at idle.

    Is this a common problem?

I believe all Chrysler products of that era indicate what DTCs are set by flashing the CEL in a count pattern. You get to this mode by turning the ignition on (but not starting), then off 3 times. The third time, leave it on, the CEL will start flashing in groups the DTCs.

The later vehicles, with a digital odometer, just display the DTCs there.

What he said...watch the CEL...count the flashes which will come in pairs...3 flashes, pause, then 2 flashes would be Code 32 and so on. When out of codes, it will flash 5,pause, then 5 times...code 55 meaning session over.

My Gen 2 does not do that. As a later model Gen 2 I assume none of them do. Pretty sure that came about in 2003 with the Gen 3.

Dude. Auto zone will read the code for free. Code readers are less than $20 and available most anywhere. And you do realize that pulling one of eleventy billion possible causes out of our @$$es gets much easier if... you would do that first lol

The auto parts places around here are honoring the Michigan lockdown and won't read the codes. As I said I've got a reader on order. Mine died last year. A friend has one that I'll be picking up sometime today. I was hoping an expert here would have seen this problem before and might say ...Oh yeah. thats usually the fuel pressure sensor or something along those lines. It was worth a try.

Try turning the key into the on position so you hear the fuel pump turn on, then turn the key off. Then try to start. Kind of like priming the system. My old car did this once in a while, intermittently. I changed the fuel filter and it went away, not sure it was the problem of just coincidence.

I just red the OBD codes and found a P1389 which points to the ASD relay as a possible problem. I'm looking for info on where that relay is located.

Fuse box under the hood, drivers side. Pull another relay that isn’t needed to run and swap and see if the issue goes away.

That was the plan. This morning I cleared the P1389 code. I checked the battery voltage at the power distribution panel. Ignition off = 12.28V, ignition on = 12.03V, Ignition on and lights on = 11.58V. I swapped the ASD relay with the fog lamps relay. The car started on the first try and the CEL remained off. I'm hopeful that the problem is gone. I need to drive it a few times to feel confident that the problem is solved.
