You can t winter drive these things

So I'm usually the guy that says "If you put proper tires on it you can winter drive anything!" which I still hold to be true from a traction standpoint.

That said, I was under the car the other day admiring the, um, underside of the car and noticed this 1/4" gap on some panel below the flywheel. Ya probably don't want salt, chemicals and sand getting in there! Is it normal to have this big of gap?

I wasn't planning on going skiing with it anyway but still. Not used to seeing that kind of vulnerability on other cars I've had.

I like the ACR even more because of this BTW. Totally no fucks given by Dodge!

OK...back to the garage to admire the underside of the car...happy Sunday!

Why would anyone consider driving one of these in the winter even if winter tires made a difference who cares

The gap is there so when your rear main seal leaks, it can leak out freely. There's nothing wrong with the gap.....nothing will get in there.

Define "winter driving". Two weeks ago here in New York it was almost 60 with dry salt free roads. Also January.
There's no reason you can't get out and enjoy that in a Viper or any other car.

I've been driving all winter on Toyo R888r tires. No problem. Not driving through snow, but it's been a pretty mild winter here on Cape Cod. No reason not to drive if the roads are clear and dry. The rain has washed all the crap off the roads. Going for a drive in a few minutes. 43 degrees. Probably do 100 miles or more.

Nice, and I agree. Too bad all the mild, salt-free days always come during the week when I'm at work!

I mean I drive it in the winter on dry roads. Kumhos have surprising grip in the cold. My point was to illustrate just how single-focused the design and engineering of the car is.

So I should put the drip pans on the lift then eh? ;-)

Yep...do it all the time. I was thinking more along the lines of putting some winter tires on it and going at the slushy stuff! You can tell that wasn't part of the design brief. Which makes sense obviously.

That car is obviously ruined ;-) I once had to de-ice the wing on the ACR!

We have about 7 days of it scattered over 8 weeks. You know, when you have to run your defroster for 5 minutes to clear your windshield but it's 50 degrees by noon........Don't miss real winter at all.

Nothing but warm sunny days for my car even if it was the most capable winter car I still would not drive it in the winter

I don't let the calendar determine if I'm going to go take an enjoyable ride, I let the actual road conditions.

A piece of Duct Tape should seal that off for you, problem solved.

SharpMan, I winterized my Gen V way before anyone else. Met with the SRT engineers and one-uped them on their design. We made some videos about it as well. The wheels and tire package is for sale in the classifieds. They have less than 500 miles on them and cosmetically are brand new...in case anyone is interested in driving a Viper in the winter (cold and/or snow) the safe way.
