    Gen V Rear Gears

I am trying to recall if there is difference in gearing between the 2013-2014 models and 2015-2017 models. Did all the Gen V's have the 3:55 rear gear and a switch within the trans ratios or was there a rear gear difference between 2014 & 2015?

The diff ratio's are all the same. Some later models had a modified 6th gear. You can also change 5th gear independly.

NO DIFF in the DIFF GEARS within all of G5

[3:21 is the option for mile events...].

It was a revised 6th gear ratio on the 15-17 GT GTS cars; I'm unsure about the TA and ACR. I'd like to put the 13-14 6th in my 15 at some point.

I have had both, it is a mixed bag. For highway travel, when you are over 70 mph, the higher numerical ratio is better, under 70 the lower ratio is best. You can change either 5th/6th or both, they are independent unlike 1-4.

My 14 GTS has the higher numerical 6th gear while my former 2015 TA 2.0 had the .50 as does my ACR (yes, my 2015 TA 2.0 had the .50 6th gear, it may have been the only one so equipped from the factory as all the TAs were supposed to have the .63 even after they changed the non-TA 2015 Vipers to .50.) I have always preferred the .50 6th gear to the .63. The higher numerical gear results in higher RPMs when cruising on the highway. Out west speed limits are generally higher (75 or even 80) and the higher revs get tiring when you are driving the long distances that Western States (think Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, New Mexico, Nebraska, Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota, Idaho, Arizona, and others) require to get anywhere. Ok, maybe a downshift is necessary to pass but to me that is just fine, I like shifting. I suppose in the more congested eastern states with lower speed limits the .63 might be great though.

I think going to the 3.55 rear and the .63 6th gear in the 2013 Gen 5 was too much of a change from the Gen 3/4's 3.07 rear end and .50 6th. I think that is why they went back to the .50 in 2015. While people didn't necessarily like the Gen 4 combo as revs were too lazy in 6th the original Gen 5 combo went too far IMO at least for street driving. Truth is unless you are doing a high speed shootout of some kind no one uses 6th gear on the track. I can't think of a track that I've been to that would require shifting to 6th and I've been to over 50 tracks across the country. Maybe Daytona, but I really don't remember using 6th even there.

Viper George. I drive 1200 miles on the I-15 between residences and other than through the odd urban area or high mountain pass, it’s 85-90 MPH all the way. I really wish my car came with the “wrong” 6 th gear like yours. It’d be quieter and I wouldn’t have to stop for gas as often! I totally agree with you; I’ve never grabbed 6th on a track so having it shorter for better acceleration is irrelevant to me. I might feel differently if I competed in top speed events.

Yea, I kind of special ordered the .50 6th in my TA 2.0. I was surprised they did it but they did. Traded that car on an ACR though so I no longer have it. It was a great car though - Competition Blue #4. I see the guy that owns it sometimes in Nebraska at the Viper Rendezvous. He comes by to spectate and brings the car.

My '13 GTS had the .63 6th and I found it revved too high when on the highway.
My '16 GTC TA2 has the .50 6th and I found it revved too low, so I changed the rear gears from 3.55 to 3.91 and now 6th acts like it's a .55 (10% increase), wich is perfect for me.
It also moved the droning zone away from highway driving and fisrt to fifth gears are now also shorter and more fun to use !

That is A nice solution accept for drag racing, it probably is hitting the limiter in 4th.

Im seriously jealous of this. If I had the .50 6th gear I would have changed rear gears long ago. I just havent sucked it up enough to also make the change in the transmission too. With your setup I think I could spend 95% of my track time in 3rd and 4th for the tracks Ive been on. Id gladly do that and avoid needing 2nd even if my times stayed similar.

Yes, I felt the same way with the '13 GTS and .63, so when I got the nearly new '16 with .50 I ordered the 3.91 gears from JonB and got them changed even before taking possession of the car.
Perfect for street use and on my local Tremblant track, there is only one spot where I now hit the rev limiter in third (for Bruce H, that's just before getting to Namrow).
For Drag racing Jack B is right about 4th gear, but I usually go to the drags with the 911 Turbo S anyway as it does hit mid-tens all stock, no burnout !

if anyone wants to change the trans ratio and wants minimum down time, I have a spare trans that can be had. It was only in the car four months approx.

Agree on my 14GTS. The .63 with the 3.55 gear revs pretty high. I'm used to the .50 and 3.07 rear where I'd turn 1500rpm @ 80mph. I'd avg right at 25mpg or on par with my Lexus LS460L...both better than the 17mpg I get in the Ram1500.

Maybe I'll try and swap in my 3.07 diff and see how I like it.

The first three gears would suck, it would not work. The cars with the 3.07 gears also had a 26" tire and a 2.66 first gear, not 27" tires and 2.26 first.

For stock power levels I agree. But for boosted, not a problem.

If the car was cammed, first gear would shake you to death.

My 14SRT gets 20mpg in 6th(HPtune/Belangers). It's amazing the torque it still has at low rpm to pass. I've only been in 6th 2 or 3 times over 5 1/2 yrs..
