    GEN I Brake Help

New Viper owner picked up a 1994 GEN I in St. Louis. On the way back to CA, one of the rear brake pads came apart ... now it is metal on metal. He got my name as he is stuck in Amarillo.

I have lots of GEN I parts but no rear pads. He has ordered a set of pads from a local parts store, hopefully they will arrive soon.

Question: Does anyone know of another application for those rear Viper pads??? Hopefully another make/model which sells lots of cars will help. Just in case the ordered pads do not show ...

    Thankx!!!

And just in case you aren't familiar with rockauto, in the link that Mark posted are various front and rear pads, and if you click on the part number's hyperlink, it shows what Rockauto considers applicable car models that use them. Nothing very common.

    Here is another Advert
with cross reference Pad numbers Its even showing a Honda NSX! I never Knew that!
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KRAFT-REA....c100005.m1851

Some of these pads have a pin in the outer holes with a spring clip attached, you don't need that part on a Viper so just remove pin and spring clip with a pair of Grips and you are good to go

Are gen 1 and gen 2 brakes the same? I just changed the rotors and pads on my gen 2 and have the pads still sitting around. Still decent life in them.

Skidmark, the rear pads on Gen II ABS Vipers (2001 and 2002) differ from the earlier Vipers (1992 through 2000)

Good Point Steve, The Thread did say "Gen 1 Brake help" But as you say its worth mentioning late Gen II Vipers 2001 - 2002 with ABS differ.

Can't believe you did not inspect something as basic as brakes before buying. Lesson learned.

I would recommend all buyers to check 2 things first and foremost before buying any vehicle that is going to be driven off, especially long distances. One is the age (4-digit code on tire) and tread depth (measured in 32nds) If the tire is 8 years or older and/or the tread depth is 2/32 or lesser, please consider that drive back to be a high risk (50-50 chance of making it) drive. Old tires in cold weather are a recipe for disaster. There are a lot of fall and winter accident stories on the forums. Second is brakes. Wheels need to come off or no deal! If the brake pads have less than a couple of mm, time's up. Factor that in and drive to the nearest brake shop first.

In this particular case, obviously the previous owner didn't do much maintenance so I hope you don't find further issues. Good luck with your ride.

AviP: First it was not may car, but a guy who bought one and was traveling home with it.

From his description, it sounds as if the brake pad bonding material gave way and left him with a metal to metal issue.

Happened as he was traveling through Amarillo .

Luckily, O'Reilly's got him a set of pads the next day ...
