    Question Gen II Exhaust Upgrade

    Hello all!

Back in November of last year, my supercharged creampuff engine ate three of my pistons up and has been in a shop for upgraded parts since then. Currently, the exhaust manifold is stock with a 3" high-flow Corsa exhaust set installed. To avoid another piston failure, I've opted to upgrade to forged pistons, rods, etc (all 10) and possibly up-size the manifolds to 3" to alleviate excessive back-pressure.

My concern is that having the entire exhaust system at 3" will be significantly louder. Does anyone currently have 3" exhaust manifolds and Corsa system installed through-and-through? If so, how loud is it at idle? Since I live in the Greater Bay Area in California, local police and certain people tend to complain...

I have 3" Corsa with Belanger headers and cats. The Corsa system doesn't really have mufflers, just a couple of resonators to reduce specific frequencies. It is way too loud for my taste. I find it uncomfortable to drive without ear plugs. I'm going to replace it at some point.

I installed the 3 inch Corsa cat back with Belanger hi-flo cats . Stock exhaust manifolds. It is definitely louder than stock for sure, but I do not find it to be uncomfortable in the car at all. It has two resonators in the side sills and two mufflers/resonators in the rear where the exhaust exits. I wish it were slightly less loud, but not a lot less. Adding headers would, I imagine, add to decibel level. I evaluated this system and Belanger's cat back - which also sounds very good. Went with Corsa as I preferred the crackly exhaust note versus deeper notes. All preference. Much better than the stock drone, I can tell you. Good luck.

3" exhaust manifolds are impossible on a viper. The ports on the heads aren't anywhere near that big. Too lazy to look it up but Belangers are like 1-7/8" headers. My car has them with no cats and only a very small resonator with side exit. Not that loud at all.

Yeah, what I like about the Corsa on my Viper is the pop and crackles it makes on the downshift. I just love the note.

I may have misheard my tech or misremembered. All I know is that upsizing them is in the talks. I just want to make sure I don't over-pressurize the cylinders to prevent more problems down the road. Need to find out the current tune and boost when they put her back together to make sure she's in the sweet spot on reliability but in power as well...

    Wait, what?
The Corsa is (almost...) dead silent inside with the windows up at cruise speed. Unlike many other exhaust system.
And when you floor it, ofcrouse, all hell breaks loose. Release the demon and the extreme noise that comes with it.

I love my Corsa exhaust, I wouldn't recommend anything else to anyone.

I have full Belanger exhaust. It was embarrassingly loud at any RPM. I installed a set of Dynomax race mufflers in the side sills and they were just what the doctor ordered. Nice deep note at idle and sounds great when you hit the volume pedal.

I don't know what headers are on my car (probably stock), but I have high flow cats and a B&B exhaust on my '99 - it is painfully loud to me once it gets above 2k RPM. I'm also in the SJ area so we can meet up sometime.

Not sure about the particulars of your car, but it sounds like you had a tune issue. As far as sound is concerned, does the car have CATS, and are they in good shape? I’d spend the money on the best CATS money can buy, the rest of your exhaust should be good to go, unless some hack job was performed. Next question is why has the car been in the shop since November.......

CATs will be checked up upon and hopefully are still in good shape. I believe they were part of the previous owner's upgrade to the 3" CORSA, parts # 14119.

As for the time, told the tech to take their time as I don't have covered parking and didn't like the idea of the GTS being drenched in condensation under a car cover during the wet season. Plus, didn't like the idea of having to hike several blocks in the rain to my daily driver. As for parts, the forged pistons I wanted weren't readily available but finally got the set ordered with, I believe, Exotic Engine. And California Bay Area drivers aren't the best in the rain. Prefer to have the Viper in one piece after a drive.
