Haha, I have no idea. Technically, ἀσπίς (aspis) is the Greek or Latin word, it's usually just 'asp' in English, like:

“The venom of asps is under their lips.” -Romans 3:13

"They cruel poison of asps shall slay them..." -John Bunyan's commentaries, 1769

Also, this way, it forms a deliberate pun with this meme, as I think most people here knew:
